Hilarious Quote from Nintendo Exec

No one will deny that Sony is a world-class hardware company, and no one would deny that Microsoft is a world-class software company. Nintendo aspires to be neither one of those things.
Peter Main, a Nintendo marketing executive, to the San Francisco Chronicle

Yeah, it was a stupid comment. But one of the dumbest moments in business? This is a marketing exec we're talking about here.

Peter's not with Nintendo anymore is he? I think he switched sides and joined the evi--- uh, Microsoft's XBOX division. Or was that Peter Moore? I get confused on those two...

Yeah, they strive to be a world class game company, which by the way they are.

But I do agree a Marketing guy of all people could choose better words.

One would postulate that to be the worlds best Gaming Company you would by default have to also be both the best Hardware company and the best Software company.

Atleast the best out of all those who deal with games as well. (Sony, Microsoft)

Hardware covers a lot more than just video game consoles and accessories. Software covers a lot more than just video games.

yes, but his comment wasn't that they wanted to be the best, it was that Sony and MS were world class and nintendo didn't want to be.

No, it wasn't. But Kellehair, why are you bothering to defend this comment? It was obviously a boneheaded remark.

Right, it was obvious what the exec meant, but he choose terrible words to express it.

Sort of related:

At least Nintendo named the Gamecube "Dolphin" during development, and not "Pearl Harbor".....

I know that most of you know what I'm talking about, so I'll leave it there.

I don't understand why everybody doesn't find this poor choice of words amusing.

By the way, it was Ken Lobb that switched to MS.

I find it amusing. It was a bad way to word what he was saying. Does anyone have the full interview? Sometimes they cut out parts that make the qoute make a lot more sense.

I thought it was very funny and forwarded it to a few friends.

Just be glad this hasn't turned into a "It's funny cause it's true -- Nintendo's hardware and software really isn't world class" console-bash.

An even better one....

"If video games truly had that large an affect on people those kids who grew up playing pac man would be standing around in dark rooms, eating magical pills, and dancing around to repetitive electronic music,"-Nintendo executive 1989
