Ever since I started listening to music I have for the most part liked rock the most. But I have gone thru different phases:
mid 80's
Michael Jackson
Madonna
late 80's
Heavy Metal hair bands
early 90's
Rock/Metal
mid 90's
Rock/Metal
also went thru 2 years of only listening to Rap music
late 90's
Tool Era
Trance music
Rock
Metal has somewhat lessened in the past 2 years (I guess Im getting old)

I definitely go through cycles. Most of the time I'll listen to anything in my collection, but I'll ocassionally go for weeks at a time listening to only industrial, punk, goth, hard-edged alternative, etc. I also go through times when I only want to listen to specific artists like Leonard Cohen, Bob Marley, The Cure, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Tool, or Depeche Mode.

I go through mini-phases I guess. What's cool about phases is you can build up a nice stash of music from a certain style and have it to go back to over and over. In the late 80's I was very into cowpunk/alternative country and bought a ton of music from these little bands. The two bands that influenced me the most in my formative years were New Order and the Replacements. So, I always like that kind of stuff, but I'm getting tired of poppy punk bands. For now, my phase is electronica.

Yeah... but it's usually on an hourly basis
Early in the day, I usually listen to contemporary rock.
Later, it's alt-rock/post-grunge.
Then it's hip-hop.
Then it's trip-hop/electronica.
Then Dream/Indie Pop.
Round off the day with a little classical/piano.
Not that it's a regimented schedule, and I listen to a lot of other stuff. But this is a broad pattern that I always seem to follow... I don't know why.

I couldn't listen to the same style of music all the time or I would go stark raving mad. My tastes are fairly varied, so when I get tired of a particular style, it's easy to find something different to get it out of my system.
There are about 10-15 core albums in the collection that I always fall back on, though.

First and foremost: I am only 17.
Ages 0-6 : Barney-esque ****. All that kid stuff.
Ages 7-12 : Country
Ages 13-15 : Rap (nothing but---rebeled against parents and listened to it when they weren't around.)
Ages 16-17 : This is where I became ecelectic. I listen to every kind of music there is....no doubt about it. Sometimes I listen to more of one genre than the other, but I don't shut any portion out.
What is in my six disc cd player in the car:
Tom Waits (Best of... disc 1)
Velvet Underground (don't remember which cd, I have many of them)
JJ Cale (Anthology Disc 1)
Jay-Z (Blueprint)
T. Graham Brown (don't remember cd title)
Beatles (Revolver)

I'm constantly going through phases. Right now I'm in a garage rock phase. Bands such as The White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, The Hives and such are appealing to me.
I always love classic rock and some modern rock bands and avant metal stuff like Fantomas and Mr. Bungle. If I listen to rap it's definitely the weird stuff.
I'm also into downtempo electronic music. Portishead, Kruder and Dorfmeister.
I'm all over the map.

I think I went through one kind of phase from when I was about 6-9, but at the same time was listening to my "normal" music. I have always listened to Classic rock/Hard rock/Metal, but in my early years I had a Michael Jackson and MC Hammer fixation hehe. I attribute it to being in elemtary school at the time that they were popular.

I love when I am driving out of the school parking lot, blasting a Beatles album...you should see the jaws on the ground from almost half of the student body... But when Jay-Z is on it's okay.
And most of them think I am a "redneck" because I go off roading in my Dodge Ram Extended Cab...they say "Why is your car always dirty?"
Thank God college is around the corner.
BTW, will be 18 on May 23!

phases, I guess.....I'll listen to the same band, even the same album for weeks at a time, then move on to another band for weeks....In my cd player now is System of a Down, S.O.A.D. Toxicity, and A Perfect Circle. I've been listening to SOAD non-stop for weeks, probably about to move back to Tool - I always do
