View Full Version : Best Film of 1989 (ongoing survey)

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1989 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1989 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

My short list:

1) Field of Dreams
2) Born on the Fourth of July
3) Do the Right Thing

I've only seen 17 from '89 though.

Just FYI, and to help you remember some other possibilities (I'm sure Sunday Morning will provide us with many more), here are Siskel & Ebert's choices:

Ebert:
1) Do the Right Thing
2) Drugstore Cowboy
3) My Left Foot
4) Born on the Fourth of Fuly
5) Roger & Me
6) The Mighty Quinn
7) Field of Dreams
8) Crimes and Misdemeanors
9) Driving Miss Daisy
10) Say Anything

Siskel:
1) Do the Right Thing
2) Roger & Me
3) Drugstore Cowboy
4) Enemies: A Love Story
5) Born on the Fourth of July
6) The Little Mermaid
7) Crimes and Misdemeanors
8) The Fabulous Baker Boys
9) Say Anything
10) The War of the Roses

...but please don't turn this into a discussion/criticism of their lists ;)

Results so far:
1) Do the Right Thing (10 votes)
2) Field of Dreams (5)
3) Say Anything (4.5)
4) Glory (4)
5) Born on the Fourth of July (3)

A few people gave one film as their favorite, but another as one they consider the best - for these I counted 1/2 a vote for each.

The 1988 Thread is now open here! (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=186578)

Can't believe this thread is two pages old and no-one has mentioned THE ABYSS yet. Ok, for the record this was my favorite year in history for Hollywood movies. Just look at what we had in the summer compared to what we have now

SUMMER 89 - LAST CRUSADE, ABYSS, FIELD OF DREAMS, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, BATMAN, LETHAL WEAPON 2, WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.

SUMMER 2001 - THE MUMMY RETURNS, PLANET OF THE APES, PEARL HARBOR, TOMB RAIDER.

Ah, those were the days. A top ten?

1. FIELD OF DREAMS
2. INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE
3. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
4. DEAD POET'S SOCIETY
5. GLORY
6. THE ABYSS

Frustratingly, I have a tie between Say Anything... and The Abyss.

The former gave us "dissed in the Malibu", one of the best catchphrases that never was, and the latter provided perhaps the most pulse pounding 10 minute sequence (two stranded soulmates, one oxygen suit, one plan) I've ever seen.
