Sony PS2 price cut is official

http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories...865329,00.html
Sony announced late on Monday night that it is lowering the price of its PSOne and PlayStation 2 hardware. Effective immediately, the PlayStation 2 has been slashed in price to $199 from its original launch price of $299. In addition, the PSOne hardware has been cut from its current $99 retail price down to $49.

I know this has been rumored forever, but I am glad that it finally is real. I will try to get a PS2 next payday, but I am sure that alot of people will be trying to get them now.

Yep and I hear Xbox will also be $199
I still can't believe Sony makes the PSone, probably because of its small size and LCD Screen option. i mean, for 150 bucks more you also get a DVD player, and get to play PS2 and PS1 games...,
PSone graphics are so old school, for instance I played Gran Turismo 2 on my friends Playstation..WHoA!!

I hope Gamecube drops to $99, i'll pick one up, til then I love my PS2

wow, I was starting to think that Sony wasn't going to do it. But, I think cutting the price is probably the safer bet for them in many ways.

They even hinted that they may spread this price war into the software. That's a double-edged sword, however, and I wonder if it wouldn't hurt them more than it would hurt MS.

Anyway, this pretty much confirms that the MS price move is a done deal. Sony wouldn't time it this way and be so sudden about their announcement unless they were sure MS was planning to cut the XBox price on May 20th like it has been rumored.

MS going lower?

I would like to see MS drop the price of the Xbox to $149!

That would spice things up quite a bit.

Hehe, it's interesting to read those posts about why Sony is so "shrewd" by not dropping their prices now.

It will happen. Sony was already outselling Microsoft and Nintendo combined. They'll both have to drop prices in order to keep up.

The best part of this deal is that they cut the price on controllers and memory cards as well to $24.99.

$199 , I heard buy.com will follow soon. Too bad I already have it, PS2 is already outselling both companies, but I'm pretty sure they're gonna follow, X box for $150, I'm there. But GC at $150 is also hot>>

It's good that the cut the PS2, did anybody believe the article last week where top executives at Sony said they wouldn't cut the price? Sure it was a stalling tactic but makes Sony look like a bunch of liars and cheats.

duy37 - the reason that Sony still makes the PSOne is because they still sell a lot of them. In Japan, more PSOne's are sold then X-box's. They are still selling good and they still make games for it. It is pure profit, they are making tons of loot.

IC_Freeze - Even if the person who made that statement did know about the price drop, they are not alloud to say anything about it until it is officially announced.

On a side note, I might have to pick up a GC when that price drop is announced. I guess its a good time to pick up that second PS2

Also with MS dropping the price of the X-Box in a few weeks what better way for Sony to respond but to drop the price before they do.
With Sony going online though wont more games need the hard drive to run faster? Yes you could use a memory card but that is only 8 megs. How many people would shell out 299 and then another 99-199 for a hard drive and online adapter?

Does anyone other than me find it funny that buy.com, bestbuy.com, amazon.com, and all of the other sites have already updated their prices, but playstation.com has not?

EDIT: O.K., they've lowered the price now, so it's no longer funny.

I agree, I'd love to be able to get a new PSOne / LCD combo for $100.

Actually the Network adapter is going to be 39.99. No price or time frame for the hard drive though.

Nintendo needs to drop the Gamecube price right now to compete with Sony...oh, and also so I can pick one up.

This is the first time I never owned one of the new systems and waited for a price drop. Feels pretty f'in good for once.

Sony must have figured "strike while the iron is hot". They have the current X-Box incarnation on the ropes, so why not go for the knockout. Microsoft, despite all their self proclaimed marketing savvy, made a critical mistake not beating Sony to the punch.

Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to pick up a PS2 today. I'm going to take care of that soon though.
