Andrew W.K., superstar
PRIMAL SCREAMER: Andrew W.K. is loud, filthy, even a little bit crazy. And by the time you finish this story, he’ll be a star
It is a cliche of celebrity profiles to begin with the subject’s arriving for the interview—Gwyneth walked into the hotel lobby, a vision in red ...—and, typically, the gimmick is contrived and pointless. But then you watch Andrew W.K., the planet’s next rock star, walk into the lobby of New York’s Hotel Chelsea, and this is what you see: a tall, muscular man wearing a filthy white T shirt, filthy white jeans and filthy white Nike high-tops.

Superstar? No thanks... Andrew W.K. seems to be pretty mindless as well as harmless. That and he seems to be some sort of time traveller from 1994.

This guy sucks big time. Won't surprise me one bit if he is the next big thing

at WHFS, the song "Party Hard" is winding up nightly in the Top 9 at 9 program. Missed the Lost Prophets/Andrew WK/Apex Theory show last Tuesday night at the Black Cat.

I wish I could watch that show out here in SLC soon but It's at a 21 and over club I think. Apex Theory are really good.
I like this guy. I don't know why because it is mindless rock, but his energy is great. I think the whole party thing is funny too, but I don't know. He has been getting a lot of hype and what not. I think it's because he has already blown up in Europe and now they are just importing him back on oever to the states.

I sort of like AWK.
True, it is big dumb rawk, but I also get the vibe that there's a self-awareness about it. The music verges on being satire -- it's not completely satire, but I think it's certainly being done with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
My advice -- just enjoy it for what it is. Have a good time, and party hard.

I kind of like the song "Party Hard", but the guy has no vocal skills at all. Even if they just mixed him loud enough to be intelligible, it would be better. I heard a few other tracks, and wasn't overly impressed. Most of it was a dead-on re-tread of Party Hard. I'll probably pass on this one. I'm having too much fun listening to retro/indie metal to pretend to be cool by listening to this guy.

There's self-awareness about AWK - but it's not an ironic sensibility: it's post-ironic! It's the ultimate flip-off to the last decade of hard music with it's overreliance on intellectualism, dour goth patronization, pedantic technical virtuosity, and claymation videos. And we won't even go into the meandering minimalism that's overtaken the noise genre (where AWK comes from, on a very very nice label called Bulb Records) This is music as it should be - energetic and fun, with a stage presence to match.
If you saw MTV2's "Most Controversial Videos" special yesterday with AWK hosting, you'd feel the same way. Sheer brilliance.

I saw AWK once on MTV2 playing the piano, it was a barbra streisand song i think... weird indeed. He isn't just a stupid rocker, i think he actually has something to say.
Then again, i'm probably wrong.

I had never heard of em before, until SNL last weekend. I couldn't believe they had them on there. The music was terrible, and I couldn't decide if they are a spoof of a band like Tenascious D or really trying to be one..
Brought back the memories of Faith No More. haha Man AWK Sucks...
I can see it now.. This just in... Mtv says they're buzz worthy, and they're multiplatinum instantly.

I am now convinced, courtesy of the Andrew WK "phenomenon," that the (major) record companies are run by Sadean Aliens who derive uproarious laughs by selling the public their product.
("Bwahahahaahaaa, they bought it again! Those cretins!")
Think of the fat, rich, cigar-chomping pre-Pure Food And Drug Act Sausage Moguls who made millions selling people rat guts, feces and flies in marketed form.
If I want a violent party album I'll throw on Iggy's "Raw Power," thank you very much, Mr. WK and Universal Music.
