Review Wanted: Melies the Magician

How is the quality on this disc? Not worried about the actual films' plots, etc. I have seen them. What kind of shape are they in though? How does the quality compare to that of the Landmarks of Early Film Series? That is to say, which is a better purchase?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

i have the Landmarks of Early Films discs so am curious about this too.
I like the Landmarks discs, so this disc would have to be something quite special for me to upgrade, but I am still very curious.................

...here's what I wrote on January 2, 2002:

...this one, although a French release, is not only All Region, but NTSC-encoded as well...

http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=4297

...includes a very good two-hour documentary on the life and times of Georges Méliès and a 55-minute compilation of 15 of his movies, including Voyage dans la lune, both with optional English soundtracks...

...the disc really ought to be in every film-lover's collection!...

NOTE: The French disc is released on the arte video label - the cover also bears the Columbia/Tristar logo (CTV distribute the disc in France ... I think...)

...and, oh, YES! the disc is very good!

. . . . . .

To complicate matters futher, Kino on Video is releasing their 5-Volume video set The Movies Begin on DVD in mid-February.

This set is supposed to include all of the material from the VHS set, plus additional films. If that's the case, it should include the entire content of the Melies "Landmarks of Early Film" DVD in the set... and who knows if the picture quality will be improved or not. (when compared to either the original "Landmarks" DVD or this new Melies DVD).

Thanks,

Dan
