I'm buying a new receiver but am keeping my old speakers that are in fine shape. Is there any point in getting a receiver with banana plug outs if my speakers don't have them. And nowhere on my speakers does it say their watts. They're kinda old and aren't listed on the Advent website. Is there any device or anything that can measure their watts? Maybe I'll just try emailing Advent with the product numbers though I don't remember seeing them when I was looking for the watts.

any help is greatly appreciated,
thanks.

Banana plugs will make it easier to connect your speaker wires to the receiver instead of just having exposed wire.

You can buy them at most electronic stores like Best Buy and Circuit City.

I don't know about your watts question. You might try searching groups.google.com and see if someone has posted the specs for your speaker model.

Almost always the worst case for a speaker is too little power and not too much.

Unless these are very small bookshelf speakers or you are buying some monster receiver, you should be fine.

Ditto to Brian's answer. It is very, very rare that speakers are actually "blown" from too much power. I have physically seen a pair of speakers rated at 150 watts RMS running on a 1000 watt amp. It is almost always when someone asks too much of their receiver power-wise that things go kaput.

As far as banana plugs go they are mostly a covenience making it easier to connect and disconnect.
