Short of seeing Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA4) in stores anytime soon, what games are in the same family as GTA3? I've heard "State of Emergency" is close. Is that accurate? Are there any others?

What exactly is it about GTA3 you like? The driving, missions, beating people up? As far as all those elements, not really anything. GTA3: Vice City should be out this year though.
Oh, and, as far as I know, SoE disappointed a LOT of people looking for the next GTA3.

if you are looking for the driving, i saw a commercial earlier today for a game called Test Drive.... at first I thought it was a commercial for the next GTA but it wasn't. other than the commercial I know nothing about it.

Nothing else is close. That's why people went so nuts over GTA. If you haven't played Final Fantasy X, it's not like GTA, but it's a good, long game. You might also like Twisted Metal, and it's now $19.99

State of Emergency is really nothing like GTA3. GTA3 is deep, involved, and layered. SoE is more of an arcade bashing. I like SoE, though I seem to be in the minority. But short of killing people, it's nothing like GTA3. Think of GTA3 as a role-playing game and SoE as a quarter-feeding arcade type of game.

I don't think anything comes close in terms of overall quality. Just try to hold out a little longer for GTA: Vice City. :D

It isn't out yet, but there is a game supposedly coming out later this year called The Getaway. It looks like it will be "GTA3 Goes to London".:)
