Anyone else having Warcraft 3 compatability issues?

Running WinXP and using a Voodoo 3 3000 video card. I keep getting this fatal error. I'm trying to figure out if I need to update my drivers.

I do agree with that, but I rarely play PC games, so spending $100 on a new card wouldn't be worth it. I just need to find the right #%(&#(*& driver so I can play this damn game! I get about 5 to 10 minutes into it and it crashes on me!

well you spent arond $50 for the game and it does not run so I would seriously consider getting a better video card.

the voodoo 3 card is on the minimum specs however the recommended specs require a 32 MB video card.

I would say always use the recommended specs as the minimum since the developers barely getting a system to run the game with tweaking is not where I would like to be.

it also looks like the voodoo 3 is only supported if you run win 2k, 98 or Me

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=awr0555p

they even list the driver version for it.

glitches even then

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=msi0571p

sorry

Ah the joys of PC gaming. $50 for a game, only to find out you need to spend another $100 or more to play it on your system.

I had to update my Intel ATA drivers so that my cdrom would work properly with the heavy security on the disc

actually often the problems are using minimum specs and trying to run the game based on that. I have never had a game not run on my systems before.

Of course many have those problems

If the game developers would be more specific about what systems will really play a game this would not happen as often.

Systems are so different, that it's hard for developers to be more specific. Even systems from different manufactures with the same specs sometimes perform differently.

I agree however in this case it says the voodoo 3 will work however it will not work in windows XP it turns out although windows XP is also listed as one of the OSes that the game will run in.

They should have just left the voodoo 3 off the list since it really does not work with all the operating systems stated. Of course they do not do this for one reason- they get the sale and once the software is opened it is not returnable. so the consumer spends days trying to get it to work then in frustration they upgrade until it works if they really want the game to play or they
are just plain screwed.

Retail System Requirements:
Windows 98 / 2000 / ME / XP:
400 MHz Pentium II or equivalent
128 MB of RAM
8 MB 3D video card (TNT, i810, Voodoo 3, Rage 128 equivalent or better) with DirectX® 8.1 support
700 MB HD space
4X CD-ROM drive

Voodoo 3 3DFX :Tested driver version:Windows 98 / ME - 1.07.00
Windows 2000 - 1.03.00 Graphical glitches

so they list the card and list XP and never bothered to test it under XP
http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mwr0555p

The voodoo 5 (and 4 I assume) are in the same boat. not tested in XP. I know 3DFX is dead ;however, either test it in all the supported OSes or leave it off and give the detailed information online so that people can read up and decide before buying.

this is my opinion- I just hate people losing $50 due to trusting what a company puts on their boxes

No kidding. That's one the reasons I despise PC gaming. It's really only for those with the money and patience to keep their system upgraded every year or two if they want to play the latest games at decent settings.

It's rare to go into a busy EB and not hear someone complaining that a game they bought won't work, or doesn't run as well as they expected.

It's even worse in cases like this where the labeling is crappy and somewhat misleading.

I'll stick with consoles where my money is a $5 investment, and every game will work right out of the box at the optimal setting.

I have successfully been using my Voodoo 3 2000 card in Windows XP Pro with Warcraft 3 without any problems at all.

I am using these drivers:

Both links seem to be dead.

I've been pretty lucky with this game I guess. I'm only running an o/c celeron (400) and a 32 mb tnt2 video card and it works ok on my pc. A little jerky when there's a lot of action on the screen. I think I just need to lower the resolution some more though.

But it's Blizzard, so I'm not really expecting the graphics to look that good.

Well, I just checked them and they work for me. Hopefully they'll work for Deftones when he checks back in.

Right now, my big problem is trying to win the 30 minute timed/infected caravan mission on hard. What a pain!

Ok, this may be a stupid question, but what do I do when I download the drivers? I use the install feature, and that's all, right?

Yeah, I believe you just run the setup.exe and that takes care of it.

Well, thanks for all the help guys. I decided to go out and buy a new video card. I didn't want to spend the cash, but I work part time at Best Buy, so I got a really good deal on a Geforce 4 64MB card.

Gcribbs, hey, buddy, I wanted to say this on the board as well as in my email back to you. Thank you a million times over for offering to send me a Geforce 2 video card for free. Not many people would offer that up. I truly appreciate it and will not forget your kindness.
