I seen this is being released on dvd April 30th. I am considering getting this as I love the book. How is the movie (mini-series)?

I really really like this movie/mini-series whatever.
This was actually my first introduction to Douglas Adams and this series. Perhaps that is why I like it so much. I have never heard the original radio braodcasts, so cannot compare to them. This movie is actually the first two books in the series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galazy and The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, although some boring chunks of the seconds book are missing, and I didn't really miss them.
I think the film is very true to the humor of the books, although some people are turned off by the low production values. I find Zaphod's fake second head to be funny, other people are distracted by it based on other opinions I have read here. I loved Marvin in the movie. I am really excited this is coming to dvd because it was just one of those titles I thought might not.
Now I can throw out my macrovision dubbed vhs copy.

I saw the mini-series about twenty years ago on PBS as a kid.

Absolutely loved it. I read the books shortly after, and from what I remember, the series was extremely faithful to the books.

True, the special effects aren't exactly state of the art (think Doctor Who), but they work well within the context of the story.

I also have read the books and I purchsed the 'deluxe' edition of the VHS set when it came out. I really liked the series but, be forewarned, the special fx are typical of Dr Who and that style. Very low budget but fun non the less.

I plan on buying the DVD as soon as it's out even though I hadn't been paying much attention and didn't even realize it was coming out so this is good news.

Thanks, I can't wait to get this now. I don't care about the special effects, as long as it is faithfull to the story.

In case you guys aren't aware, the book was based on Douglas Adams' script for the BBC Radio play.

So...First comes the Radio Play, then comes the book, then comes the BBC TV series, and maybe a movie later on (which seems in perpetual production).

I would recommend the boxed set BBC Radio version. It's alot of fun, and every bit as good, or better than the TV series.

The TV show is a lot of fun, especially if you've heard or read the story already, and well worth seeing.
The campy special effects fit into the style of the show perfectly, IMO.

Faithful...

Despite being condensed from the book, the series/film is VERY faithful to the novel. You can read the book along with many scenes in the show word-for-word. Many of the actors in the BBC series also supplied the voices for the radio drama.

I have this on VHS, but I'm curious about the quality of the DVD video and audio, and any extras. Anybody have some information?

Hitchhiker's Guide worth it!!!!

Hi folks,

I got HGTTG from DDD for $26.60 or so (free shipping!) for the 2 disk set.

The video (there is some filmed segments for external shots) is MUCH BETTER than the old vhs ...and I dare say better than the PBS braodcast I remember seeing years ago.

It looks great considering it was done 20+ years ago.

The extras are great. Get it NOW!!!!!

Has the radio play been released on cds?

I got the HGTTG DVD and it's fantastic. Really a great collection of extras and a nice transfer to boot. Add me to those who would love to find the complete radio play on CD as well.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the CDs of the original radio series are out of print, and when I last spoke to the reps at BBC, they didn't have any plans to revive them.

ARGH!!!

I've wanted to buy these for years, but I'm not going to pay $120 U.S. on Ebay to get them.

Luckily MP3 format came along... still like to get the CDs, though.
