As I incorrectly stated before, how many wins are need to stay in the "PRO" league, as to not have to go through the whole thing again??

It depends not on win percentage, but on you ranking in the league (look at each league page) The top 30 or so advance, the middle stay, the bottom drop to the next lower league (or out if they are in the last league).

This is on the bottom of every league page, it's even color coded.

Okay, my Pro-league qualification strategy:

Have a high win percentage and a lot of games before I appear on the list in a few days. That will make me less succeptable to getting flogged by people trying to overtake me. We'll see how it works.

In the meantime feel free to play me with your farm teams as much as you like, or wait until the end of the season while I'm gone... whatever you like :)

If this strategy doesn't work, I'll stay off the radar and sneak in next season. No big deal.

I was somewhat there last season and recruited the help of my fellow DVDTalkers. Needless to say, my team made the list clean as a whistle. My % jumped about .100 in just one day. -eek-

So my advise...
Don't play too many games (so that increasing your % would be rather easy)
Don't worry. We'll get you there.

LISTEN TO US! Don't play a bunch of games - then it's just harder for everyone to boost your percentage.

Quite possibly the most asked question today, AFAIK we are playing just one days worth off games since we have no catch up to do. :)

To give you an idea, I went 9-9 in the 8th league last season and got demoted back to the juniors. Duhhh!

depends on which 'pro league' division

junior league? pretty much everyone gets promoted in the junior league.. back when I was in the junior league, you only needed like 4 wins to get promoted... but now they have more teams in, with the same amount of promotions, I assume it takes more

with the 8th division.. it seems to be about 12 wins?

havent really paid much attention to the ones higher..

well this guy here (http://smallball3.prognet.com/go/on.ball.team?tid=51503) is obviously bending the rules some.

he is number 1 on the pro league qualifier league at around 91-4.

he is a 6* team so maybe some of our big dogs could knock him down a notch.

Heh.. yeah.. he probably has a few test teams, or just plays all 1* teams.

Check out one of his opponents.

Just yesterday and today he played them 10 times and slaughtered them.

And other opponents are like 1 or 2* teams.

Are there rules against having other teams?

Also, anyone know how long it takes for TP to fill up now? Looks to me like it's less than 18 hours as previously posted, but I'm not sure. I can't remember when I trained earlier today but my regular players are already more than half full again.

i have some spare teams that i go up against too but not like that guy.

i do it very rarely.

Well technically it's not much different than gathering the support of a bunch of DVD Talk farm teams to boost your rating :) As long as it's just to get into the pro-leagues I don't think it's that big of a deal. Still pisses me off since he's not one of us, but it's no less fair, is it? Just my opinion.

I'm still in favor of whooping him if people want to gang up on him, of course :D

no rules against multiple teams
most of the regulars in the smallball forum have several strong teams
the commish just doesnt want a bunch of dead teams

Bench is filling up every 8 hours
starters are filling up every 16 hours

Your team's uniforms are so close to the color of the field, my men can't see them. It's like they're camoflauged. They're confused. They get up to the plate and don't know what to do.

I may have to sacrifice this season... :(

As I've been fearing for a week now, my #1 pitcher, though fully maxed out on pitching (pitching training won't yield ANY more pitching skill points after 1-2 rounds of stars), is starting to get hammered. Looks like I'm going to have to take my big home run hitter (the guy who I think has the potential to be the best pitcher) and retire his bat. It'll probably take a good 4-5 days to find out if it works...

Thus the importance of making your first task in SmallBall to truly find your best pitcher. Ah, hindsight... :)

Correct. Day 2 just started. 1st day of the season is the exception. Each new day the rest of the season begins at 9PM Pacific, 12 Eastern.

P.S. I want back in 2nd Division :( All close games, but I can't win in 1st yet. 0-3 now. I just hope I can make the pro leagues so this season isn't a total wash. Ugh. Somebody peg me with a cracker.

Yeah, I did, or at least, I have identified the guy who I THINK will be the best pitcher. This was like 5 or 6 weeks ago, when I took all my positional players and had them do nothing but pitching for 5 days or so. The guy who sorted out at the top happened to lead my team in batting average and home runs every season. Thus you can imagine my resistance to bail on his awesome hitting to see if he could dethrone my ace. I decided to see how my ace would hold up as I started competing against the better Small Ball teams out there.

The guy who is my current ace is the guy I've been using all along -- got lucky on that one I guess. But when fully maxed out, he's lucky to hit 103 on the gun, and against 7-star teams, he's starting to get hammered.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the loss of my best hitter though. If this guy really does become my ace, how much would that suck that my best hitter was also my best pitcher?

yea, i hear ya
i had that monumental slump last season.. and my guys have slowly been pulling themselves out of it.. they arent doing terrible now.. but I think they would be much better off if I stopped worrying about games for awhile and just worked on their training.
of course, that would probably kill my pro league games and I would end up in the 2nd division next season..
but sometimes I guess you have to make the sacrifices in order to build up for the future..
otherwise, they will continue to limp along and do well enough to stay where they are.. but wont really excel until they get the attention they need ;)

Ohhh. A missed catch by my damn left fielder broke up the shutout in the bottom of the 5th. Ags are leading 1-0.

Ags ended up winning 2-1. I'm proud of my guys for keeping it close.

Here's a random question. How come it's not ok for someone in the league to give their team to someone else, yet it's ok to have someone else train your team? :hscratch:

Isn't that basically the same thing? If I were to let someone who's been doing this for 4 months train my 3 week old team for me for a few days, doesn't that give my team an unfair advantage against other teams whose owners have my level of experience? It's kinda like sending your team off to a special clinic for a few days. :)

Not really, I'm sure people don't leave it to chance.

Harrisburg Pirates are away for a week, he left me a specific training schedule to use in DT (50% running/50%contact hitting on this on this day-all running for everyone excpet pitcher on this day.... etc. ) I am just setting it up and hitting autotrain. Then I print the small report each day to give to him when he returns. I don't think anyone would just give thier team to someone and say "train them any way you want." At least I wouldn't!!!

And on the flip side, I would never take the responsibility of someone asking me to train them for a week and just leaving it up to me.

basically.. we decided that we all have lives outside of smallball.. so we dont want to penalize a team if they are going on vacation or cant get to a computer for several days.

we have learned there are alot of bugs in the holiday tickets
and your team goes to hell if you use passive training

so the obvious answer is to get someone to train your team

we try to keep it so that someone from a different division trains your team, so there isnt any conflict of interest

and generally.. you just put your team on vacation so that your opponents all initiate the games.. and someone else keeps up your training (normally by the schedule you leave them)..

now if someone was here.. and had someone else training there team.. that would be really bad..

but it just wouldnt make sense to penalize a guy for taking his kids to disney world for a few days.

What we need to remember is that this is just a game. Sure it may be important to some people but (I'm guessing) to most people it's just entertainment. Now, if there's going to be a debate about allowing people to train your team then maybe we shouldn't allow it. I want to keep people happy and right now I feel that there's some people that are upset with the whole vacation thing.

Perhaps we should just do this instead:
If you're going to be on vacation for less than 1 week then turn on PT and post a message here that you'll be on vacation and the rest of us will challenge your team allowing your team to be trained. I know PT isn't the greatest thing in the world but it'll keep your team from slipping too much.

But finally, remember this is for fun and if there's too many rules then this will cease to be fun.

I disagree with this only because we in the first season all saw how bad a team could slip being on passive training... It is just a game and there for as few rules and regulations as possible should be inserted to allow the most enjoyment.

I really think this is a non -issue. Nobody is protesting. If I want someone where I work to train my team while I am away, I should be able to do that. It would be trained the same as if I was doing it myself. No harm in that.

I would rather use a vacation ticket than put my team on PT.

the gay team was only gone for a week
he had one of the best teams in the league when he left.. when he came back after being on passive training (with plenty of us challenging him to make sure they got trained).. his team was horrible (no offense lat)
i would be hard pressed to ever consider putting my team on passive training

didnt we already have a full discussion on this topic before.. and the overwelming majority agreed that you should be able to have someone (from a different division) train your team while your away.. and that you just have to put your team on vacation, so that your opponent initiates the games

Andy: Myself, I've only been playing smallball for 6 weeks, wish it was 4 months.

Over this weekend, I've trained Kings Horror and 88 Texas Aggies. This is just helping out friends. Andy, if you ever ask, I'll do the same for you!

Let's remember this is for fun, I have had serveral people ask me to advise them on their teams and in some cases, I log on view their DT stats and make suggestions, other times I give them a clinic.

Should this be incorporated into a league rule? Let's be serious..... :) In August I'm taking off for a week and I hope one of the people I've helped can help me out!

BTW: In the case of the 88 Texas Aggies, he left me specific ideas for how he wanted his team trained. Did I follow them? That's the risk he takes! :)

Really if anybody ever asks for my advise and assistance, I'm willing to help them out. Isn't that what this league should really be about, friends helping friends?

the conflict of interest i was referring to by having someone in the same division train your team..w ould be like.. not training the team before your schedule game against them, to give them an advantage.. or using them in any other way to help your team move up. not that we would have to worry about anyone doing anything like that.. but its an issue that we should just avoid completely.

if anyone feels that there is a chance that having someone else train your team while your on vacation, might give them better training then they would normally get with their rightful owner..

maybe we should have an addition to the rule that requires the team that is going on vacation to have a strict training schedule and that the team doing the training, follows it exactly, no exceptions (which means, just because you see that his centerfielding is missing the ball.. if fielding is not on the schedule, you dont train in fielding)..
most of us are using DT, so we could go as far as mapping out how many balls on the auto trainer we want used in each area..
this would insure there is no unfair advantage by letting a better trainer take care of your team. of course, it couldnt be monitored or enforced.. but I think we can all trust each other!

I will be gone for 10 days starting this sunday. If people have a problem with me having someone else train my team then I won't do it. When I get back though, if my team sucks I'll probably quit because it's not worth the time I've put into it to have my team go to crap because of a league rule. I'll probably be gone for 10 days or so every month until my girlfriend moves up here.

As far as someone else training my team giving me an advantage... I have a way I like my players to train and the last thing I want is someone else messing with that so I'll give detailed instructions. I don't want to fall behind because of someone else's training style and I also don't want to get ahead. It's my team.

I was thinking about this more from noticing people say they were training someone else's team, and seeing people who are on vacation for awhile still doing pretty well. That just put the thought into my head. Of course, being beaten by a team on vacation and seeing that it's being trained by someone in the Premiership division made me more vocal. :)

I knew what you were referring to. What I was trying to say is that while it keeps there from being that possibility, it creates the possibility that putting a team into the hands of a more experienced owner could put the other less experienced owners at a disadvantage.

Again, I don't mean to make a big deal out of this. I'm sure my team will go to mush probably in the next month or so, so I'm looking for all the glory I can find before that happens. ;)

Let's look even deeper into what could be a conflict? WhoGirl and I know eachother, if WhoGirl's team beats me the last day of the season, I finish third. If I beat her, I finish second (this happened two seasons ago). Does she let me win since we know eachother? Hell no, she does what I expect her to do, she beats my brains in.

Last season WhoGirl trained Cryptik28's team while he took a hard earned vacation. Why did he have her train them? Because he trusts her! Would she ever betray that? Come on, are you kidding? This is a game. And no matter how we train or this and that the computer does the games. If I was trusted by somebody I would not betray it for a stupid computer game!

The Red Raiders, every game I played them at top form, same lineup that TDD had left them, except I did use his other pitcher for all the games since he was better.

Let's focus more on helping eachother, beating up on common enemies, and lets not take this too seriously. I for one, if it got too serious would be the first to say forget it!

I think this whole discussion is a little absurd, as there would be no way to prove whether the training regimen was followed exactly, etc... nor should the person HAVE to if they don't have time, etc.

Technically, I could just pretend like I wasn't leaving town, have someone else train for me, initiate my games, and nobody would know the difference. It's an online game, for crying out loud. Let's keep it simple :)

Do we really need rules regarding this? Maybe it's time for a poll?

Question: blueshirts is supposed to initiate a game with me sometime today. I see that yesterday he had a forfeit. He is also supposed to initiate a game with a [v] Horror DVD Talkers. If say, it's 8:50 here on the West Coast and Day 2 is about to end, can I initiate that game or should I just accept the forfeit? Also, hypothetically, of course, is there anything we can do about a team that seems to be forgetting about the league?

of course, that would probably kill my pro league games and I would end up in the 2nd division next season..
but sometimes I guess you have to make the sacrifices in order to build up for the future..
otherwise, they will continue to limp along and do well enough to stay where they are.. but wont really excel until they get the attention they need ;)

I'm probably not going to have it as tough as you did last season. I'll win my fair share of games, but I have no aspirations of making the playoffs this year, and might also get bounced out of the pro league while I redo my pitching staff.

But you hit it squarely on the head. I can keep the status quo with my team and be an average Premiership team, or I can sacrifice this season in order to (hopefully) become a dominant team next season.

I have been thinking of that but it really wouldn't work with the current league format. If there was interdivision games then we'd have to get rid of the Premiership, First Division, etc and move it to something like MLB but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I have someone, but thanks. :)

BTW, if someone gets their brother or cousin or something to train their team, what's the ruling on that?

I dont' think we need ANY rule at all about training your team. There's no way to detect who's training a team. i could leave town and not train at all and nobody would know. I could have the SmallBall comissioner himself train my team and nobody would know. If you can find someone to do it, great... Even if you are in town and want someone else to train it, great... your loss if you're not getting to know your own team. If you follow these threads and have a basic understanding of the way Smallball works, you shouldn't have an advantage by having someone else train any way.

I have no problem with recommending that people put "Bob is training my team while I'm on vacation until Monday" as their quote. I dont think it should be required, but it's nice. Just be glad that here in the forum we can find people to train for us while we're away and not have to go on passive, which is the only alternative, which I will not do having seen the bad results.

We certainly need rules on the league, but in the end it's just for fun and run mainly on the honor system... I think this is one issue we don't need another rule about. Just my opinion though, of course.

As a side note, if people go on vacation, at the very least I think we should say that they should put their return date in the quote so it doesn't hold up the playoffs, etc if we're not sure where they are. Either that, or add a "vacation message" that they can enter that in. That would be best, but not sure if dancinns wants to take that on just yet.

Pharoh
07-03-02, 06:51 PM
I cant believe that this has received so much time. Of course it should not matter who trains your team. Its your team to do what you wish. The only arguement against it is giving a new team to a more seasoned veteran who would presumably be a better trainer, thus helping the new team more and giving it an unfair advantage over comparable competition who didnt have this advantage. However everyone here will always gladly give advice and counsel to any "rookie" who asks for it. So any training "secrets" are all easily found within these very threads already, or are there for the asking. With that objection gone, can there be any other reasons to prohibit it? Bottom line, lets continue to have fun. (Except of course when I keep stinking up the joint). ;)

No.. wouldn't effect my schedule, but it would give an advantage to those on the west coast.

at 12am EST, its 9pm PST. therefore people are still up and can have their teams ready to play, etc.
at 12am PST, its 3am EST, and I'm sound asleep. if people are still up on the west coast, they may be playing teams that aren't quite up to par. Granted, I know this is one of the downfalls of any system.

I'm more partial to the midnight to midnight est schedule, as it seems more fair to both coasts.

Man, I missed alot today after Dark Elf handed me my ass this morning.

Other people training other teams in time of need seems like no big deal to me. It's not like those of us who have been here from the start haven't been helpful the newer people lear the better working of smallball, so why couldn't another owner help someone out when they are going to be gone? We mine as well stop giving hints when asked, ok that is an extreme but I really so not see the issue in this.

if they really wanted to sneak a game in.. the can do it anytime during the night
actually.. with it being 9pm pst right now.. alot of us east coasters really are already asleep.. but thats not the issue
the issue is that if smallball goes by pst.. then when a team starts a game at 901pm pst.. its going to still say the day before, even though our league treats it as the current day
i know this has been considered a problem with a couple people (not naming any names)

yea.. she started that game before she left the house and I watched the first inning before I left for work
i saw her put up 3 quick runs and thought it would get ugly
but it ended up a 3-0 game, so it wasnt so bad

I too watched the first inning I was ready to pull the pitcher. ;) I did at least score 2 in the last couple of innings I think to make it close. Congrats to Her. She should be leading the second now.

Believe it or not, it did affect my sleep schedule at the beginning of the season :D

Tuesday had a 9AM start time (Pacific) I was in bed at 8:00 -eek-

Normally I would have dozed off for another hour or so (I had been up until around 2:30 working) but the first thing to cross my mind was "SMALLBALL SEASON... STARTS... TODAY!!!" and I hadn't trained.

Sure enough, I got all trained up and ready to play by 8:55. I would hate to have to do this every day :)

I like it midnight-midnight PST, personally. Of course, it seems to be a West Coast vs. East Coast issue and I'm on the West side, yo.

Not worried about it.

Side issue: I am on East coast, but like West coast time start, so thats my vote.

Im an east coaster and prefer the pst start time for the reason I listed
so that the teams are listed as the correct day, on the recent games list

ok.. check this out
recently.. I took my test team off passive training because I want to hurry up and get them up to 6 stars so they will be a better team to beat..

well anyways.. I just started a standard training session (of course I didnt buy deluxe trainer for them).. and noticed that only 11 of my guys were on the field
the left fielder was nowhere to be found
he never showed up in the trainer.. I should bench him for skipping practice!!

Actually I am, I discovered that fix!!!! Twikoff steals all his fixes from me and takes credit - there should be a rule about that!

Oh, and I agree, if we start having too many unenforceable rules to satisfy the whims of whiney teams, then , I will probably be out as well. If I go on vacation, it is my perogative to have someone else train my team. And nobody would know about it anyway.

And give me a break - how much could a Smallball team improve in a week or less with even Billy Martin training them?????

Oh, and I find it incredibly strange that Mgfred "coaches" other teams. If I had couldn't figure this out on my own, or had to recruit outside help to play a game- then it just wouldn't be worth it - or fun (no offense Fred).
