Screen Ratio should be?

DVDTalkers,
please help me out.....

on my Pioneer DVD player, the screen aspect ratio are as follow..
P&S, WS, Letterbox.

It came as WS as the factory setting...which one should I select to view my DVDs?
for example on 1:85 movies, it fill my whole tv screen but on 2:35 movies, there are black bars on top and bottom.

Thanks!

You didn't say what kind of television you have.

If you have a 4:3 telly, set it to "Letterbox."

If you have a 16:9 telly, set it to "WS."

A 4:3 set is a normally proportioned television set. A 16:9 set is a widescreen television, which have become more popular in recent years. It sounds like you have a 4:3 set, but I'm not sure.

To add on to Groucho's answer... if you have a 4:3 Sony WEGA television, then you can take advantage of the "anamorphic squeeze" option to display anamorphic widescreen DVDs in higher resolution.

1. Set your DVD player to output a "widescreen" signal.
2. Go to the Setup Menu on your television, and turn the "16 x 9 Enhanced" option On. Certain models will perform the "squeeze" automatically.

Do a search for "anamorphic squeeze" in the Hardware Forum and you'll be able to find more info on the topic.

Moving to Hardware.

It sounds to me like you have a non-widescreen TV. If that's the case, you should have the player set to letterbox, as Groucho said.

You will still have black bars with 1.85:1 movies. The setting isn't intended to stretch the picture just so it fills the screen.
