Official DVD Replacement Cover & Case Thread - Part 5
I thought the old thread was getting really big (10 pages) so here is a fresh, new thread.

Any cover that is under 150dpi is not really fit for quality printing. So please use you own discretion before printing out any cover!

Feel free to post cover requests and links to other covers in this thread.

Thanks for taking the time to post this, but I added it to the first post in this thread per your original suggestion, as I think that will make it easier to see for people new to the threads.

I'm also archiving parts 2 - 4 so they don't get deleted.

Finally, I emailed RMan360, and he said he no longer has time to maintain the thread, and he'd be happy to see someone else take it over, so feel free to volunteer. You can restart the thread and I'll copy in any cover requests to keep everything neat.

Of course, JJE-187, if you would like to maintain it, you are more than welcome to do so.

habers. I don't think you should be asking for covers for bootlegs in this forum. AOTC is not avaiable legally anywhere so there is no need for a DVD cover.

If it's ok with the mods it's ok with me. I am aware of the Star Wars & Indiana Jones covers (i have them myself) but I copied my widescreen VHS to VCD and AOTC isn't available on any format yet so I wasn't sure if the mods would allow it to stay

I am having the worst time searching for a cover scan of "O"- Deluxe Edition in Region 1. The biggest problem is that the cover art search engines are not set up to search effectively for just the letter "O" (too many results). I did find a scan of a foreign version of "O", but I really could use help locating the U.S. "O". Any pointers to a site with this cover would be appreciated, or maybe someone could scan their cover for me? I got a previewed disc from Blockbuster in a generic BB rental cover.

Thanks for any help!

Okay, just got Legend today, and I'm on the bandwagon for a keepcase insert. And yes, I did just download the art from dvdcoverart.com. But two things,

1. Is there any way to print keepcase covers at 100% on letter sized paper with a DeskJet 920c?

2. Anyone out there bold enough to dismantle their case and do a direct port of the back, perhaps with white text on a black background? And could we get the Scott signature on the front? Ooh, and what about that "I Am Darkness" text from the poster? Or would that be just about too much? Thoughts?

Again, glad to see somebody (in this case, StoneCold (freeserve@stonecoldalex.fsnet.co.uk) ) put something out so quickly. But as we've all seen on DVDcoverart.com, one cover does not necessarily have to be the final word.

Keep 'em coming,

CS

P.S. let's not forget Real Genius or Innerspace, either!

Thanks :D I actually replaced the Book of the Dead cover with my new on, because its kinda useless to have a copy of the book as a cover when you have the real thing sitting on a shelf :) Its also nicer to have all 3 evil dead movies sitting next to each other with corresponding spines ;)

So I picked up a double-disc case (a la Gladiator) to replace the ultimate case for Legend. Figured out how to print StoneCold's cover on letter paper without clipping (though even at 100%, it wasn't quite wide enough to fill the cover, most curious), and when I went to put the booklet in the clips...

Yep, the damn booklet's too wide! I even tried slipping it into the sleeve, so the US poster art (without titles, but it was just for kicks) would be the cover. In the process, I ended up bending the art and making a mess.

Long story short, anyone have an insert with Scott's message and disc contents sized for a keepcase?

And again, might there be an alternative cover design altogether?

Back on my meds,

CS

the cover is the correct size - whatever program you used to print compressed it slightly. be sure you don't have anything like 'scale to fit' selected...

If it is the one where the Japanese characters are on the top, it'd be interested in a scan of it. 300 dpi would be fine. Can I drop you an email with my other email address, since my Yahoo one is limited with file attachment size?

i have the VHS NTSC cover to Song of the South, from a release at least 7 years ago. Japanese text front and back, but similar "The Classic" black diamond design of the other older Disney VHS titles.

i'd be happy to scan it and send to Matt to post foe downloading.

Sebastian: Personally, the spine should have some color other than green, IMO. I wasn't too thrilled with the front cover of New Line's version; I think yours is better. The back of New Line's was pretty decent, showing the menu screen too. I think their version edges yours simply for that reason (although I prefer your color scheme.

BTW, your Hellraiser cover is great! Also, although I'm not a fan of Idle Hands, that cover is leaps and bounds above the crap that the studio designed. Well done!

Looks pretty darn good Sebastian. It's definitely better than NL cover. The only thing I would recommend adjusting is the green picture tone of Kyle McLaughlin on the spine and maybe change the tagline on the front cover to either white or black lettering, for it's a little difficult to make out. Nice job

Thanks for the comments. I think IŽll leave the spine like it is, another color would IMHO break the color schemeof the whole cover. The only think I donÄt quit understand is why you like it when they have a picture of the menu on the cover... it's imho pretty useless...

I had it in white first, but it was too much of an eye catcher and diverted too much attention from the main motive... but I guess thats just a normal matter of taste :D

Sebastian: As for the menu screen on the back, call me weird. :) From a marketing standpoint, the menu makes sense. These alternative covers are supposed to replace the standard studio covers, so they are for fans of the movies (or haters of snappers). When I designed a cover for an issue of Inside DVD with the old black & white Little Shop of Horrors, I included a pic of the original Inside DVD coverslip (had Freddy Krueger on it) as a...marketing gimmick, I guess.

Hellbound? Cover's pretty good and works well, but I *really* like the Hellraiser one. :)

As for Idle Hands, based on your cover, I'm thinking about renting the flick. I saw it in the theater and was pretty disappointed. However, maybe I should give it another chance. After all, if I like it, I'll buy it and then I can use your amazing cover. (I'm serious too. Call me weird.)

THe problem might be, that I updated to winrar 3.0 wich might cause you these problems. Try unpacking it with winrar 3.0 and you should have no problems...

Jesse E. I only own Hollow Man ond never thought of making a custom cover for it, but now that you mention it, the cover really isn't good looking compared to the poster art... but I have Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon on top of my list now, so you will see a cover for this dvd next...

Kiss of the Dragon and A.I. are both good canidates for custom covers but I like to own the dvds I make covers for, and since IŽam totally out of any spare money to spend on dvds this might take a pretty long while :(

Hey RMan360

Do you have any promotional flyers of the Sopranos? Looking for any and all seasons.

Rogue588
06-10-02, 07:15 PM
OK guys.

Try not to laugh. But, for the past hour or so, i've been trying to create a cover for Willy Wonka. Wait. Create isn't the right word. I scanned the cover and i'm trying to assemble it following mdX's advice on www.dvdcoverart.com.

Now...

I have two problems. One i actually solved . And the other is just plain baffling me.

Lemme start with the hard one.

I'm basically all done with the cover but i'm stuck at the point where mdX says "[b]Now, down convert the image to 300dpi*, and save. You are now ready to print your new cover." I really can't figure out how to down convert the file. Right now it's 19.9m. But, most covers i've seen are around 3-5m. What am i doing wrong?

The other problem is pasting the front/back cover onto a separate document. For example. mdX says to single out the front/back cover. resize it, then paste it onto your template. Well, i don't have a template for a DVD cover so i just create a document with the insert measurements. Now when i paste any particular item into the document/template, it's way too big and doesn't fit.

I know it's probably me, but i'm at wits end about the down converting.

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, i suppose this would help: I'm using Adobe PhotoShop. :)

BrianPM
06-11-02, 12:05 AM
Rogue588,

Now that DVDCoverArt.com is back up you can get some nice templates from the help page. Note that these are at 300DPI, so you need to downconvert first before you paste your pieces in.

To down convert, this is how I do it in Photoshop Elements, YMMV since I know Elements has a simplified interface versus Photoshop.

- Image -> Resize -> Image Size
- Change the resolution box to 300 DPI. Leave everything else in the dialog alone. The pixel count should adjust automatically.

Sometimes it seems like I've had to Select All before this will work, maybe in it's a bug in Elements.

Everyone,

I can't seem to get this color/contrast/brightness correction thing right. I put together a cover for Lost in Space, but my silvers all ended up very, very blue. Then I decided to try Cannonball Run - it's much simpler, with a white background and not much art on the cover. No matter what adjustments I make the maroon title on the front is more of a muddy red, and I can't seem to get Burt's face out of the shadows on the back cover.

All of the covers that I've printed out from DVDCoverArt.com seem to have accurate colors, so I know I'm doing something wrong. Maybe my Umax Astra 600 scanner is just a piece of junk.

A professional graphic artist I'm not. Any of you pros have some tips for a rookie? :) As mentioned above, I'm using Photoshop Elements.

- Brian

Thanks for the help BrianPm. I finally got it.

Right now, i'm just scanning snappers. One of these days i'll get enough nerve [& time] to try and create my own like Sebastian. :)

These are the first two i've done:

http://members.aol.com/rogue588/willywonka.jpg

One of the best movies ever. And one of my favorites. The re-release cover IMO sucks. I guess that was WB's revenge at being "forced" to release a w i d e s c r e e n version. :)

http://members.aol.com/rogue588/rgc.jpg

Do i really have to say anything about the original cover to this? God, it's amazing that Columbia pays people for crap like that. The new front cover is from the front of the insert.

I've been trying to send 'em to mdX [so he can put 'em up at www.dvdcoverart.com/], but i've been having problems with it. Hopefully, it'll be straightened out soon.

Pretty easy answere, first of I really like the artwork IŽam using right now and second I couldn't find any high quality sources for the poster artworks you mentioned... the landscape one really works pretty well, but without a high res scan of it preferably of a source without any text in it, you will have to live with the one IŽam using right now...

Sebastian you are the man. I have always liked that CTHD artwork ever since I saw those posters on billboards here in NY. It gives the film a mythic quality and reminds me of comic graphic novels.

I haven't forgotten the scans of the BLADE and AUSTIN POWERS 2 screening invites that I promised you. I just have to figure out how I'm going to scan them. I'm new to this so bare with me. I'm dying for a nice BLADE cover with this original poster image to go along with the great cover for the upcoming disc of BLADE II.
