View Full Version : Best Film of 1983 (ongoing survey)

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1983 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1983 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

We're getting into the "before my time" area (I was 12 in '83) but for my vote, I'll have to go with Return Of The Jedi also, even if it had Ewoks.

My vote:

Terms of Endearment.

BTW and FWIW,
Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the Star Wars films...it is actually the only one that I have watched more than once.

hard to decide......a pretty ho-hum year I guess.....
I couldn't really decide between A Christmas Story and The Year of Living Dnagerously (I'm a big fan of Videodrome too), so I'll just pick A Christmas Story

If Return of the Jedi wins, either this is one of the worst years of filmmaking ever or the poll is quickly falling into the uninformative range. Jedi is good but not great. Then again, I've seen almost no other films from this year, so perhaps it was an awful year.

Oh well, at least Blade Runner is coming up...

Return of the Jedi is a great film. Some of the best moments in the entire saga came from jedi. That's my vote.

Er...yeah. I can see that the films being picked in these surveys are now becoming more and more childish. ROTJ a great film? Harrison Ford's acting alone prevents it from being that. Get serious, people.

Heck yeah - Them's fightin' words!! :D

j/k

Yeah, I definitely agree that with ROTJ probably winning this one and then other recent winners like Ghostbusters and Ferris Bueller's Day Off even - we know they're not great films, but they definitely have their fans... and if that's what these polls end of showing, then so be it.

And just because they aren't all great films (at least, according to me ;)), a lot of these are films that people come back to a lot and/or are sentimental favorites. I think with the 70s coming up, we'll see a lot of truly great films winning again, but hey, we'll see how it goes. Who knows, maybe crap like Star Wars will continue to win :yack:

Just kidding about that last part ;)

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing.

This is a poll for the BEST picture of the year. If ROTJ was the best picture of that year, cinema died over 20 years ago.

Well... Return of the Jedi ran away with it. I doubt anyone's too shocked about that.

1) Return of the Jedi (17 votes)
2) Scarface (6)
3) The Right Stuff / National Lampoon's Vacation (4 each)
5) A Chirstmas Story (3)

This one's free to close.
