The Deer Hunter

I would like to know if The Deer Hunter is worth buying, i would like to have it for my collection? I have been reading that the quality of the DVD(video and sound) is not up to Universal's production standards. Any thoughts on this topic would be appreciated.

Very good film, one of the best to come out in the 70s,Walkens makes this film IMO and is a must own,but however I dont know which version to tell you to get,I havnt seen the film in like 5 years and have never seen it on DVD.

I wont give any of the story away but its a semi-war film and is weird and eary, give it a rent at least and see if you like it enough to buy.

Deer Hunter is a great film and even if you decide not to buy it you should at least rent it. It is not to be missed. However the DVD transfer is not very good and the sound is just ok, nothing to write home about. I picked up my DVD copy at Circuit City a while back for $10.99. At that price I wasn't too disappointed with the transfer and it's good enough to hold me until a SE is released.

A great film. Truly great. The cast is extraordinary. DeNiro, Walken, John Savage, Meryl Streep, George Dzundza and the excellent John Cazale in his last role (he was dying of bone cancer during filming . His fiance in real life was Streep btw). Michael Cimino has never done a better job as a director. The scenes prior to the Vietnam sequences are very enjoyable and well put together and the ones afterward are extraordinarily moving at times. The scenes in the VC camp are simply astonishing...there's no other way to put it. Anyone who's only seen Christopher Walken doing his comedy/ black humor bit need to see this movie to appreciate the guy. He's one of the best actors going IMHO.

As to the DVD itself, the transfer is very fine though the extras are meager. For the price it's currently going at, it's a tremendous buy.

The Deer Hunter is a very powerful film, with some sequences that are difficult to watch. It's one of the best films to come out of the late '70's era IMO. While the audio and video are not to the standard they could be, this title can be found for a real bargain at most retail dvd outlets. Definitely worth at least a rental. DeNiro and especially Walken are excellent.

If you haven't seen this before, I'd definitely recommend a rental on this one.

I just watched this for the first time and while I think it's a well made film with a good story to tell, it just doesn't have the ability to grab a person the way it did back when it came out and this kind of gritty, brutal look at life type of film first came out.

What's really sad is that this is such a poorly done DVD. The video itself is more than passable given it's age, but the sound was terrible. Very hard to understand and I had to have the subtitles on during most of the film. Everything sounded all mushed together and raising the volume seemed to just have the effect of making everything sound more garbled and harsh.

The "bonus materials" on this disc consist of what I think is a rerelease trailer (lots of movie review quotes) or at least certainly not the original trailer for the film as it seemed like it's intended audience was expected to be familiar with the film. And also some text based production notes that were very cursory given that the filming was done on real locations in Pennsylvania and Thailand. Cast & Crew notes are available, though I didn't look at that.
