Any cover that is under 150dpi is not really fit for quality printing. So please use you own discretion before printing out any cover!

I'm going to attempt to make some of my own DVD covers, and the links above are most helpful. Thanks!

However, there is one link that is not on the list, which I need the most. Does anybody know where I could find hi-res images of poster art? This might not be available anywhere, so I might have to change my strategy a bit...but maybe I will be surprised.

Places that sell posters, like http://www.postersfast.com/ will often have images that work out to about 100-150 dpi, and usually have a logo superimposed in the image. They're somewhat useable if you take the time to get rid of the logo.

I hope someone has a better answer, but I don't think there is one, other than buy the poster and scan it yourself.

You're welcome!

Another place to find scans of poster art is http://www.hundland.com/posters/main.htm. Look for the titles with a PIA beside them, these are their best quality scans.

I will add a poster art and logo catagory next update.

Thanks! I went out to Borders tonight and picked a few books with full page reproductions of poster art that I can scan in as well. Hopefully I can find everything I need.

What I am going to attempt to do (if anybody really cares) is to make an AFI Top 100 DVD Cover set - complete with spine numbers (Citizen Kane = #1, Casablanca = #2, The Godfather = #3, etc) and original poster art on the front covers.

If the set turns out halfway decent, I'll post them up on a site and share them with everyone.

after a long breather, i've started to work on another jacket, this one for PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.
i've never been happy with the image they've used on the video boxes, ever since they first released it on tape back in '86. i've been hoping to run across some form of the original neon-style illustration art and finally found something a couple weeks ago while out of state for my job.
not perfect, but

OK, I need a little advice from all the expert cover designers in here. Like I said above, I'm going to try and design a set for the Top 100 AFI films using the original poster art for each film.

I just threw one together real fast to try and get an idea of how it will look. Keep in mind, I threw this together pretty fast, so it's obviously not my final version.

http://members.cox.net/toddsm66/TaxiDriverSample.JPG

Now, what all would you suggest to make this look better? I don't claim to be an expert graphic designer, thus I need some creative ideas. I think I'm pretty much happy with the front cover - that was the easy part.

What should I do with the spine to make it stand out a little better? It just looks a little plain the way it is. Keep in mind, I will be creating 100 of these, and I would like the look to stay consistant throughout -- and I would like to keep the spine numbers.

For the back cover, I just took the current back from the DVD and used it for now. I will most likely customize this part later on with my own screen shots and text...but I just wanted to get a sample out now.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Toddsm66,
just a few suggestions...take 'em for what their worth...or not.

-if you are going to be doing, concievably, 100 titles which will all shar the same basic spine-layout,

1) make sure you save a template with the elements tht will be used over and over again, pasted in place, so you can just slip the other new, elements more or less into place.
like regularly saving your work, something everybodys usually knows, but have to get in the practicing of doing at first.

2) i would make a logo for AFI..., this can be something as simple as choosing the proper font and sizes to use, or you can do vector work, if your really industrious. just think simple, but distinctive, in either case . a simple block style like helvetica or whatever just will look unprofessional. you'll probably have to kern the letters a bit for whatever you choose to give it a really pro look.
also you can add a ™ symbol to the final logo, to make it look supremely kosher.

i, personally, wouldn't use a color like the red your using for thoses elements either, or at least at the intensity it is. it's a good idea to tie all the spine elements together thru hue or intensity,
if hue: i would choose
either a much more washed out shade of red to harmonize with the white letters of the logo,
or
change the hue of the afi & # to something else, as long as its fairly low-key , unless you also change the color of the title and any other element with a similar color...

intesity means that since the Taxi Driver title was in white ( if i remember), then the other elements will need to be closer to the white end of the greyscale...etc. right now the red of the afi/# tries to call equal attention to spine, competeing with the movie logo.
really, that should be the first thing you see with the other elements after.
if Taxi Driver were in that shade of red, then the other bits could be in off-white, washed out red, etc...

color sensibilities are very personal, and a great opportunity to express your creativity.
so i would never hand suggestions off with the implication that "THIS is what you HAVE to do"
these are mearly things i thought about when i looked at your cover.

other than that, it looks GREAT so far!
can't wait to see how the rest come out.

yes those Herschenson catlogs and history of cinema thru poster books are a great reference to use...thats how i got a lot of my images.

i should have been more precise. i meant the whole "AFI TOP 100"
i would, at the very least make it 3 lines

AFI
TOP
100

and, if it were me, i would probably drop the word "top" and try to integrate the "100" with AFI in some way (maybe like having a rectangular translucent box and having

AFI (the logo your using)
100

etched out, beveled, etc.
in any case, still keeping it very simple, so it will read easy at such a small size.

if i could just find a free easy image hosting site
i would post an example.
i'm not good at explaining things

again, this is just my opinion. its not a commandment.

I have an AFI 100 question(that will relate to this, so bear with me). So, Will there ever be other movies in the top 100? I understand the need to number the top 100 movies, but that would mean you would have to re-number/re-print the covers in case of new additions, subtractions to the list. I understand that the bulk of the list will not change much, but I'm wondering why the number is such an important thing. Of course, maybe the films will never change(which at that point, would make the list a little less useful to me).

I think I would prefer a case that indicates that the movie has been, or is in the top 100 according to the AFI, and leave it at that. Then, I could put up a nice display sign that goes next to the dvd's stating what the current order is. That's just me, though(for what it's worth, I don't care about criterions being numbered, either.)

Anyway, nice job.

ToddSm66
02-23-02, 12:58 PM
The main reason I'm doing this is because I'm trying to collect all 100 of the AFI films. The way my collection is now, they are all scattered around my collection, so it's hard for me to see which ones I still need. If I had all of them lined up in order by spine number, it would be easier for me to see the holes I need to fill in -- kinda of the way people collect Criterions. One quick glance down the shelf, and you can see you need #52, #56, #58, etc...

It's nothing extremely important, just an idea I've had. I've been wanting to create some custom covers for a while, and I finally have some spare time at work to mess with it.

Thanks for the suggestions, ckolchak. I'll play around with the AFI logo a bit more. I'm thinking I might move the title all the way to the top of the spine and put the AFI logo and spine number together at the bottom. Something like this:

i played around with your sunset blvd spine a little and did up an example of an afi logo for you to use or maybe just to spark you off in another direction.
since i can't post any images, if you want to drop me an email at
ckolchakins@hotmail.com
i'll send you some basic examples of what i was talking about.

nickster: i'm not sure exactly what your talking about, but it sounds like you just need a replacement amaray case. they should sell em at suncoast, best buy, media play, etc.

That would be more than interesting. Todd, were you the guy that did the North by Northwest cover in the style of the other Hitchcock films. The link had a problem with it (no larger image available, just the smaller one). If you could repost it that would be great. Perhaps I'm thinking of someone else.

Btw, I still do the Manchester Road Race every Thanksgiving Day - done it for years.

I also echo ckolchak comment on perhaps a more washed out color selection for the AFI/Spine #. White would look pretty classy too and would not distract from the title. Another approach would be to use the same color as the title.

I personally would drop the spine number. As someone mentioned, when the AFI adds another film to the list, everything below it shifts down one and where does that leave you? I also have about 35 Criterion DVDs and about 325 total in my collection. I don't keep my Criterion's separate and put them in number order because when I want to find a movie I want to search by title.

Your point about wanting to know that you still need AFI move ranked ## or more importantly the corresponding title (say Schindler's List could be much more easily solved by just putting them in an Excel file. The gaps will show just as well and it is a lot easier to update.

I'm interested in possibly (emphasis on the possibly) doing a series of covers for Hitchock's films that have been released on DVD that use the film's original poster art for the cover.

Why would I want to do such a thing?

Basically, it comes down to Saul Bass. It's a shame that Universal ditched the original cover for Vertigo that used his design - it's truly a thing of beauty. I'd like to create a series that would work with that original release of Vertigo as a template (or at least as the inspiration), but would also work well as a set. To do this, I'd more than likely change the color of the spine (possibly to black?) so that the set would visiually go together on the shelf. I'd also thought about numbering the series since that seems to be what all the cool kids are doing these days.

Question - does anyone know of a definitive, chronological list of the finished films that Hitch directed? I'd rather not include the ones that he simply wrote or produced, just the ones that he directed.

Thanks,
Keith Finch

One would have to be an expert to call something a definitive list so I'll avoid that. However, certainly try IMDB.com link below:

http://us.imdb.com/Name?Hitchcock,+Alfred

If a title is unfinished it says so if uncredited it says so ..... I would guess that if it was wrong some Hitchcock lover would have already smacked them around for it by now ...

Great Idea!
i'm not a great fan of the design universal came up with for the Hitchcock line (and all these 'star' themed collections in general)

i agree with you. the art work from this era , especially work done by Bass, usually blows away anything the art directors in the video division are bound to cobble together in photoshop.
all you really need for a collection theme is some marker/logo/banner on the spine ( for which the line profile of hitch would be a great place to put it) and *maybe* a minor banner on the top of the cover of the dvd.
as much as i hate snapper cases, warner seems to be the only one who has enough respect for the original art to use it on the dvd's.
as a source for scans- i believe there is a softcover book available that is only reproductions of Hitchcock poster art. don't remember who good the repros were, but for anybody wanting to do this, it shouldn't be hard to dig up goo material to work with.

I too would also like to request Opera LE and the Hire Please.....

Also by any chance could someone scan the insert for 15 Minutes for me too?

I also would like to have inserts for Trimark dvds such as Bully and "O", which never came with any. If anyone can do one with chapter listings, that would be great!

And also 1 last request for MGM Midnight Movie insert of Killer Klowns From Outer Space, which also didn't come with an insert.

Also I was wondering if anyone could make a cover for Kenwood's Sovereign Free DVD? If so that would be great!

Thanks!

Ok, I'll post this for the THIRD time now. :) For anyone who owns the Evil Dead: BotD edition, do you think it will fit into one of these custom cases along side ED2 and AOD? I am planning to buy the BotD, and I really want one of these metal cases, but I am concerned about the oversized rubber. How much thicker/taller is it than a normal keepcase? Thanks.

For those who have purchased (or will purchase) the Book of the Dead, and who don't want to store their REAL Book of the Dead case on their cramped DVD shelves, I've created a keep case cover insert for you. Here's a small version:

What I could use now is a pointer to a hosting site that will allow me to upload the large (2+ MB) jpg file.

I'll have to check on the height, but I know that Paul will adjust the width. I personally had him do a "3 1/2" to fit the AOD LE. I'm sure he could adjust for the the BOTD version. I'll check the height on my copy tonight and let you know.

Thanks.

Yes, I have considered it. I've been holding off because I don't think I'll be buying any more of The Simpsons (Gasp!) seasons and I thought maybe someone else might eventually want to make matching covers. But, if someone wants to post or email the dimensions for the triple case, I'll go ahead and make one.

Well, I just looked the BOTD is slightly taller ... if you need the exact dimensions let me know. It appears to be about as thick as a double alpha, except for the nose and ear which are fairly 3D. If you wanted to squeeze those in it would fit except for the height I believe. You may want to pick up the BOTD and measure it to be sure. If you need any more info or some measurements, let me know.

I agree it is somewhat difficult to see, but I'm torn. I really would like to keep the purple color, since it is the same color used inside the book, and elsewhere on the packaging, and I wanted to keep that same visual style. One thing that doesn't show up well in the small image is that I have added a yellow "glow" around the letters. I have enhanced the glow a bit more to make the lettering stand out (see the example below), but if you guys really want me to, I'll change the color (red looked pretty good in my tests).

I have a box of it here. It's not heavy "photo paper" per se (which I knew when I ordered it). That's why they call it "photo quality paper." It's about 24-lb weight, matte coated for ink jet printing. It produces a much brighter, sharper image than plain uncoated paper and works great for DVD covers.

Make sure you use the bright white side, the other side isn't coated...

Randy, are you sure you're not right clicking and hitting "save picture as" instead of "save target/link as"? If so, you're just saving the small sample picture. The full size pic should be over 1MB.

Any chance of anyone doing a Willy Wonka cover using the original theatrical poster art instead of the crappy cover on the current DVD?

TWIN PEAKS COVERS

Thanks to everyone that helped me get the covers downloaded correctly. Lafe sent me
the link and told me to try the download with Explorer instead of Netscape. He also told me to use the target as instead of the save image command. Netscape does not have this command and that caused my problem.
I now have the 3 covers and they are great, and I learned something in the process.

Again, thank you to all the people that helped me.

Netscape doesn't have the "Save Target As" option, but it DOES have the "Save Link As" option. On my website, it also says the other variations that your browser may have...you just have to pick the one that was appropriate for you...I guess you didn't see that note on my page tho.

Oh yeah, and the FWWM cover art is now done. Check it out at http://www.csh.rit.edu/~jlyon/coverart/

How about someone doing South Park Seasons 1 - 4?

A quick question: Does anyone know if the Photoshop Elements software is any good? It's supposed to be a trimmed down version of Photoshop and the price is much more affordable ($100 instead of $575).

Dear JLyon, the Twin Peaks covers are GREAT!
I think the FWWM DVD has chapter stops, but
does not have a list nor name for each chapter.
You could create a unique insert for FWWM!
Have you considered making a cover for Elephant Man?

It was already planned to do a FWWM insert...in fact I've already made it and put it up on my site :)

I have not considered making an Elephant Man cover. I think it is because I don't have the Elephant Man on DVD...so I haven't thought abot making a cover. :)

Dear JLyon,
Thanks for the insert!
I printed up the covers and used them with a slim
double disc case and put the DVD with the soundtrack
CD's. So I have FWWM and Twin Peaks Pilot Episode
with both the DVD and CD's. A very nice set.
Thanks again for the good work!

Guys, I appreciate the offer of monetary support. Right now it's not needed, but if at some point that changes I'll let you know.

Here's what happened though:

4/2/02 - all .jpg and .zip files in my account vanish. .htm files and forums still present

--me: hey, what happened to my files
--host: we have no idea. it might be a security issue. change your pw and re-upload the files
--me: you guys log this stuff - what the heck happened?
--host: (no response)

4/5/02 - I start re-uploading 1.7GB of content at 8kb/sec (go DSL!), but at the same time am exploring other hosting options

4/9/02 - my entire /htdocs folder vanishes. everything is gone (including the ~1GB of content I reuploaded).

--me: !@$!@$*#!#$#$!
--host: (no reponse)

4/13/02
I have managed to secure a new host. They are running freeBSD + PHP + mySQL. my old stuff was just straight html, so I'm redoing the site to take advange of the new capability. I'm also in the process of having the domain redirected to my new server. I'll post an update here when I'm back up

Hey mdX! Very happy to hear you will get things up & running again! Since I was the contributor to the last few covers, I was almost afraid it was something I did! I didn't think my scans were THAT bad!

I am looking forward to seeing the new site, and ready to help with some new covers. :)

mdX
04-15-02, 03:22 PM
well I'm now about 90% done with the scripts, and just need to do a little work here and there. I also need to generate small data files for each cover for the main script to load (doesn't take long, but at last count I had 250 unique pages).

I'm also downsizing all the preview images to make the pages load faster, renaming files so that the name better identifies the cover type, and zipping up all hi-res images to make them easier to download (among a ton of other little things).

if you guys have any suggestions as to what you'd like to see on the site, with regards to layout or what info is shown, or anything at all, just drop me a line here (matt_devillier@yahoo.com)

the DNS change for the site will take a few days to go through, and I hope to have everything ready by then. best case is end of this week, but I might need the weekend too.

For those who are interested, I now have “new and improved” Excalibur covers available for download. The front is pretty much unchanged, but I have reworked the back and it is much “cleaner” than my previous version. Most of the text I have entered by hand, instead of using scanned text from the original back cover. Additionally, I have done an alternate cover with a black back.

http://users.exp.net/hinson/ExcaliburDVD1small.JPG

The cover with the white back can be downloaded here (300dpi, 3.7 MB):
http://www.dvdcoverart.net/getFile.php?file=excalibur_cstm_hires.zip

http://users.exp.net/hinson/ExcaliburDVD2small.JPG

The cover with the black back can be downloaded here (300dpi, 3.7 MB):
http://www.dvdcoverart.net/getFile.php?file=excalibur_cstm1_hires.zip

I also have recently finished a new Superman cover. To give credit where credit is due, this cover was conceived from Ckolchak's Superman Cover (at http://www.realitycrash.com/dvdcovers.htm). I have reworked it, however, to compliment the Supergirl cover from the Limited Edition DVD Anchor Bay release.

http://users.exp.net/hinson/SupermanDVDsmall.JPG

The Superman cover (300dpi, 2.4 MB) can be downloaded here:

A couple of constructive comments:

The links don't work; you really shouldn't have spaces in file names as a rule, but they can be fixed like this:

http://users.exp.net/hinson/Excalibur%20DVD1.JPG

Also, on Excalibur the word "Magnificent" is misspelled.

O.K. I fixed the spelling error (can't believe I missed that). Here are the new links (and I changed them in the previous post also):

DVDcoverart.com seems to be the only site to have the keepcase-formatted art for Buffy Season 1 (not the three-case R4 set, natch, but one for a Suspiria-sized triple keepcase.) but now it's "parked." What gives? That site certainly got a lot of lip service on this thread, and from what I saw in archive.org's stored version, it was worth it. Any shot of the site coming back? And while I'm at it, here's my list of proper keepcase cover requests:

- triple-keepcase sized art for Buffy R1 Season 1 (was it red? I forget)
- Buckaroo Banzai featuring the original poster art... or ANYTHING else!!!
- Real Genius, also featuring original art. I saw the new version at DVDfile.com... appalling.

Thanks!

dvdcoverart (.com and .net) will be up as soon as the DNS changes propogate. I need to have the nameservers changed first (which is in progress), then I'll set up the forwarding to point to the new server's IP. If I was a betting man, I'd say .net will be up first, hopefully by monday.

So I just got my package from www.inetdvd.com, i.e., one triple keepcase and one sextuple (!) keepcase. I printed out Michael Miskulin's custom art (courtesy of www.dvdcoverart.net, thank you very much), and all I can say is I want more! I've ported my Buffy R1 Season 1 set to the keepcase, and plan on doing the same for Season 2 in June. If Fox keeps up this timeframe, we'll have all 6 current seasons by the end of next year (just in time for Season 8?) I'm already holding on to Dr. Miskulin's (Dr., right?) Season 3 cover for R2--thanks for not mentioning region coding anywhere on the box. I only hope the features listed on boxes 2 and 3 appear on the R1 releases, although I am confident he will adust the art accordingly, as he did for Season 1.

All that said, if you own Buffy Season 1, you owe it to yourself to download this wonderful art and get a rock-solid case from inetdvd.

On the subject of Inetdvd, it seems the one case they don't sell is the slim dual-disc case used by House/House II and Shrek. Does anyone out there sell these, or do I have to make do with the Amarays a la Gladiator?

The Grifters + Insert (the insert is a custom white background to save a little ink)

Logan's Run + Insert

Dangerous Beauty + Insert

Three Kings Insert

They are all at 300 dpi, scanned at 600dpi (thus took for fricken ever to open, edit, save, etc.). I'm going to upload them to http://www.public.asu.edu/~bolshoi/images/dvdart/ overnight, so they won't be available until tomorrow AM - and then Matt will post them at dvdcoverart.net after that. BasiaMille,

I'm glad you liked my Buckaroo cover.

The only two covers I've created so far have been replacements for horrid new studio art, so unless someone else does it first, I plan on tackling Real Genius after it comes out. However, I'm not sure what the original poster art looks like. Does someone have a graphic or link they could direct me to?

Also, the Better Off Dead art has always been that color. My LD cover is exactly the same, and it definitely hasn't yellowed with age. That was another one I planned to tackle, but now I don't have to.

Thanks for the link, but I actually have the LD—and will possibly use a scan of that for a new cover—but I don't think it's the original poster art. I'm looking for confirmation one way or another. I agree it's definitely better than CTS' new art, but if the original poster art is different, I'd prefer to use that rather than the LD cover.

If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

How would one go about scanning laserdisc covers. I have some laserdiscs that I would like to put onto DVD...and they will certainly never see the light of day.

Any input is appreciated.
