I like both kinds of music, country and western!
I'm more of an alt-country fan, as I don't like much of mainstream country radio (Dwight Yoakam is one of the few I enjoy). I do like a lot of the old country artists, like Johnny (the man in black is THE MAN, IMHO), Emmy Lou Harris, etc.
As for new, as I said, my tastes run a little alternative:
Steve Earle
Robert Earl Keen
Lyle Lovett
Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo
etc etc etc

I'm also a pretty big fan of alternative country. I really dislike popular radio country, but alt-country has some of the best music being released today in my opinion.
Some favorites:
Wilco (even though they're far from alt-country nowadays)
Uncle Tupelo
Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams/Caitlin Cary
Old 97's
Slobberbone
Be Good Tanyas
Kasey Chambers
Pine Valley Cosmonauts
I also like traditional country artists:
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson
Patsy Cline
Hank Sr.

I grew up listening to country because my mom did but I mainly listen to rock music now. I do have country stations prog. in my radio though. I am not really into the new style of country. I prefer late 80's and most of the 90's. But this stuff over the past three or so years is just horrible (IMO).

People have pretty much hit on all my alt-country faves:
Ryan Adams / Whiskeytown
Lucinda Williams
Steve Earle (who prefers the label "folk", I think)
Emmylou Harris (but really only her recent stuff)
Johnny Cash
Lyle Lovett
Hank Williams III (live - he does kick ass hillbilly punk rock; on album - he sounds a bit more traditionally "country")
Wilco (but yeah, they're not really "country" anymore)
Shelby Lynne
The Pernice Brothers / Scud Mountain Boys
The Flying Burrito Brothers
Ryan Adams / Whiskeytown
Lucinda Williams

Yes, I like country. I prefer "outlaw country", with singers like Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, David Allen Coe, and Hank Williams, Jr. I also like the alt-country like Robert Earl Keen and Uncle Tupelo.
After that, I like old, late 70's/early 80's country because it's what I grew up on.

I recently replied to another thread here about how I listened to more female artists than male. Nowhere is this more true than in my country music tastes.
Male country singers:
Johnny Cash
Steve Earl
Lonesome Bob
Female country singers:
Allison Moorer
Shelby Lynn
Kasey Chambers
Lucinda Williams
Emmylou Harris
Suzy Bogguss
Dixie Chicks
Patty Loveless
Mary Chapin Carpenter
...and many more...
men with a 'twang' = women with a 'twang' =
