Review Wanted: Breaking the Waves
Looking for some input on this film, and disc. Since its nowhere to be found at the rental chains, it would have to be a blind purchase for me. Can you compare it to any other film(s)? Thanks.

There are two other threads:
need a review of dvd quality of Breaking the waves
and
Review Needed: Breaking the Waves/ Dolores Claiborne
I liked it a lot. It is probably one of the best films of the 90s. Compare it to...I do not know right now. Let me think.

Mr. Plissken just about summed it up. I saw this years ago and was really impressed because it was such an emotionally affecting movie. You can't just watch it and move on with the rest of your day. I can't think of a great comparison either, although I think Dancer in the Dark is somewhat similar because both were so well-acted and seemed to inevitably spiral toward tragedy in ways at once utterly absurd but also absolutely believable.

In no order:
1. Satantango
2. Chungking Express
3. Trois Couleurs: Rouge
4. Breaking the Waves
5. Ashes of Time
6. Eternity and a Day
7. The Wind Will Carry Us
8. Vive L'Amour
9. Charisma
10. Naked
As for comparison, this is easy - Lars von Trier proves that he is the spiritual successor of Carl Theodore Dreyer with this film, which echoes Dreyer's classic films "Ordet" and "The Passion of Joan of Arc" in many ways.
The R1 version of the film is 153 minutes, as opposed to the 159 minutes elsewhere. However, the 153 minute version is listed on IMDB.com as the director's cut.

Before this thread turns into too much of a Lars von Trier love-fest, it should be noted that there are many people (myself included) who find this movie utterly despicable.

Tommy_Harn,
Since you asked to compare it to other films, Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc is probably the best comparison that can be made. (I have yet to see Ordet, but I have that Dreyer box set close to the top of my list of things to watch next.....I have too much stuff lying around I haven't watched yet).
