its about time to join in!
come on guys.. its a hell of a lot of fun, and only takes a few minutes a day to maintain a team (although it might take a little more, once your addicted ;) )
we have 33 solid teams already.. but there are too many other big sports fans in this forum, that arent playing..
no worries about having to catch up.. we have divisions based on skill.. so you get to start out at a weaker level anyways.. and work your way up..
and as Ive said before.. its MUCH easier to catch up to everyone, then it is to pull away when your ahead with smallball
besides.. it will give you something to do, in between posts :)
signup for smallball and download the software at http://www.smallball.com

you spent 15 minutes or so, twice a day.. training your players
and have them play simulated games
but the best part, is playing against this group here at dvdtalk.. the trash talking, the tight games, the upsets, etc.. i dont think any of us would be as addicted to the game, if it wasnt for having such a kickass league setup among dvdtalk members.

training process.. depends on whether you shell out the $19.99 for the deluxe trainer or not
without DT.. you have players on a diamond.. and you drag them to different areas.. set them to throw to each other.. to pitch.. to bat.. etc.. and they gain skill points for their training
with DT.. you get a pitching area, with a radar gun.. you get a contact batting cage that tells you the % you hit the ball.. you get a power batting cage that tells you how far you are hitting it.. you get a catching machine to practice fielding.. you get a throwing pit to just play catch.. then another area to work on distance throwing.. and there is a track around the area, to work on running.. and of course a diamond in the middle, if you want to do the old fashion type of workout
basically.. you train your players to run, field, bat, etc...
and they increase in skill level (from 1 star to 9 stars as you go)
and depending on how good you are at training them, will effect the results of your games..
you get training potential to use.. you have 12 pieces to the pie.. your starters get a piece every 2 hours and your bench players get a piece every hour.. so you only have to train your bench players twice a day, and your starters once a day to keep from losing training potential.
its alot of fun.. i would suggest trying it out with just the standard trainer at first.. although if you think its something you could really get into.. the deluxe trainer is alot of the fun..
I was going out with the guys last friday night.. and asked my wife to train my team so I didnt lose trianing potential.. she enjoyed the deluxe trainer so much.. she had to start her own team.. just so she could train them.. she doesnt even care much about playing the games.. the training process is that much fun.. although Im sure she will probably end up getting in the dvdtalk league before long too.

thats why she has a pitcher throwing over 100 mph.. after only three days in smallball
and why she is up to 4 star so quick
because I warned her against even attempting to bat until she found her two best pitchers.. and then started training the other guys in running, catching, and throwing...
stay out of the cage for the first week or so.. and you will end up with a much more solid team when your ready..
then when your ready to start batting.. dont touch the power cage until your guys hit above 70% consistently.. not just when they get up to 70%, but when they can actually stay up above that every single time.
could you imagine how good our teams could be.. if we had it all to do over again, with what we know now? ;)

So, out of curiosity, I created a team, and in my first few games, I've beaten the crap out of my opponents. That's certainly not a testament to my skill, as I've barely done anything. So my question is, how does this get interesting? I've trained my team for 3 days now, and I'm already pretty bored with it. You're right, it is pretty boring just playing random teams but once league play begins you get into competition with other teams, you'll eventually build rivals that will hopefully fuel your fire to make your team better. The competition in the league is what makes this so fun.

Results of the games are just randomized based on your team's various skill levels, right? So I can't even manage bringing in a relief pitcher or a pinch runner or anything during a game?

I hardly watch the games anymore (only in playoff time). But I am still hooked to be better than everyone else which didn't happen this season either... Me and Real Estate guy have had battles in the playoffs all three years he is my nemisis if you will but I got him last season (read my sig) I was on the edge of my seat and jumping up and down on every play/bad call. As for the Deluxe trainer it gives you more control over the players training regimen which in my opinion makes the game more fun. If you want to see how addicting it really is check to see how many views/posts each of the threads have gotten and there have been alot just read through some of the early ones when we were all learning what to and what not to do. The game might not be for everyone, I was skeptical at first in fact my exact quote was "Why should I pay 19.99 for a game that gives me no direct control?" But as you can tell I am an avid fan now and will continue to be for as long as I have the time to play.

took me a year to find it :
MY DT ESSAY FOR NON DT USERS
I think there is a HUGE advantage: Here's the 4 big reasons why:
1. Relative vs. Actual Skills
When you sort your players in the standard trainer by say, throwing, you get a list of their RELATIVE throwing power to each other. Or say you have a pitcher you think is pretty good because he plays alot and is at the top of your throwing list. Not necessarily true!
Throwing:
When I got the DT I found that my outfielders were throwing less than 100 ft! Now they all throw 130-150. Now my right fielder can throw to 1st and 2nd from the warning track.
Pitching:
Same here, I thought I had a good pitcher, but when I got the Dt I found he was only pitching 55-65MPH! Now he is over 100.
Running:
A big part of smallball, it make the difference between a single and a triple! In the regular trainer you have to keep clicking and dragging them, in the DT just put them on the track for a pie, and watch their running get better by 15-20 (more on that later).
Batting:
Goes without saying, put your players in the skill cage until they are up there, then switch em to the power cage!! You can really see how bad your batters are!!!
2. Wasted Training
When you are in Standard trainer, everyone is training all at once! In DT there are rest areas. You can train each player individually on one skill without wasting the other players training potential. Or, you can set up a schedule and watch those little guys run from practice area to practice area.
What takes you 4-5 days to accomplish in the RT you can do in one day on the DT (true for all skills).
3. The "SMALL REPORT"
After each training session you get a report on your desktop of how much each player increased in each skill. This is helpful to see if a player is "maxing out" in an area. If he is , they will get only .01 gains or so, even if you gave them alot of pie. Sometimes my runners get 15-20! You also get batting skill, contact, and power broken out.
And last but not least!
IT's FUN!! I have had had more fun with the DT than I have with any video game, DVD, PC game, that I have ever played!
It really makes it a "whole new ballgame."
Doug.

06-15-02, 01:38 PM
Dammit. Three days into this and I'm already $19.95 poorer. I saw the power of the DT when I played a team I was sure I could beat. My hitters kept hitting, but no one could ever get to third because the other team's fielders were so good/fast. I also wanted to know how fast my pitchers threw. I figured that since another player ranked higher than my pitcher in pitching, that he'd be a stud. Turns out they both throw in the 30s. So now I'm looking for pitching potential elsewhere.
IdgIe49
06-15-02, 02:43 PM
heh AndyCapps... before I got the DT my pitcher was throwing in the 30's too. Now, my backup, he throws about 10 mph faster than my main pitcher (backup - 105mph, main - 95). I dont usually switch them because my main pitcher has more experience. :) Though, I really doubt experience has any effect since I train my backups like they were the main guys, as well. Just keep one or two in the pitchers mound, and drive on.

Absolutely. It is the difference between needing 4 hits to score a run vs. 3 or even 2. That is very important since pitching and defense improve much faster than hitting, at least initially. Speed is vital on defense of course too.

Noooooo! My little dude's aren't ready yet for you big rough and tumble DVDtalk big leaguers!... I only ask that you be gentle with them. :D
On a side note, I got the Deluxe Trainer and its definitely pretty cool. I'm just itching for their training potential to recharge so that i can mess with them even more.

You know you have it bad when instead of getting a beer and putting on a baseball game on tv, you get a beer and watch a small ball game on your computer.

So what does it say when you get a beer, flip through 7 games on MLB EI, AND watch Small Ball games?

Can we close this thread and start a new one? I know that I avoided smallball threads at first because they were long. When you started this this thread a whole bunch of us (including myself), signed up.

soon enough.... once TDD comes back
but we dont even wanna open up the can of worms that would come along with allowing single players to have multiple teams in the league

Hmm...ok so I signed up. I was about to start naming everything, but I wasn't really in the most creative mood so I just decided to do it later. In my inbox, I get three emails saying teams challenging me? I'm confused.........

Will you ever have a Mac version or a Netscape version?
SmallBall is a standalone product that runs under the Java VM. We recommend using Internet Explorer 5.5 as a way to make sure the VM is loaded. Netscape works as well for the web pages. In Theory Mac users can run with a Java VM too but, we have not tried it yet.
Anyone get this to work on their mac?

dancinns will have to play with the numbers when he comes back
generally.. we have had 4 divisions with 11 teams in each division
and each season.. there is one or two dead teams to remove.
I know that one team is being removed this season, and the overpaid players are taking that spot.. not sure if any other spots are opening up.. if not, dancinns had talked about adding a 12th team to the 3rd division anyways.

hi,
I know it has been explained before, but what are the star ratings beside each team name? how do star rating go up? Is it possible to have a 7* team without the DT? how long does it take to add *?
thanks

star rating represents your team skill level
they go from 1-9 (there is talk that 10 is possible, but Ill believe it when I see it)
star rating goes up by training your team.. you get skill gain when you train.. you lose some skill through the day.. so you just have to make sure you train more then you lose.
1-4 stars come really quick
5 stars doesnt take very long either
its not until 6 stars that it really takes any time to get there..
i would say you should be 5 stars within the first two weeks..
6 stars a week or two later..
and then 7, 8, and 9 all take much longer to get to
possible without DT? sure, you can do it.. alot of people can..
although, if your going to get addicted to the game, you will definitly want DT, no doubt.. well worth the 19.99
I got my test team up to high 6 star / low 7 star with only ST.. since then, I purchased DT for them also because its hard to tell exactly where they stand in each area with just standard trainer.

when your team gets better.. games will only take 30-45 minutes max
plus teams can challenge you
or you could play alot of weak teams and win with the mercy rule.. in these games, it might not take more then half an inning to play a game

As soon as I get my own Mac I'll try it out. I'll probably be running OS 8.6 but I'll give it the ol' college try :)

Welcome to the league. I'm your commish and I handle most of the website problems. blah, blah, blah....I'll fire off an e-mail to you tonight explaining the league in further description.
But basically, if you have SmallBall questions just ask them in the league thread. Scoring issues, either me, Copenhagen, or Blake.
