New York City - Best Dvd Store/outlet?
I am from england and going to manhattan soon for a vacation in a few months. As I have a multi-region player i am just wondering where is best place - price wise- to go in the city for dvd's?
Any suggestions and locations would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Blowout Video on Broadway Between 44th and 45th street.
In Greenwich Village look up Discorama West 4th street near Sheridan Squre
J+R Lower Manhattan Park Row near City Hall Park. Found some great deals in here in the past.

I highly recommend J&R, I go there often. The Criterions here are often high price but below MSRP. Usually new release Criterions are $19.99 or $25.99 for the lower priced ones. Expect to pay $29.99 for the higher priced ones (2-disc sets). Although Hearts and Minds which recently came out was $37.99. The only other store in NYC which has the same amount of Criterions is Virgin Megastore of which there are two locations, Times Square and Union Square. The prices there are all MSRP however. VMS does carry some Criterions that you can't find at J&R though. Another store which I recently found out about is DVD Palace on 46th and 7th. They sell dvd's before street date, this is how I got The Royal Tenenbaums two weeks early although for a premium. I hope this helps you out.

The "DVD GUY", he's usually a couple of blocks down from J&R, going towards the Ferry! He has great deals if you can catch him when he's on the street!

J & R has one of the best selections you will find in NY and will also find some great sales at times. Also Best Buy is another good one. I would stay away from Blowout Video there prices are not the great.

There's also Bondy's, one block up from J&R on Park Row. They have a small selection but they always street early. Note: most of their dvds are R1 Canadian imports.
Also here's the thread on the DVD Guy on Broadway:

Have fun in NYC.

I disagree
I disagree with the notion that you can find cheap DVDs in NYC. (With the exception of J&R which I simply don't know about) the places listed above are fun places to shop...true. They have good large selections...true.
But you will not find prices cheaper than online. Even when a store like Virgin has a 20% off sale on Criterion, you'll still find cheaper prices on line.
It's fun to brown for disks in the city but buying them in the store doesn't save you money!
Instead, I suggest you limit your dvd shopping and take in a Broadway play. Go to the TKTS booth on 47th St and get half price tix.

Well...I wouldn't say THAT is totally true either. It's just that you're not going to find any NYC-based deals on dvd's.
Best Buy/CC/Wiz are still your best bets for cheap dvd's in NYC. Other than that...it's a needle in a gaystack trying to find the cheap deals. Occasionally they can be had but very rarely at one specific place.
I don't think I've ever gotten a DVD from Virgin. WAYYYYYYYY too expensive. Blowout used to have good deals but not any more. Entertainment Outlet and DVD Palace break street date. Never been to J&R since i'm never that far south.
Disc-o-rama is hit or miss. A friend got a lot of porn there tho. And they have a trade in service with cd's that you could put towards dvd's.

Being from a tax-free state, I limited myself to buying DVDs not available on Best Buy or Border's (Clean, Shaven and Panda Ko-Panda for example) when I was at J&R. When you add on sales tax (not paid on internet purchases or any purchase in Delaware) it adds up.
Still a fun experience to go through and look at all the stuff they have.

Also miss seeing what great deals the "DVD GUY" has!!! Haven't been able to find a store out here that even comes close to the selection of J&R!!

I have to second the recommendation for Discorama on west 4th, or their other store right on Union Square (east side).
Most things run $17.99, some 19.99, and if you buy 3 movies, the 4th is 50% off!! I just picked up the OZ box set for $29.99 -- unbelievable!

Pricewise not so good, but if you're looking for the weird, the bizarre, the cult films, check out Mondo Kim's on St. Mark's Place (East 8th St beween 2nd and 3rd Aves) in the East Village.
