View Full Version : Best Film of 1992 (ongoing survey)

I know we've got polls like this all the time around here, but I figure this one will be a little more comprehensive and perhaps even informative.

This thread will be for your pick for best film released during 1992 (think Oscar considerations for what's eligible). I'm not making it a poll because whether you like it or not, that would influence some people's choice.

Results will be posted in this thread, and all subsequent threads for each year, and they will be ongoing... so you can still vote here even weeks after other year's polls have begun.

Please start your post with your #1 film from 1992 (try to limit it to one - after all, that's the point - two at the most (I'll split the vote)), and yes, discussions are more than welcome!

1) The Crying Game

And for your consideration, here's the rest of my best of '92 (though note that there are plenty of acclaimed films and whatnot from the year that I haven't yet seen):

2) The Player
3) Reservoir Dogs
4) Scent of a Woman
5) Wayne's World
6) Unforgiven
7) Romper Stomper

I don't see a clear cut winner here, but I'd predict my #3 (though I'd expect it to be The Crying Game if I thought near as many people have seen it... we'll see).

A tie for me -
Unforgiven
Singles

About as different as two movies can get, but I can't really choose between the two ("Unforgiven" probably technically is the better film and IMHO the best Western that I've ever seen, but "Singles" for me is a more personal movie and totally sums up 1992 drunken college escapades listening to Screaming Trees and Alice in Chains and the whole era. Besides it's got one of my favorite performances from Campbell Scott in it: "Work. Work is the key here.")

'92 wasn't such a great year for me movie-wise. I guess I'd
have to say: Unforgiven.

I can just about say the same thing (which is why I'm debating how far to actually go with them), but I figure for now, if there's a movie I actually love (even though I know it might not be what I consider the best if I'd seen about 100 from the year like I have in recent years), then I'll go with that as my pick - and I'd hope you'd do the same. 'Course nobody's got a gun to your head, so whatever spins your disc will do just fine.

Outstanding quote...if someone hasn't seen the film they'll probably be looking for a killer waterfowl...

Ooopps! Days of Being Wild is '91. I forgot!

Raise the Red Lantern is Zhang Yimou's best work. Don't miss it!

Not a very good year for movies, I would say Alladin.

Just keep going! These polls are cool. I'm very interested to see people's opinions year by year. I'm very interested to see some of the responses for the 80's and the 70's. Also, there is a lot of good stuff I may have missed and I'm getting that from people's lists...

I think this movie just about said it all to close the book on Westerns.

Agreed that this was a pretty bad year for movies. My favorite was Reservoir Dogs.

Reservoir Dogs
Aladdin
My Cousin Vinny

A surprise to me (I figured Reservoir Dogs would probably take this), Unforgiven has clearly come out on top of the poll with 8.5 votes (if more than 4 choices are given equal weight, I'm not gonna count any... but even if you can't narrow it down, please do post as it spurs discussion, recommendations, and all that good stuff...).

Here's the rundown:
1) Unforgiven (8.5)
2) A Few Good Men (4)
3) Reservoir Dogs (3.5)

The 1991 Thread is now open here. (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179517)
