I just finished doing the same research. Here's the skinny:

The Best (but expensive $700-$800)
Pioneer Elite 47A
Denon 2800 mk2

These have great pictures and also the Pioneer has SACD.

Very Very Good
Panasonic RP91

Very Good
Toshiba 5700
Pioneer RP56

I bought the Toshiba, it has a very good picture and the sound is just a set lower, by the reviews (I think it sounds great). It cost me $225 at eCost. (I used the extra $500 that I saved to get a new Yamaha receiver).

Hope that helps

The best is arguably the Camelot Roundtable

To answer your question it is going to depend on your definition of affordable and what features you are looking for like progressive scan.

Sorry, I meant the best under $1000. Thanks for the correction.

I would say the best is the Meridian

but at that price there is no doubt that the Pioneer is the one. It has DVD-A and SACS but its bass managment is only for center and rears the fronts default to large. You could always use analog outs to your reciever and do the bass management there.

good luck

Thanks for the relpies-----I just saw a JVC XV-S40BK in a store and have read some reviews on Amazon-----reviews are positive----But I saw a number of complaints with (150-250 dollars) panasonics (not the 600-700 dollar ones though)!!

Go with Elite. I love my Elite, it was pricey, but I have a top notch picture.
