Best Buy and new releases

Is it just my local Best Buy or do they not get in any new releases unless it is in their ad? I have gone there the past few Tuesdays and the only new DVDs they get in are only in their ad.

Take today for instance, I wanted Stephen Hawking's Universe, Old Yeller, Waking Life, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and maybe even a few more. A clerk saw me looking around quite frustrated so she asked me if she could help me find anything. I mentioned HGTTG and Old Yeller and she didn't know anything about those. She had a clip board in her arm with a copy of their ad on it and she looked in it and declared they didn't get those in. She didn't even bother looking in the computer. Of course, I could see on the shelf they didn't stock these new titles. But she couldn't tell me anything beyond what was in their ad. And last week, they never got in My First Mister either (and still didn't have it).

"It seems you never get in the new releases." Are you sure they are coming out today? "Oh yes." Well, the studio sometimes changes the release dates on us and we never know when they are coming in. Bull crap. And she told me all they got in today was Jerry Maguire, Ali, and Not Another Teen Movie....their ad items.

I am beginning to lean more and more towards online purchasing. I usually buy about 90% of my DVDs on line but lately I've seen some DVDs I got on line come to Best Buy cheaper, such as Novocaine. So I thought I would try them first for the new releases since they always have good prices on their new discs, but if they only are getting in ad items, what is the bloody point?

My local Best Buy has been notorious for breaking pre street dates, so are they being penalized by not being able to get in all the new releases or does Best Buy just suck at getting new releases and none of their stores get in the smaller titles?

There are some movies that I know I will have to purchase online because BB won't carry them. Mostly idependent or foreign fare. However, I've never had a problem buying new movies on release day at BB.

Whenever I've asked if something was in stock, the employees will check on the computer station that seems to be situated in the movie department. At this point I'm usually told if A. it's in stock, B. it's out of stock, or C. they don't carry it.

I realize the store here isnt yours calhoun, but i will share my insight from this one.

The less "mainstream" a movie is the less likely it is for a Butt Buy to carry it. The reasons why is obvious, they stock stuff that will sell, not stuff that a few people might not.

Another thing is that Best Buy is SLOW at getting anything in that isnt flying off the shelf. When i quit working there in Nov., i had put 4 copies of the "Darkman/Darkman2" two pack in the "devo" (defective) bin (they were loose in the case and had been shaken around). I didnt see another copy at that store till mid-april, and even then it was only one copy.

Sometimes the DVD gods cast good fortune upon you and allow Best Buy to get the particular DVD you are looking for. I have seen some obscure stuff come into this store, but the more obscure it is, the more likely it is to but put out early. So there is a possibility that they did get it but it sold before its actual street date. But if i cant find what i want I usually go to Borders or check the internet.

What bugs me is that your store doesnt have "Old Yeller" but im pretty sure there are at least 3 copies of that crappy soft porn "Erotic Witch Project" rotting away on the shelf.

All of the List price Buys in my area never have new releases until at least a week after the street date. Too bad, they really need something to fill up all the empty space in their stores.

Well, in defense of the employee in question, Waking Life and Old Yeller didn't come out this week. They're both due next week. Also, I'm not surprised at all that they didn't have Stephen Hawking's Universe.

Gee, somebody forgot to tell deep discount dvd about Waking Life...they already shipped mine!

As for Old Yeller, yeah, I see that doesn't come out til next week. On a local radio station they air the listings of all the DVDs that come out that day, and this past Tuesday, for whatever reason, they listed Old Yeller. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered they were wrong. That same radio station also announced Waking Life as coming out this past Tuesday as well.
