A quick note:

Some people are now saying it's before their time, so they haven't seen enough to vote... If you've seen even one film that you really liked from the year, and thus you consider it the best you've seen (even if it's the only one you've seen), go ahead and vote. Heck, I was born in '82, so yeah, it's before my time too, but I've still got a favorite from most years back at least through the 70s, even if I've just seen 2 or 3 from the year.

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1970 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1970 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

Five Easy Pieces - i think?!

Fellini Satyricon was made and released 1969. US had to wait until 1970.

This was so not a stellar year. As much of an Altman fan as I am, I think MASH is overrated. Brewster McCloud is as good but neither is Best Picture material. Little Big Man pales so much in comparison to the book that I just can't vote for it. That goes even more so for Catch-22.

There's nothing else that's very exciting so my vote goes to Patton by default. It's a very good movie but I would not pick it as Best Picture in almost any other year.

I guess I should be glad that I never read the book!

You'd be in for a real treat. It is a great book.

I read the book before I saw the movie. I think if you read the book after, it is usually not as harmful, retroactively, to your enjoyment of a movie which is good but doesn't quite do justice to the book.

End of August at the earliest... by then I'll have seen Lord of the Rings and In The Bedroom, the two I'm most blatantly missing from my 2001 list ;)

And oh yeah, bump!

Patton wins it hands down, but the other votes were very spread out. I'm a little suprised that as we go farther back, the votes are still very much spread out (more so than through a lot of the 80s).

1) Patton (16 votes)
2) Five Easy Pieces / M*A*S*H (4 each)
4) Il Conformista / Little Big Man (3 each)

8 more films got 1 or 2 votes each.

This one's ready to close...
