Hi. I checked the FAQ and tried the search feature and couldn't find the info I was looking for. I am getting DSS installed. The retailer told me I could purchase an upgraded receiver for 30.00 that had a optical digital output.
My question's are: Is this true 5.1 digital sound? Are there any channels that broadcast it?
Any info about this would help.
Thanks

According to my copy of Satellite Direct there are a number of movies on HBO and Starz that are broadcast in DD 5.1.
There are 44 different films shown in March.

Thanks. So, I guess it's just mainly movie channel's and pay per view. Do any channel's broadcast letterboxed or widescreen movies?

HBO, Starz and PPV occasionally broacast in 5.1. Frequently the sound will drop out during an HBO 5.1 presentation. Maybe that's just my equipment? PPV are the only channels I've seen that ocassionally present movies in letterbox format.

we just covered this in Sony support training
Yes some things are in 5.1, mainly pay per view
you also have to have one of the higher end receivers, that supports dolby digital, not all receivers do that
they don't always braodcast the 5.1 signal from the ground stations to the satellites

yes HBO and Starz does broadcast SOME of their movies in DD5.1 and quiet frequently. I use Tivo to record most of these cause I think only like first time showings of movies are in 5.1 and the rest are in 2.0. I would not upgrade for 5.1 capability. If anything upgrade and get a reciever w/ Tivo. I have a Philips DSR6000 and its got 2 tuners, DD 5.1 output and Tivo!
