I thought the movie was too melodramatic. It has good perfromances but thats it. I would rent it first. There are some reviews. dvdfile.com and hometheaterforum.com have reviewed it.

I didn't really like this movie. There are moments of comedy in it that work but I feel that the dramatic aspects are too silly. Sean Penn is basically rehashing Dustin Hoffman's Rainman character but he's not believable. Especially mixed with a cast of people who are truly mentally handicapped. I guess I fail to see the Oscar worthy performance. Then there is the story which may be the main part the failed for me. It's about his legal fight to regain custody of his daughter. I failed to see how he ever was allowed to have custody of her in the first place. This movie just didn't pull me in. I couldn't find many of the character's actions as rational.

Hollywood really needs a moratorium on "very special films about the mentally handicapped".

I was totally embarassed to be in the theater during this film. I had to stay because my wife loved it. All I saw was Sean Penn acting like he was retarded and it creeped me out. I wasn't surprised about his oscar nom, though. The story just didn't make sense either - how did he raise this 7 year old girl if all of a sudden he's not capable.......?

It kind of looked like a "Lifetime for Women" flick....
