Check out William Orbit's "Pieces In a Modern Style." Also, the remix of Barber's Adagio for Strings which is on a bonus CD included with Orbit's CD is off the hook.

For a great techno/classical combination get "Girl-Boy Song" by Aphex Twin. It is a GREAT song, trust me. For some rock/classical check out some stuff by Spiritualized - specifically the song "Out of Sight," - and Sigur Ros' song "Viorar vel til loftarasa."

Going back a few years...

The album: Days of Future Passed by the Moody Blues (1967)

The whole album was a mix of classical (with an orchestra) and rock.

Here is a 30 second clip from The Afternoon:

Nights in White Satin is also from this album.

To add to the hip-hop/classical idea: Andre Nikatina - "Bakin' Soda in Minnesota" and Kurupt - "Trylogy."

You might also like Apocalyptica's covers of Metallica songs on four cellos. Check out One and Fade to Black.

The Shining by Badly Drawn Boy... Amazing song.

Actually just buy the album The Hour of Bewilderbeast. It's not all what you're looking for, but its fantastic.

You can basically acquaint yourself with that 'sub-genre' of rock known as progressive rock. And don't let some twit music critic tell you that none of it is good, because many of them are frustrated musicians themselves with pasty faces and chips on their narrow shoulders.

The best resources for looking into it, IMO, are:

rec.music.progressive (on usenet)

That's more a techno/Enya combination, IMO. It is a great song, though.
