I would wait on plasma. The Technology is changing too much too fast right now...and it really still isn't perfected yet.
$20,000 Would get you a nice projector but then you need to factor in a screen, video signal processors, etc and remodeling your home...suddenly that $20,000 doesn't seem so much now.
Personally I would go with a 60" DLP TV and a top of the line DVD player...and invest the rest of the money.

If you're going plasma, the best choice right now is the Fujitsu 61", which unfortunately is $24k. You can get the NEC 61" that it's based on for about $14k, but quality wise, it's really not the same. Also, you still have to deal with all of the burn in issues that plasmas still have.
Personally, I'd go with a JVC G150CLz projector and a large Stewart Firehawk screen if you have relatively good ambient lighting control. If you have no ambient lighting control, I'd wait until plasmas got better.

Projector & plasma technology and pricing are both rapidly inmproving. 42" Pannie plasmas and decent DLP projectors are under $6K at B&M stores. You can also take the middle round of spending a lower amount now and then upgrading in the future.
In the end however, it's all about the lighting situation and your viewing habits.

As much as plasma and DLP formats are 'improving', they will never touch the performance of a FP set-up with a quality projector with 9" CRT's. More money? Perhaps, but If you are looking for quality, there is no comparison. Bang for the buck? Then maye you should look into plasma or DLP.
Of course...YMMV.

I echo DVD_O_Rama. There is a definite quality edge with a good CRT front projector set-up. If you want to spend a bit more on processors and accompanying hardware check with some of your local pro audio-visual/systems integrator houses (especially those with rental departments) and see if they have anything used to sell. You can have some luck poking around the internet as well.

There are DLP projectors that do 1280x1024, but they're expensive.
Screens cost as low as a hundred dollars, and go up to 5 digits. It just matters if it's electric, what model, what company, what material, and what size. The $5000 screens tend to be very nice.

Given I'm more concerned about space at the moment I would go with a 50" plasma or the 60" Grand Wega from Sony. Both are well under 20K and would leave me with $$ to spend on another upgrade, or perhaps buying both.

No, Original Desmond. don't do the PLASMA thing. Spend the money on a DLP projector; RUNCO makes one of the best. This is what home theatre is all about. Having seen AOTC in DLP and having a DLP projector at home, there is no other way that I would even consider watching movies.
I have yet to be impressed with any PLASMA screen out there. Their black levels simply SUCK! I dare anyone to put PLASMA head to head with a DLP projector. Why would anyone spend money on PLASMA when DLP is clearly a better image.
Sure you can hang a PLASMA screen on your wall. So what.
I would rather hang a beautiful painting or even a picture there.
Hell, at least it would be clear and well defined.
Check them both out and then you decide.

the major knock on Runco is that they are overpriced. yes, they make an excellent product...but you can find a comparable projector for thousands less.
