question about wall/ceiling speakers
I am considering installing ceiling speakers for rear surrounds in my home theater. I would appreciate any rocommendations anyone has about what kinds are good. I know that ceiling speakers are not the BEST option for pure sound quality but is going with ceiling speakers create a big drop in quality?

I've heard conflicting news because I am also interested in some in-the-wall stuff. The main drawback to the ceiling speakers is that they will be firing down right at you so the effects will be more directional and less room filling if that makes sense. I've been told you can get good quality from in the wall stuff but you have to spend more for equivalent sound. Forget about the $100 cheapies if you're looking for any type of quality.

I myself pondered this self same question 3 months ago. But as Big Jim stated quality in wall ceilng speakers will set up back a pretty penny. What I myself opted to do was mount a pair of JBL N24's to my ceiling via speaker supports and yes the directionality of the speakers is an issue. I have mine ever so slightly pointed toward the rear wall at about 120 degree downward angle to create a more difuse soundscape. You did not mention what kind of speakers you intend to use for the rest of your HT setup (R, L, C) or your receiver(5.1 or 6.1 ?) You'll want all of your speakers to be from the same manufacturer if possible. If you really have must use inwall-ceiling speakers I would suggest you check out Definitive Technology's line of inwall speakers, which also come bipolar. I've read that these are great speakers. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

I have a question about positioning a ceiling mounted speaker. I have a smallish room and due to a bunch of factors I have to mount my rears on the ceiling. They are bose that I have had for a while and am using them due to the room size and economy (I will upgrade when we move to a larger home). These will be mounted aprox 2 feet on the side of the couch (furthest distance available). Now should I direct these directly towards the listening/sitting positing or towards the back wall? One is situated into a corner the other is in an opening. Thanks for the advice.

Not sure what your budget is, but the Thiel Powerpoints are excellent surface mount speakers that work well on the ceiling.

Actually my budget is 0 as I already have the AM5s and the wife said no more HT til she gets new living room & bedroom furniture(I just bought the fronts, sub, receiver and misc cable and power conditioner).
