You will not believe what my local Hastings is doing!
I tried to rent Royal Tenenbaums last night, and when I left the store I noticed that I had only one of the two discs. I returned and long story short, the previous renter had left the supplements disc in his dvd player. They called him and the guy did bring it back right then, so everything worked out.
In the meantime, though, I thought I was going to have to find another disc to rent, so I looked at A Beautiful Mind and noticed that only one of the two discs (it's a two-disc set also) was on the shelf. I asked about it and found out that my local Hastings has a new policy that from now on, they will only rent the movie disc on two-disc sets. They put the other disc in storage. Apparently, they've had problems with not receiving both discs back on tw-disc sets, so they've decided to only include the movie disc for rentals. The whole attitude of the associates was "You're not missing anything. It's just a bunch of 'promotional stuff.'" One of the associates even said that to me as I waited for the second disc for the Tenenbaums.
I told the manager that if his store were going to only rent half the movie, it should charge half the price. He laughed. I said, "You laugh, but I'm not joking."
This is a crock! I guess I'll have to rent elsewhere from now on, which sucks because the rental selection in my town leaves a lot to be desired.
Oh and please don't tell me that I should just buy the discs because I watch a lot of movies and can't afford to shell out the money to purchase them all. If you have the expendable income to buy every movie you want to see, that's great, but some of us still rely on rentals.

that really sucks. the hastings here just puts both discs in one of the little cases that is designed for just one so there is always an extra disc floating around getting scratched. i made a big deal of it to my brother and he told me to quit being so anal. oh well, i guess i just take this stuff seriously.

Why is it that rental stores are the b@stard childern of the business industry?
I mean Blockbuster is all together messed up
Seems Hastings has started to adopt some pretty far out there ideas.
My local renting option feels that some DVD covers are too explicit and they can make better ones. I'm not at all offended by the cover of Stigmata
.
but a plain white piece of paper with the title scribbled across it really gets to me
That second disc idea Hastings has is crap. I wish you luck going some other place.

That is really awful. I hated that Netflix made two disc sets separate rentals, even for movies spread on two discs...one of the reasons I stopped doing the Netflix thing. But to just throw the second disc into storage and not allow it to be rented at all is lame.
Beware if you're thinking of Netflix, though, that to get the "promotional crap" supplements disc, you have to rent it separately.

Which is why it's stupid to make 2-disc sets instead of DVD-18s!
