View Full Version : Best Film of 1991 (ongoing survey)

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1991 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1991 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

I've always found this year to be a yawner. There are plenty of films I enjoyed, but nothing that really stands out to me as great. (I still have yet to see The Rapture despite NUMEROUS attempts. All the local video stores claim to have it, but it's been "stolen" and they refuse to replace it. It's a conspiracy.)

Consequently, I waste my vote on ... Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (*ducks*)

I'm gonna take some heat for this one:
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
No, this is not a joke. I actually enjoyed this movie more than any other that year and I don't care that Kevin Costner's accent disappeared through half the film.

You know it!
Actually if you check my webpage, you can find my top 20 lists from 1960-2000, So yeah, I come prepared :)

Keep them coming Jon. Good job.

And contrary to popular belief (so far) I think '91 was a really good year (perhaps not as much for mainstream films)
1990 on the other hand... (to be continued)

Silence of the Lambs, the perfect genre film.

JFK is overbaked pretentious crap IMHO.

If JFK were released as the directors cut in 1991 I would vote for JFK. But it was the 3 hour theatrical cut, which I've never seen. So I have to vote for Silence of the Lambs

Man, I love JFK and Silence... But, I'm going to go WAY against the grain here and cast the first vote for...

Beauty & The Beast

Hmm... interesting point. I haven't seen the theatrical cut either, but I still consider it the best of '91. You could argue the same about Leon (The Professional) from '95. But I say that even though it is modified, it's still JFK.

 I fully admit this is a throwaway vote. Nothing stands out from that year as anything special (like I said, lots of really good, nothing great), so I'd just be randomly picking a really good film that I enjoyed. Might as well pick a personal favorite. :)

Just saw Grand Canyon tonight for the first time... based on checking the imdb afterwards, it looks like a lot of people are split on this one, but I loved it. Putting it at the #2 place in my list. Check it out if you haven't.

Sorry - I've been lazy not opening the next one - good to see there's still a "demand" though ;)

Well, blah - I though JFK would be an easy winner here. Looks like Silence of the Lambs is pulling it out, for now.

1) Silence of the Lambs - 8.2 votes
2) JFK - 5.2
3) Barton Fink - 4.2

Beauty and the Beast and Double Life of Veronique also got 2 votes, but it's pretty clear what the 3 faves are here... we'll leave this one open for a while though unless Silence begins to run away with it...

On to 1990 (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=182060)

This is one of the toughest years for me because so many of my very favorite films came out this year.

1. My Own Private Idaho
2. JFK
3. The Doors
4. Barton Fink

And I piss in the direction of the over-hyped chase film known as "Silence of the Lambs." IMO, it's just a bunch of overwrought BS.

Hmmm.. Silence of the Lambs for me I guess. I've never seen JFK though.

Yup - definitely time to do this... as soon as I can get ahold of a mod to do so, this one's closed:

1) Silence of the Lambs (19.7)
2) JFK (7.2)
3) Barton Fink (5.2)
