The John Cale appreciation thread

"Blood on the windows, blood on the walls
Blood on the carpet and down in the hall..."
- John Cale, the gun

The man's truly beyond cool. He was in the Velvet Underground, then went solo and put out some fantastic albums. Any other fans out there?

Oh yes...

"Vintage Violence" and "Paris 1919" are both classics in my book. Sadly, those are the only Cale albums I own due to a lack of $$$ over the past few months. What are some of your favorites?

When it comes to Cale, I don't even know where to begin.

Here is a man who has produced legendarily influential albums, high-profile film soundtracks, and made some damn fine music himself.

It's like he's almost from a whole other world.

Now you made me want to dig out my Velvets CD.

I'll take Cale over Lou Reed any day of the week.

I fell in love with Cale's music when I was a teenager listening to "The Gift" on a Velvet Underground album I had just purchased. I remember thinking anyone that twisted is tres cool.

I then found out about a DJ at a local college who was totally into Cale's music and made a point of playing lots of Cale music on his show every friday night. This is the person who unwittingly introduced me to Cale's solo works.

The first album I bought was Fear is a Man's Best Friend.

My favorites:
Vintage Violence
Fear is a Man's Best Friend

There was one other that has long since been lost in the mists of time. Can't remember the title, but I remember it being incredibly good. I heard it in its entirety on that DJ's friday night show, but was never able to find it.

For the uninitiated, I recommend getting "Vintage Violence" or the best of compilation coming out soon.

Here's The Gun, a song covered by Siouxsie and the Banshees on their CD o'CoverSongs Through the Looking Glass:

Me and my partner we work on the run
The quick try to get quicker
And the creepers get hung
Now it's you that got wasted tonight on the job
One lost his liquor
And the other lost his hand

Ten sticky thumb prints on the door and the sink
But nothin' saw nothin' - just smell the stink
Five hundred mugshots and a hundred to one
Four forgotten and the rest just won't come

When you've begun to think like a gun
The rest of the year has already gone
When you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone.

Well, blood on the windows and blood on the walls
Blood on the ceiling and down in the halls
And the papers keep pounding on everything I burned
And the people getting restless but they'll never learn

I picked up a doctor - he's good with a knife
Says anaesthetic's a waste of his time
Works in a hurry but always worthwhile
Knows they won't be back for a long long time

Top of the staircase was ready to fall
We were still waiting downstairs in the hall
Watch out for big mama, she'll set you on fire
Or go for your neck with the chicken wire

When you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone
Once you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have already gone

Mother of plenty, mother of none
You've got me cornered and still on the run
I don't care nothing about you anyway
Stuck in this hole I'm on my way

Yeah when you've begun to live like a gun
The days of the year have already gone
When you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone
