I can't speak for 1901 to 1959 with ANY authority but....

.... we're not necessarily talking all-out favourite bands here so looking at the 1960 onwards, if asked about "original" bands, I think I would have to mention Kraftwerk.

And which was the first psychedelic band? First heavy rock? First punk etc. etc.?

Three Day Delay deftly handled all of those questions with the post right above yours.

I don't see how there's any way to name one specific "most original band" out of 100+ years of music. The 20th century saw so many different popular music styles - big band, jazz, blues, country, r&b, rock, hip hop...just to name a few...that cannot even rightly be compared to one another. The two "serious" answers in this thread - Radiohead and Cake(?) - deftly illustrate this point. Winger was the perfect answer, Three Day Delay, although I've gotta admit, I'm partial to Cinderella.

The 1900s-present? You've got to be kidding. Still if I had to pin one down I'd have to go with my old standby....

The Beatles. Almost everything else we listen to these days comes from them somehow.

Seriously - Radiohead? I like them, but come on - they've hardly been pioneers of the art form. Everything they did was done before somehow.

These two did not create rock 'n' roll. They were merely among the first white people to play what had traditionally been a black music.

Elvis and Buddy Holly definitely had an enormous impact on the course of popular music. They were certainly vital artists in the development of rock n' roll and in the development of youth culture in general. That still doesn't mean that they "created" rock music. They just didn't.

black people stopped liking it.
Gonna have to agree with Yancey and Iron Chef about this statement.

I'll go with the obvious answer: The Originals (later known as The New Originals and other names before eventually settling on Spinal Tap)
