Last year I conducted a poll on hometheaterforum and many of the movies that rated well on that poll are now out on DVD or are on the schedule for later this year or next year. Most of the time there isn't (or hasn't been) money, staffing or time to get bonus features onto them. But they are coming... even Four Flies on Grey Velvet, if it's feeling lucky.
This time around I thought I'd invite your opinions on a select batch of 11 titles, most of which are on the schedule for next year, but we have to pick the ones that get special features. Can you weigh in here?
Remember, bonus features cost money so these won't be double-disc editions, but we could try and avoid barebones. Here they are... have at it with suggestions and comments.
Murder on the Orient Express
Bugsy Malone
Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter and the Hammers
This Property is Condemned
Day of the Locust
The Geisha Boy, The Ladies Man, etc.
Wings
If
Foul Play
Darling Lili
Looking for Mr. Goodbar

If, as in Lindsay Anderson's If?
That, I feel, is one of the greatest films ever made. I would very much appreciate any sort of bonus materials you could get on it.
What would be the ETA on it?
BTW, thanks, Martin.
EDIT:
While I'm at it, I may as well inquire about Hitchcock's To Catch A Thief. Well?

I also think If is a VASTLY underrated and unknown little gem. It's been on my top 5 most wanted dvds since I first got into dvd. I don't know how many extras currently exist for this film but I would certainly love to hear malcolm mcdowell's thoughts on this early film.
Murder on the orient express and the hammers would also be good for extra features

Another Vote For Murder on the Orient Express...Here is a movie that begs for special features. Agatha Christie did not want the movie made before this time because censorship rules would have forced a change to the ending of the film. But by 1974 it could be made and the ending filmed just as it should have been. So a behind the scenes look at how it was finally able to be made would be great.
Moreover, the incredible cast in the film, from Albert Finney, to Vanessa Redgrave, John Gielgud, Sean Connery, Michael York, Wendy Hiller, Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam, Anthony Perkins...and the evil Richard Widmark make this film a true enjoyment to watch. An audio commentary showing how all the actors were able to be brought together to create the film would certainly enhance the viewing of the movie.
With the right features, this could be a big seller I would think.

I know they are not on the list, but how about Bogdanovich films- Targets and Daisy Miller, and of course Paper Moon? I'd love to see these, especially with a Bogdanovich commentary. All his films recently got a write-up in Entertainment Weekly and could use a DVD release! Thanks, Mr. Blythe!

more thanks, Martin, for seeking input here.
i feel eaxtly the same as a previous poster.
i've seen FOUL PLAY more times than i can remember, A Chase & Hawn commentary would make it an immediate purchase.
They had wonderful chemistry together and it would be great to see them participate.
also being a huge Caroline Munro fan, i would love to be able to own CAPTIAN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER . i'm pretty sure Ms Munro is retired and just works the convention circuit.
i'm sure see could be persuaded to indulge on some extras for this title, with the added incentive, that she can use her convention appearences to help stoke interest for it.
would also love to see a Clara Bow title get some indepth analysis, and Wings happens to be a great movie, besides.
in any event, those are all great titles, i can't wait to buy them, ( didn't see Let's Scare Jessica To Death , though...;) ) Whats really important is the best possible transfer.
you guys have a pretty solid track record in that regard, so whatever else you can manage will be more than appreciated

I'm not sure what extras to suggest, though it's of interest for little things like script, set design and cinematography. One of the best examples of those daringly pessimistic 70's films that they just don't make anymore, gosh darn it. At least as cult-worthy as If...

First off, Mr. Blythe your participation is most appreciated. Thank you. Some nice titles in the list that I look forward to adding to my collection.
In terms of extras, my favorites tend to be commentary tracks, deleted scenes / alternate takes, and items associated with the production including scripts, storyboards, marketing campaign materials, etc.

Thank you Martin Blythe for taking the time to post at various boards - It is very nice that Paramount adresses the public so directly. Also nice that Paramount has released and will be releasing a lot of the titles from the old HTF-poll. But untill now it seems to have been the "easiest/most mainstream" titles that has been released - hopefully you will soon be able to adress some of the other popular requested titles, like THE KEEP, DANGER: DIABOLIK, BLOOD AND ROSES and...
Martin, please stop making jokes about FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET :) - please just tell us, what we want to hear: Yes, Paramount is releasing it uncut and in OAR! Director Dario Argento has stated that he would love to be involved in the release.

That's a good crop Martin, and thanks for the chance to chime in again. What can I say? I'm a huge Hammer fan and can only get on my knees, grovel and beg while profusely salivating that Paramount treats their Hammer catalogue with extreme respect. Many Hammer personalities, both production staff and talent, are still around and, as evidenced by another dvd studio's successes, seem happy to participate in providing commentary and interviews regarding their work. Captain Kronos is a fine place to start, as it is not only a great movie in my eyes, but is also a popular one amongst Hammer fans and horror fans in general. But please don't stop there. I forget exactly which titles Paramount has, but I can certainly say that whatever Hammer you do have, I'm more than willing to buy copies of them, and would greatly appreciate any extras that Paramount could obtain for them.
Again Martin, thanks so much for listening.

Thank you Mr. Blythe for this opportunity.
I'd like to see special editions of Murder on the Orient Express and Bugsy Malone.
Of course, as if you already didn't know, many movie buffs would rather see special editions of some little known titles like The Indiana Jones Trilogy, Grease, Top Gun, Titanic, and The Jack Ryan Trilogy. Not that you asked-wink-.
Thank you for the special collector's editions Paramount has been putting out and the consistantly wonderful 16:9 enhanced widescreen tranfers of your films. I look forward to the rest of the special editions of the Star Trek films and the rumored Saturday Night Fever.

Mr. Blythe,
First off, let me get my vote in also for Murder on the Orient Express. Any x-tras you can do for this title would be great.
More importantly though, I just want to echo some other comments thanking you for giving us the chance to have some say on our favorite format. You won't be able to please everybody (or in some cases anybody) when it comes to extras on dvds, but very rarely, if ever do you find anyone that can complain with the effort that Paramount puts in the Transfer/Audio of their discs.
Keep up the great work on all fronts with your dvds, you guys are consistently one of the top studios out there with your output.
Thanks for your time,

p.s. now to be selfish, any update on some of your great Paul Newman titles like Nobody's Fool and Hud?? :-)

You beat me by one post, Peter. How dismaying to see no one else talking about Jerry Lewis' work. His films (alone but especially with Dean Martin) are long overdue for DVD. As far as special features, *now* is the time to get them. He's not going to be around for too many more years. It would be fascinating to hear him discuss his films, especially since he was such a force behind the camera (even if he wasn't directing).
For those who didn't catch it, Peter Bogdanovich paid great tribute to Lewis in a recent New York Times article. He was making the case for the Academy to award an honorary Oscar to Lewis for his creation and innovative use of the now-ubiquitous video monitor (via a video camera attached to the movie camera) that allows easy framing and ready playback during filming. As a friend, fan and film scholar, Bogdanovich would make an ideal companion for a Lewis commentary track. And it gets even better: They first met on the set of <b>The Ladies Man</b>, one of the first films to use the new technology, when Bogdanovich visited the set to write an article about Lewis for Esquire. This was five years before Bogdanovich became a director--with Lewis among his influences. The Esquire article would be a dandy extra, as well as notes about the technology and maybe demos and behind-the-scenes footage, plus interviews with both of them.
I'm also a big fan of Darling Lili. The DVD must have the longer cut, but maybe also an option to watch the shorter version. Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews could do a fun commentary. And won't a pristine digital edition be ideal for that crucial frame after her hat dance.
;)
I want all the other films, too.

Martin (a George Romerro film) would be a good choice:
Of course, if that is your name and not a choice, please disregard the above.
Out of the other choices, "If" (the '68 version) would be the movie I would buy out of the group. Note that www.allmovie.com gives it a 4.5 star rating ( http://www.allmovie.com/cg/avg.dll?p=avg&sql=A63498 ).
Any chance of some Spanish language movies? If so, please make them widescreen (anamporphic if possible) and make the subtitles optional (anything beyond that would be gravy).
Thanks for asking here!
Edit: OK, Martin's not a choice. So all of the listed movies will be released on DVD and you are just asking which ones should receive preferential treatment? Then I'll vote for "If". I've never seen it, but it sounds quite interesting.

The Ladies Man, Geisha Boy, Cinderfella, The Errand Boy, Who's Minding the Story and of course The Bellboy would be incredible special editions. Just right there you could have a priceless boxset! Since Jerry is still with us, audio commentary would be amazing, as well as production notes, script changes, cut footage, theatrical trailers as well as behind the scene movies as many of these have been shown on AMC and A&E Biography. Definatly have to vote for Jerry Lewis. I gotta agree getting a barebones version of The Nutty Professor was a let down. A SE would be wonderful!!

You absolutely must give MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS superior treatment. This is THE stand out title of the bunch that would warrant even a 2-disc treatment.
A retrospective commentary with director Sidney Lumet would be great (if he was willing)! I doubt a (surviving) cast commentary would be possible, but maybe the screenwriter Paul Dehn is still available too.
Does Paramount still have any casting session tapes or old rehearsal footage? I'd watch footage of Albert Finney being put into costume! Did Paramount make Lumet film a blasphemous alternate ending that nobody knows about??? THAT would sell.
(Speaking of Lumet, how about a DVD release of SERPICO???
That movie could use a remastering).
IF.... is a very close second. It would be great to hear a commentary by Malcolm McDowell on the experience of making the film (I'm sure he's had to recount it an infinite number of times before....).
And they all better be in anamorphic original-aspect ratio!!!
I'm not sure if I would really want to hear what Jerry Lewis has to say about his films now (not much of a fan), but I'm sure there's a market for his films much more than some of the other titles......
hope that helps,
brandon
P.S.
I would second a vote for more specialty releases of old CLASSIC Paramount studio pictures (as well as DANGER: DIABOLIK).
You guys need to be giving your early films the digital treatment before the celluoid is gone. It will all be gone, one day.....

Bonus features for Captain Kronos and the Hammer's The Man Who Could Cheat Death and Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell would really be exciting! Here's another vote for Murder on the Orient Express and If - both films deserving of some sort of special treatment. I also believe some of the Hammer titles would be popular for SE's. On a personal note, I actually screen tested for Bugsy Malone when I was a kid (I live in England - my pop was in the USAF). Alan Parker visited my school (in Buckinghamshire, near where the movie was filmed) and selected a few of us for tests. I made the first cut and was invited to London for a second test. I didn't make the final cut - but what an experience (I was not then, nor am I now, a professional actor). Alan Parker told us a few great stories.

WINGS absolutely.
Not on the list, but I vote for LIL ABNER (1959) as a no-frills catalog title, though in its original Vista Vision glory. It's a superior musical to DARLING LILI--plus it has a Jerry Lewis cameo! :)
In the future, you may also want to consider the Robert Redford film THE GREAT GATSBY (1974), but ONLY if the original music soundtrack is restored. The current version on VHS is an abomination.
Thanks anyway for listening.

Bugsy Malone
All three deserve trailers (not always guaranteed with Paramount) plus commentaries that would be heavy on actor participation since the directors are deceased (Richard Brooks for L4MG and Colin Higgins for FP) or Alan Parker.
As for who should be on those commentaries, Diane Keaton, Richard Gere and William Atherton simply have to be on LFMG. Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn are generally great together (still can't forget the first Chevy Chase show on Fox) and are needed for FP and it should be hilarious to hear Jodie Foster and Scott Baio compare careers on the B.Malone track. Interactive maps of New York (L4MG) and San Francisco (FP) would also be a big plus.

My votes are:
Murder On the Orient Express I'm not sure but I think an original theatrical featurette exist for this film. This might be held in the archives of Paramount or Studio Canal. Perhaps the disc could also include a text history on Hercule Poirot and a biography of Agatha Christie.
Captain Kronos-Vampire Hunter A commentary could be recorded with Stars Caroline Munro and John Cater: and Writer, Producer and Director Brian Clemens. The track could be moderated by British journalist, writer, and broadcaster Jonathan Sothcott. He has produced documentaries and recorded a number of commentaries for upcoming Hammer films from MGM and Anchor Bay. He can be reached here (business@jonathansothcott.co.uk)
The disc could also include a poster and still gallery (Jonathan has a large collection of these) and maybe radio spots. The DVD could also be billed as a 30th anniversary Special Edition since it was released in England in 1973.
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell This could feature a commentary with Star Shane Briant again moderated by Jonathan Sothcott. The film should also be presented in it's original 99 minute version. I'm sure an uncut print exist in Hammer's vault.

I'd have to go with "Murder on the Orient Express"
I understand that you have limited resources and frankly I'm glad it won't be a 2-DVD set---a lot of the time that just seems like overpackaging. A reunion with the cast would definately be something interesting, maybe collective interivews or commentary tracks. You could try some type of murder mystery game, along the lines of what they're doing with the new "Memento." Although be careful---that sort of thing can get distracting if it isn't done right.
Now that I have your attention, how about a special edition DVD for "The Hunt for Red October" or "Face/Off?"

Dear Mr. Blythe,
Thank you for taking the time and care to communicate with DVD collectors through dvdtalk. Thank you also for the mix of popular, cult and classics in the 11 titles on topic. I appreciate
this range of titles very much.
In response to your invitation:
IF would benefit from a film historianīs commentary and careful mastering. The editing is
very precise and losing small pieces of film would be detrimental. This title is for me a premium object for purchase. Buying ratings reflect subjective title attractivity regardless of extras.
THE LADIES MAN would benefit from a directorīs commentary and from the materials cited
above related to Mr. Bogdanovich. A premium purchase object and an excellent way of introducing Jerry Lewis movies to DVD. Off-topic, I would personally appreciate collecting
Mr. Lewis films in double-feature DVDs similar to Fox and MGM product. Reason? There are many. Two-for-one-pricing is a strong argument for buying. THE NUTTY PROFESSOR, HOLLYWOOD OR BUST and ARTISTS AND MODELS are exceptions. Why? They are classics of American film comedy and standouts in the collected works of Mr. Lewis. NUTTY PROFESSOR with a commentary by Lewis, Stella Stevens, and HOLLYWOOD OR BUST and ARTISTS AND MODELS with commentary by Lewis and/or a film historian are premium objects for purchase.
WINGS would benefit from a commentary by a film historian such as Kevin Brownlow. An excellent opportunity to introduce silent Paramount titles to DVD. A premium object for
purchase.
THE DAY OF THE LOCUST woud benefit from directorīs commentary and a literature historianīs commentary. A prime purchase.
DARLING LILI would benefit from original cut seamlessly branched with directorīs cut, plus a directorīs and Julie Andrews commentary. A prime purchase.
CAPTAIN KRONOS with director and screenwriter commentary would be a semi-premium buying object.
MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS would benefit from a directorīs commentary addressing items such as adapting Agatha Christie and directing an all-star cast. A semi-premium buying object.
Off-topic I support releases of these premium objects for purchase:
FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET
BLOOD AND ROSES ties in excellently with the general interest in Hammer/AIP titles
DANGER DIABOLIK - excellent tie-in with Austin Powers (pop art aspect; film clips used in recent rock video, sorry I forget the song artistīs name)
THE TENANT - director commentary
THE CONFORMIST - director and cameraman commentary
TRADING PLACES - director commentary, new documentary, deleted scenes
Objects for 2-DVD editions:
1900 - original cut, new documentary, director and cameraman commentary
REDS - new documentary, director and cameraman commentary
I support OAR and original production featurettes on all releases.
Yours faithfully,
Stefan Andersson

Murder on the Orient Express, Foul Play, Wings.
These 3 should all have an SE treatment. The first 2 would need 16 x 9 treatment.
Foul Play could have a commentary with the stars, since they are not to busy these days.
Orient Express has a slew of things that can be done with it. I hope it is done right.
Wings might have a film historian do a comentary, etc...
Off topic.
I talked to A. C. Lyles during dinner after the Time Machine (original) event in Omaha last year.
I asked that he pass along that there is a large following of the 60's series COMBAT!
The news Starz Encore Licenses From Paramount Classic Series Combat once again after a couple years on hiatus was well recieved by COMBAT! fandom.
COMBAT! was never on home video in the U.S. except for 6 EP episodes on VHS. COMBAT! also has a following in Japan. Several episodes made it to Laser Disk there.
Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/combatfan/?yguid=99257770 to get an idea of the following this show has.
There have even been several COMBAT! conventions with the stars to date.
COMBAT! on VHS and DVD would be a money maker.
Thank you for the chance to bring this to Paramount's attention.

Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter and the Hammers
Murder on the Orient Express
Mr. Gore
05-11-02, 11:17 AM
First and foremost, here are my top three choices:
If.... is a brilliant allegory, one of the absolute best films of its kind.
The Day of the Locust is an important adaptation of Nathanael West's landmark novel.
The Geisha Boy and other classic Jerry Lewis films deserve special treatment.
Also, any Hammer Film releases are well worth bonuses, although I personally am not too interested in Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter.
By the way Mr. Blythe, Paramount is my favorite studio (Star Trek, hint, hint) and I have always appreciated your presence and participation on this forum. As my collection grows, I find that I am far less interested in barebones discs. As it may be worth buying a DVD for the movie alone, the inclusion of bonus materials in the primary incentive for me to purchase any title.

Of the given list, I'd suggest that a Special Edition DVD is long overdue for:
Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter
Hammer Films appear to be gaining in popularity once again, as now both MGM (The Hound of the Baskervilles) and Warners (The Mummy) have followed Anchor Bay (Too many Hammer titles to list here) in delivering available titles to DVD. Add to that the popularity of the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer which carries the same theme as Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter and I'd say that Paramount could do fairly well with the title.
Just this Hammer fan's two bits worth...
Cheers!

I'd love to see both Hammer's CAPTAIN KRONOS and FRANKENSTEIN & THE MONSTER FROM HELL on DVD - especially with commentary tracks from the talent involved.
Re: KRONOS - Horst Janson, Caroline Munro, Brian Clemmens, and John Carson are still with us, and would make for a very exciting discussion panel.
Re: MONSTER FROM HELL - Shane Briant, Madeline Smith and producer Roy Skeggs would make another very interesting panel.
And please have a moderator for any commentary (to keep the chat focused and relevant).
Hopefully moderated by a respected hammer historian (say, Jonathan Sothcott or Marcus Hearn).

Hi Mr. Blythe,
They're all terrific films but I'd go with Captain Kronos and the other titles in the Paramount Hammer collection, especially Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. They're excellent genre films that deserve that something extra.
The Jerry Lewis titles would come in a close second--Lewis commentaries would be fantastic!
And a Sidney Lumet commentary on Murder in the Orient Express would be a blast as well.
By the way, a huge thank you for Four Flies on Grey Velvet. I can't wait. Now if only the great Danger: Diabolik were to show its gorgeous face... it would make a fine tie-in to Austin Powers, yes?

My votes for special features treatment:
Murder On The Orient Express
Looking For Mr. Goodbar
Day Of The Locust
skywalker8
05-11-02, 06:58 PM
My suggestions in order of importance:
1. Bugsy Malone! I was in a stage version of this once, and the film is also great. Audio commentary by Alan Parker and Scott Baio PLEASE!!! Other special features would be nice, but a commentary from those two would be simply amazing!
2. Foul Play! This would work terrific as a little tribute to Dudley Moore and Burgess Meredith. How about an audio commentary reunion from Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase?? Goldie's life-partner Kurt Russel is a big fan of these, and Chevy Chase just did his first audio commentary for European Vacation.
3. Stayin Alive, with participation from director Sylvester Stallone. Perhaps a short interview with Travolta can be recorded at the same time as Sat. Night Fever.
Before I go on, I must tell you my theory about audio commentaries. Bare-bones releases are easy to turn into 'definitive editions' simply by adding a commentary. When people see that there is a commentary listed on the disc, they know that they've probably got the final version of it, and that there won't be an update in a few years. Short documentaries are nice, but they're more timeconsuming and expensive. Just do commentaries! Warners has caught on to this if you read their latest announcements (i.e. Wolfen, Swarm, Gremlins). Another thing: It's always nice to see a picture of the commentary recording session. Anchor Bay has done this with some. It's very simple and you can just put the picture in a gallery or on the commentary menu.
4. Wings - with photo gallery and historian commentary. This is a good classic film, but it's not a terrific film. Historian commentary is invaluable!
5. If - It would be amazing if the 1933 short film Zero de Conduite were on the disc as well. If... was based on this wonderful film by Jean Vigo. Maybe commentary by Malcolm McDowell and a historian on zero de conduite.
Finally, PLEASE get Jerry Lewis involved in his films on DVD.

A vote for Murder on the Orient Express
Although there's tons of movie I wish I could vote for, I find Paramount using this forum very amazing, hope to see more of this.
In all cases, just want to say.
Original Aspect Ratio on all dvds. Don't waste time on pan and scan.

WINGS -- with trailer and footage of the original Oscar ceremony, if these things exist, but most importantly, the DELTED AIR RAID SEQUENCE, which wound up in another Paramount picture. From Internet Movie Database, regarding Wings:
A scene of an aerial raid on a German troop train was filmed but not used. It later turned up as part of THE LEGION OF THE CONDEMNED (1928).

The one's I'm most interested in seeing with special features would be.
1. Capt. Kronos (and all other Hammer)
2. Murder on the Orient Express
3. If
Paramount has usually done a good job with the transfers, but has usually done been weak in the areas of extras and pricing. I understand extras add to the total cost, but more and more DVD's seem to be coming out fully loaded and in the 15-20 MRSP range. Barebones and 30 just doesn't work for me. At a minimum it needs to be OAR, carefully mastered audio and video and anamorphic (if the ratio permits). I prefer commentaries (especially with the screen writer & director) and any deleted sceens, a featurette is always nice but definitely third in my opinion.
Overall this is a nice list of movies.

Thank you for taking the time to get consumer input into what titles you give extra treatment to. "Captain Kronos" and all the Hammer titles you have would be wonderful next year. And also, "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" will be a great title...I have the first two titles of that Dario Argento trilogy ("Bird with the Crystal Plumage" and "Cat O' Nine Tails").
Finally, "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" could be something with lots of added features but the Hammer titles are a must, in my opinion. Thanks again, Martin, for allowing us to let you know what we want in our DVDs.

However, let me add that I don't think its necessary to have a 2nd disc every time a "special edition" DVD is released. Many titles have truly "special" editions with only one disc -- MGM's great James Bond series, for one, or the Austin Powers discs. Given the capacity of a DVD, a second disc often seems like a waste, or even a gimmick to make the consumer think he/she is getting a better deal ("a two-disc set for the price of one!"). With few exceptions, the 2nd disc doesn't seem necessary.
PS The specs on Paramount's Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan look good.

Just based on that Paramount list I would have to say don't waste time or money on bonus features for these movies. Just give it a widescreen release and use that Paramount money to spend on SAT. NITE FEVER, FLASHDANCE, GREASE, etc. bonus features. Thanks for asking!

A DVD of the Jerry Lewis THE LADIES MAN should definitely incorporate some of the outtakes which exist and have been included on recent Lewis documentaries. And what about a director's commentary by Lewis, if he would be willing? I was disappointed that your NUTTY PROFESSOR DVD was missing such extras.
As far as other possible DVD releases are concerning, when we we be seeing Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST?

Wings!
I would allocate some funds to restoring this film as much as possible. Next I would add a commentary from a film historian/expert: I think it is important to try to explain the importance of silent films (visual story-telling) and the limits of technology of the time to modern audiences. It might even be interesting to commission a new score. I would agree that the deleted footage mentioned earlier should be included as an extra feature.

For maximum impact, I'll vote for only one from the current list... Lindsay Anderson's "If". (Although please take the praise for "O Lucky Man" below as a serious request that it be added to the line-up and given the most special possible treatment.)
"If" is a brilliant film, by a brilliant director. It was the first of three films very loosely related by Malcolm McDowell's characters: "If", "O Lucky Man", and "Britannia Hospital". "If" really set the tone and the bar for over-the-top, counter-culture, youth-revolution films. It deserves proper treatment for its deservedly elevated place in film history.
"O Lucky Man" may be the best film ever made. It's a remarkably wide-ranging odyssey that makes even Odysseus seem like a homebody. It is wonderfully, deeply satirical and insightful at the same time, with the greatest fates-driven, every-man character ever portrayed on page, stage, or screen. It has one of the greatest casts ever assembled for a British (or any other) film, and an absolutely brilliant score by Alan Price. Malcolm McDowell was perfect, and I've been in love with Helen Mirren ever since. It is one of the few films I've returned to see in the theater multiple times during its first run. In fact, despite its three hour length, I sat through it twice in a row on one of those return viewings. I have purchased "O Lucky Man" on videocassette and laserdisc, and will happily purchase it again when it is finally released on DVD.
I haven't seen "Britannia Hospital" in a long while, though I've just ordered it and intend to watch it soon. My memory says it was the weakest of the three films, but, oddly, is the only one out on DVD.

Of the titles listed, "Foul Play" is the one I've been waiting for and will buy almost without question. My wife was just in a local production of The Mikado, and whenever I hear the opening notes of that Gilbert and Sullivan show, I think of Dudley Moore and "Foul Play."

Murder on the Orient Express needs a Special Edition. It is the one film on this list that i feel has both the impact as a great film and the possibilty to be a very good SE, although most of these do merit consideration.
Foul Play could be fun in an SE, but not quite the same necessity.
Also, to repeat what a few others have said, I would love to see Major League on DVD. It is one that I have been waiting for, and as a retailer, I can say with confidence that there would be a lot opf interest in this as well.

My top Three:
1. Murder on the Orient Express - Definitely include some featurettes on Agatha Christie, as well as the life and times of Hercule Poirot. It'd be interesting to have some info on the real-life Orient Express as well. Deleted scenes, outtakes, and whatever else you can get your hands on. Pack this one to the hilt. I can't wait.
2. Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter - One of my professors this semester is doing his doctorate dissertation on gothic horror films, and has been asking me if this film is available. I'll be able to tell him good news now, that it'll be released next year. :) As with the Hammer films that have been released by Anchor Bay and the two upcoming discs by Warner Bros. please pack this one with great extras. As with Anchor Bay's Hammer discs, also please release this one Uncut. If you're gonna do a Special Edition catered toward horror fans, might as well do it right.
3. Foul Play - Big-time guilty pleasure of mine. Love Chevy Chase. It'd be great to hear a commentary with Chase and Goldie Hawn, as well as Chevy behind the scenes, and maybe some deleted scenes and outtakes. It'd also be touching if you could include a "Tribute to Dudley Moore" featurette on this disc as well. Make this Special Edition disc happen, please!
Thanks for asking us for our suggestions! :)

Murder on the Orient Express, definitely!!
In particular, what I'd like to see on this disc is a commentary or docu by a scholar/expert on Agatha Christie, or some other notable expert on the mystery genre. I'm sure there's a lot someone like that could add to my experience of the story, and the film. Special features that focus on the making of the film are great, but this type of subject-matter expert commentary can be very enlightening, as well.
Thanks!

05-13-02, 09:55 AM
Captain Kronos and the Hammer Films are my first choice.
Foul Play is my second (mmmmmm, Goldie Hawn).
Also, PLEASE do not release movie only versions of films, unless you're going to be selling them at a MSRP of $9.99 at Walmart.
You're ears must have been burning when you released Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan last year.... I had just seen the DVD box sets that MGM had been releasing for the James Bond Films and saw what DVD's SHOULD look like. At the same time I get in the Wrath of Khan. Mediocre soft picture, mediocre sound. A BAD painting of Khan as your "menu". Your "extra" involved "Chapter Selection".... whoopee. This dreck gives you a bad name. It seems like you are taking advantage and slapping ANYTHING together with Star Trek on it and watching the trekkers/trekkies snap it up. You redeemed yourself with ST:TMP last year, but this should be the FIRST DVD you release. Movie only versions should only be released two years later when you are trying to lure the WalMart crowd and the movie has long since left rotation on the PayTV channels (ie. what Fox is doing with Independence Day recently).
I buy 120 DVD's a year and I have been drifting away from the Paramount titles due to the "weak" offerings in the special editions department. If Anchor Bay can come up with extras, music videos, DTS-ES discrete sound, AND commentary, why can't a company with Paramount's resources do the same?
And if money is the issue, throw a big check at Spielberg and Lucas and get them to FINALLY release the Raiders of the Lost Ark trilogy in a definitive Special Edition. You'll need shovels to count all the cash that will generate.
Unfortunately, everyone has been spoiling us with these amazing special editions and we've come to expect them now.
I apologize for the tone of this rant, but I have been frustrated with the studios when they treat us as idiots. Give us a quality product and we will beat a path to your door. Don't give us one, and you'll be making excuses to the stockholders about a "down economy" or a mismanaged "marketing campaign" affecting demand for your product. We will never support VOD or another DivX on any significant level as we want to own a copy of a movie that doesn't have a meter attached like a taxicab. Go ask Circuit City about their DivX bill if you need further evidence.
But as a "cleansing sorbet" for this longwinded speech, thank you for soliciting our opinions. We may be tough out here in internet-land, but when you do it right we'll tell thousands of people. Hope to hear from you again soon.

Hello,
As an English professor who uses movies in the classroom, I strongly urge you to release a nice letterboxed edition of "Day of the Locust." Nathaniel West is one of the most important writers of American 20th Century fiction and has had a profound influence on current authors, especially J. G. Ballard. Paramount has made several excellent films of classic American novels, especially "The Last Tycoon," "Isands in the Stream," and "The Great Gatsby." PLEASE release these on DVD in 2003! High schools and colleges would all purchase these, esp. if they had some special features for use in the classroom. Also, what about "HUD" and "Once Upon A Time In the West?"
Thanks!

Captain Kronos was the most unusual, and best, film in the history of Hammer Films. There are few better examples of the true effectiveness of 70s British Horror. I can think of no film more worthy of Special Edition treatment from this genre.

One of my fondest memories were of watching Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter at the local cinema. One of the best hammer "mod" films and would make a great special edition.

Foul Play is a true classic and deserves to be given the special edition treatment. Why, you ask? Well for starters it was the movie that proved Chevy Chase could act. Plus it featured a not so well known Dudley Moore in a classic supporting part. Goldie Hawn's best comedic performance and let's not forget one helluva performance from Burgess Meredith and last but not least a great cameo by Billy Bart. What more do you want? How about an original Opera created just for the movie. That's right, the finale with the japenese opera was created just for the movie. I would really like to hear what Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn have to say about a movie that really helped both of their careers and definately is now considered a classic. Maybe a commentary from Chase and Hawn or how about a retrospective documentary. Well there is a lot of history to this film and a lot of really juicy tidbits to be found. This Title is a no Brainer.
Hey Paramount where are Urban Cowboy and My Grease Special Editions C'mon guys you really need to get on the ball.

I would love to see Wings finally receive a legitimate release! This is the first picture to win the best picture Oscar, and a cinematic classic. I can't believe it hasn't been released yet. It's been my experience that horror and cult fans are the most die-hard when it comes to extra features on discs. Straight-ahead dramas don't generally get people so involved, and/or desiring to go a lot "deeper" into them.
I would say therefore that the deluxe treatment should go to:
- CAPTAIN KRONOS (please please please) + other Hammer (esp. FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL)
- FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET (it seemed to be sort of in your list -- so please please please please solidify this release, and be SURE it's OAR, 16x9 ehn., and both English and original Italian audio tracks)
- IF...
- DAY OF THE LOCUST
- DON'T LOOK NOW (whoops! Was that not on the list?? I must be confusing it with the gorgeous, uncut 16x9 enhanced version, with extras, that's already out in Europe. Should be easy to get this one out domestically).
And please remember, for all releases:
- No full screen or Pan and Scan!!!!
- 16x9 Enhanced for anything not Academy ratio
- Minimize edge enhancement!!!
Thank you for this opportunity to speak up.

My vote is for Bugsy Malone. OAR. Commentary by Alan Parker, Jodie Foster, Chachi, and Paul Williams recorded with all four watching the movie together, not edited from separate interviews. If there's deleted songs or voice tests -- maybe they considered using the actors' singing voices before going with adults -- that would be cool. Promotional making of from 1976 would be more interesting (and cheaper for Paramount) than a new featurette. 5.1 remix.
A good historical commentary on Wings would be great.
If Chevy Chase would have to get paid for a commentary for Foul Play, then save your money. He won't add any value.

Hi Martin,
Out of your list of eleven none of them really interest me. However, it can't be expensive to put a theatrical trailer and an audio commentary onto a DVD and the people that like the movies that get this minimal treatment will appreciate it.
Speaking of theatrical trailers, not having the trailer included has stopped me from buying quite a few Paramount titles.
Thanks for the quality OAR transfers -- please don't let the high standard slide.

Bugsy Malone would be the other on the list that I'd be interested in. A Scott Baio and Alan Parker commentary, perhaps? Of course, I'd love a Jodie Foster commentary, but that's just wishful thinking.

I vote for Foul Play, Murder on the Orient Express and Bugsy Malone. Foul Play, especially, since it was filmed in my hometown and featured Chevy Chase in his first leading role. I recall seeing many cute trailers for this film and I'd love to see them all included. A commentary would be nice. I think Foul Play is an important film to the film resume of Collin Higgins and I'd love to see some sort of acknowledgement to his work in the comedy (and comedy/thriller) genre in the '70's. A Goldie Hawn commentary or interview would be ideal, also.

Hello Martin,
Thanks for asking!
Jerry Lewis movies deserve SE treatment. JL commentary, production photos, screen tests would be welcome. Double features are a great idea (Tashlin directed and Lewis directed pairings would work nicely).
Re: Hammer & Argento- fans are used to SE treatment by now and you do want to keep up with your competition, don't you? A special "extra" request: lurid and sensational cover art, reversable alternate covers are fun too.
IF is a fascinating film and deserves special treatment.

Bugsy Malone would be great, with a retrospective documentary a la Stand By Me. And an Alan Parker commentary, too?
If would be an interesting case.
Wings, just because it's historically significant.
Thanks for listening!

IF...,truly deserves a commentary at the very least....and the original uncut originaly X rated version.
Foul Play...is a great title as well. As long as it's in WS ,i'm happy, but a commentary would be great.

Murder on the Orient Express
Since this is a story that takes place on an interesting set and everyone loves trains the dvd could take advantage of a great opportunity to let the viewer further explore that set.
The book includes a diagram of a passenger car. But the dvd could do so much better with a virtual rendition of the car or at least part of one. Maybe as part of the menu theme or as a "virtual tour" extra feature.
Also you might consider including a documentary on the real Orient Express as well as a biography of Agatha Christie.
Death on the Nile is also one of my favorite movies and I thought Anchor Bay missed a similar opportunity to create a virtual Karnak steamship for dvd viewers to explore.
further suggestions for MOTOE artwork available upon request :)
btw, my dvd preferences are:
1. OAR
2. Picture Quality and Sound Quality (and for older movies I'd prefer a clean original mono soundtrack over a mediocre created-for-dvd 5.1 soundtrack if that's the choice. )
3. Goofs, flubbed lines
4. Trailers for other movies as well as the featured movie
5. Cast & Crew Interviews
- thx for the opportunity to contribute my .02

Just a note and a reminder.
Any posts I remove from this thread are being merged with the Other Parmount Title Request thread: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=207288
Please don't ask for information about other titles in this thread, as it can take this thread off topic. Especially with the more popular titles, Parmount knows the public wants them, and they will put them out as soon as it is legally possible, and fits in with their business plans.

In 1977, Bugsy Malone was all the rage in my school. Everyone I knew had the record, sang the songs, fired imaginary creme-filled machine guns at our teachers. Bugsy Malone was the undisputed king of fourth grade.
Then Star Wars came along and blew him off the map. No one talked about Bugsy Malone anymore.
But some of us still remember. Some of us can't get Paul Williams' voice out of our heads. Some of us know every word to "Fat Sam's Grand Slam Speakeasy." Some of us never could buy Scott Baio as "Chachi." (He's Bugsy, dammit.) Some of us still think of Jodie Foster as Talullah. Some of us are in serious need of help. So help us out. Give us a jam-packed DVD, and watch Bugsy Malone reclaim his throne (now that we're all tired of Star Wars).

I'd like to throw in my vote for:
Murder on the Orient Express
Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter
Any other Hammer films you've got stashed away
And, of course, Four Flies On Grey Velvet
