Guys, do you listen to female music acts?

I can honestly say that I have never purchased a musical recording from a female singer or band. There are plenty of female acts that I respect, but not for talent, mostly for longevity.
Come to think of it, there are plenty of male music acts that I don't care for either, but most of the musicians that I would spend money on are male. The only CDs that I have that have females performing on them are some old White Zombie, and Andrea Bocelli with Sarah Brightman.

I do. Recent discs I've bought from female artists...

Be Good Tanyas "Blue Horse"
Caitlin Cary "While You Weren't Looking"
Kasey Chambers "Barricades and Brickwalls
Gillian Welch "Time (The Revelator)"

I love three of the four of these. I really dislike Gillian Welch's disc though. The Be Good Tanyas disc is actually one of my favorite discs right now.

I do own far more albums by male artists though.

Well I listen to mostly hard rock/metal and what not, and the thing I detest the most is bands like Kittie who are in that genre, but are female and have to growl and act all cool. I can't stand it. The only cd's I own that have female performers even are the A perfect Circle Cds and my white zombie cds.

I don't have anything against them, I just haven't found one that actually appeals to me.

I think a good chunk of bands/artists I like have female members/singers:

The Smashing Pumpkins
Bjork
Joni Mitchell
Portishead
Pulp
Talking Heads
Tori Amos
Faye Wong
Bands/artists I like without female members:

System of a Down
Tool
Weezer
The Beatles
Pink Floyd
Sublime
Jeff Buckley
The Chemical Brothers
Radiohead

Well, being a girl, I'm wondering if there are any girls out there that think the same about guys in bands or male artists, seems like it would be impossible, however.

I was wondering about this as well. In my younger days I listened to predominantly rap music, a male dominated genre; the few women that rapped, I hated - it just didn't sound right. I think Lauryn Hill was the only exception.

However, as my musical horizons have widened, I tend to listen to a lot of different stuff. It was a big turning point when I started listening to Trip-Hop, dominated by female vocalists such as Beth Gibbons, Beth Orton, Siobahn de Mare, Dot Allison, etc. And I came to the conclusion that the female voice singing, is quite possibly one of the Top Five Most Beautiful Sounds in the World.

Now, as I explore multiple genres of music, I listen to a lot of artists, both men and women. Although as mentioned before any by others, I don't enjoy women as lead singers of heavy metal or as rap artists - it just doesn't sound right to me. Otherwise, I don't make a distinction between the sexes, unlike some of my friends, who think listening to music featuring women is somewhat gay. Don't ask me why, because I don't get it.

I love female singers/bands. I am a huge Stevie Nicks fan and have all her albums. I also collect albums by:
Aimee Man
Pat Benatar
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Cranberries
Sheryl Crow
Janis Joplin
Sara McLachlan
Natalie Merchant
Liz Phair
Alanis Morissette

I also have certain albums in my collection by:
Patsy Cline
Shawn Colvin
Fiona Apple
Cowboy Junkies
Aretha Franklin
Dixie Chicks
Melissa Etheridge
Emmylou Harris
Heart
Indigo Girls
Jewel
Diana Ross & The Supremes
Alison Krauss
Lisa Loeb
Mazzy Star
The Sundays
Tina Turner
Cyndi Lauper
Linda Ronstadt
Patti Scialfa
No Doubt

I have a friend who thinks guys shouldn't listen to female singers. Guess he thinks it's not "macho" or something. All I know is if I like a song it doesn't make a difference to me if they are male or female.

Unlike the lopsided film world, music is full of superbly talented female artists. While they don't predominate in my collection, there are tons I'd love to buy.

Some I own:

The Breeders
Beth Orton
Kate Bush
Cassandra Wilson
Diamanda Galas
Fleming & John
Dead Can Dance
Cowboy Junkies

I have no use for "Lilith Fair" scenarios of woman-centrism. There's no "male" music or "female" music, just good and bad music.

In general I prefer the female voice over a male voice. For certain music though I prefer the male voice.

If it's hard rock I generally prefer the male voice but I like a woman that can rock out.

I pretty much stay away from modern R&B and Pop because for the most part both the male and female singers are terrible.

If it's country I definitely prefer the female voice. I can't stand that male country twang voice.

Lately my music tastes have been very subdued so I find myself listening to ths sweet voice of Alison Krauss mostly.

Some others I have in my collection...

Bjork/Sugarcubes
Alanis Morissette
Concrete Blonde
Cranberries
Cassandra Wilson
Diana Krall
Ani Difranco
Alison Moyet
Elastica
Jewel
Juliana Hatfield
Kim Richey
Melanie Doane
Kate Bush
Kathleen Wilhoite
K's Choice
Lisa Loeb
Me'Shell Ndegeocello
Liz Phair
Melissa Ferrick
Lucinda Williams
Nina Gordon
P J Harvey
Res
Suzanne Vega
Natalie Merchant
Natalie Imbruglia
Sade
The Corrs
Tracy Chapman

just to name a few...

Many of my favorite bands -- that dog., Tuscadero, Hot Pursuit, The Rondelles, Velocity Girl, Fuzzy, and Letters To Cleo, to name a few -- are fronted by women, and others, like The Rentals, prominently feature female vox.

Hell, I don't even buy music by females, most of the time. I have all of Jewel's cds (admire her style, but as an English major think many of her lyrics are downright stupid) because I am an aspiring singer/guitar/piano player myself.

I like Emmylou Harris, Caitlyn Cary, and Michelle Branch(although her sound is a bit immature for me), but the only woman I have been keeping up with musically is Jewel. After her performance with Rob Thomas (embarrassingly bad) at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame ceremony this year, I'm not sure I will be following her any longer.

Hey Gdrlv, how IS that Caitlyn Cary cd? She doing alright without Whiskeytown?

I listen to a variety of music. I'd say my collection is pretty evenly split. For some styles I prefer female singers. Mostly, it just doesn't matter. The only time I actually prefer males is when I listen to hard-core rap.

Two of my favorite artists who I've listened to, literally, just about every day over the last 5 years, are Veruca Salt and Shakira.

Other favorites are:
The Corrs
Aaliyah
Vanessa Williams
The Donnas
No Doubt

And I have discs by a bunch of others: Jewel, Celia Cruz, Fiona Apple, Cibo Matto, Mandy Moore, Selena, Patra, Mya, Sinead O'Connor, Thalia, Erykah Badu, En Vogue, Digable Planets, Mariah Carey, Kittie, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Natalie Imbruglia, TLC, Billie Holiday and probably more that I can't think of right now.

Fiona Apple
Natalie Merchant
Luscious Jackson
Portishead
Cowboy Junkies
Edie Brickell
Mazzy Star
Aimee Mann

To name a few... So, yes, I listen to and buy music from female bands and bands with women in them.

Yes,

I buy and listen to them, just not too often for some reason.

Most of the stuff I have bought recently are CD's of female music acts (ex: the breeders, Sleater-Kinney, etc).

Definitely!

Kim Deal = Pixies/Breeders/Amps
Tanya Donnely = Throwing Muses/Breeders/Belly
Kristen Hersh = Throwing Muses/Solo
PJ Harvey

But there aren't that many new female acts I'm interested in...guess I'm still stuck in '91-'94, huh?

An even better question might be, do you read books by female authors?

Madonna
Trisha Yearwood
Reba McEntire
Faith Hill
Shania Twain
Heart
Deborah Gibson
Pat Benatar
Dixie Chicks

All are artists who's cd's are in my car. I think that female singers can go farther with their music than guys can, and I'm not talking about just trash talking or smut. But they can take a song to an emotional level that guys can't do.

and more i cant remember
