Xbox does not read CD-R's and CD-RW's
I've had my Xbox for a little over a month now. I've played Project Gotham Racing and enjoy the in-game music, but lately I've grown tired of it and wanted to play my own tunes.
First I tried to copy a Trance CD I bought at Best Buy a while ago. It took forever for the Xbox to rip it, but it did just fine. Naming the tracks after ripping them took a while without a keyboard, but I could manage.
Second I wanted to copy tracks off of a CD I burned on my PC. When I inserted the disc, the Xbox said it could not recognize the disk and instructed me to insert a valid disc instead. I tried putting in a variety of CD-R's from different manufacturers, but all with the same result.
Anyone else encountered this? I'm guessing it's for copy protection purposes, but it's really annoying. One of the Xbox's prime selling points is its ability to play custom songs during a game, but it appears as if the Xbox can't even read custom CD's. Grrrrr.

I heard that certain brands of CD-RW will work, but not CD-r's. I have ripped tons of music directly from cd's but none from cd-rw's yet.

Despite the original subject title of this thread, I have to admit I didn't actually try using CD-RW's. Just CD-R's. Sorry bout that.
Well I tried using a Verbatim CD-RW. First time I inserted it, the Xbox said it couldn't recognize it. Then I ejected the tray, reinserted it, and it read it just fine. Go figure. Thanks for the quick replies.

Why was I able to take a CD-R and rip the tracks onto my X-Box then? Not only can I play CD-Rs like a regular CD but can also rip the tracks onto my X-Box? However, it did take a long time (about a half hour to rip 28 minutes of music). I used a K Hypermedia CD-R. My X-Box was also purchased Nov. 15. Anyone else able to do this?

Actually, CD-RW's do work (I have tried it myself), and SOME CD-R's work, while some don't. Somewhere on the new there was a chart listing which brands work and which don't...

An old Ricoh CD-RW I had worked like a charm. I'm not going to load up a bunch of CD-RWs; I'll just keep using this same one, hence re-writable. But to the trained ear, the resulting tracks on my Xbox don't sound quite as good as popping in a legit CD.

Today I took the Maxell CD-R that didn't work in my Xbox and put it in my PS2. The PS2 played it just fine. I've never heard of PS2's having trouble reading any CD-R's or CD-RW's.
Anyone know exactly why the Xbox reads some CD's and doesn't read others? Was it a deliberate action on the part of Microsoft?

I've burned a few CD-RWs already and they all worked fine for the XBox. I've tried Verbatim RW and the GQ (Great Quality) disc from Fry's. Also make sure that the RW is 650 MB. I don't think XBox read disk that are 700 MB. Anyways, there is also a post which discuss which disk are compatible. The link is Site.
