Does anyone have experience with Matrix 6.1 output, where the receiver creates a virtual rear surround sound based on the EX signal? Is the quality and experience equal or better than 5.1 sound?

And does anyone know a site that has a list of movies that have EX soundtracks, since I seem to remember hearing that many DVDs include the 6.1 track but don't list it on the package.

I just picked up a new Yamaha receiver (after my Sony blew the rear channel) and it supports Matrix 6.1 (along with lots of other stuff). Can't wait to get it all hooked up, esp if I can do the Matrix 6.1.

the matrix should NOT be in EX/6.1 surround. the phantom menace was the FIRST movie to use the dolby EX system, in fact lucas films helped develop the EX system with dolby. the matrix was made before EP1 so it does not contain the 6.1 encodeing.

i do believe i heard somewhere that the last Bond movie Tommorrow Never Dies has a 6.1 sound track on the DVD enve though the case says only 5.1 .... but i dont have the hardware to play6.1 so i cant say that info is correct.

I just bought a Yamaha receiver that is 6.1. A lower priced Sony has Matrix 6.1. I'm assuming the difference is Yamaha is true 6.1, where as the Sony 'pulls' some of the rear channels to create a 'pseudo' rear center speaker, kind of like 'phantom' surround.

This is my guess on the whole thing. My receiver has been shipped but I haven't received it yet...can't wait.

The Sony virtual matrixed receiver are 5.1 outputs, while a true DTS ES is a 6.1 setup. Look at the Exorcist The Version you've Never seen before. That has a DD EX track on it.

I have the Sony receiver that you're talking about. I can't really tell the difference between the Matrix 6.1 and regular 5.1.....

I currently have a Yamaha receiver (I forgot the model #) that utilizes 6.1 Matrix (not 6.1 discrete). I do notice a slight improvement with 6.1 Matrix over 5.1. 6.1 discrete is the way to go though (even though only a handful of DVDs offer that format).
