until I saw the packaging and releases they have available on region 4! no snappers, can you believe it? no snappers! plus they have DVDs that I've been waiting for ages to be released on region 1! Guess I can't brag to my south pacific friends now.

R4 used to have DVDs in snappers but Warner has since converted those titles into keepcases. They even offered the slicks so that you wouldn't have to buy the title again, only an empty keepcase. As for great DVDs not released in R1, check out cynthia's great resource sticky thread in the International forum.
Dude, region 4 sucks a$$.
I live in Australia so I know what I'm talking about.
Putting snapper cases aside, there are a tonne of R1 titles that aren't available here, or are just plain inferior.
Bad things about R4:
Shrek only comes on one DVD (not even a double sided one).
Fight Club and Se7en don't have the special packaging.
Akira SE 2 disc isn't available here.
I've never seen a criterion title for sale here.
Big Trouble in Little China SE? What's that?
Goonies SE? Never heard of it.
Blair Witch Project? Recieved the R1 in the mail a month before the theatrical release here.
Bad things about R1:
Terminator SE was released later than R4, but has more extras (I think).
Snapper cases, but I can live with them.
There's probably a whole list of other things, but on the whole I see R1 as being better. Plus R1 has WAY more available titles than R4.

some regions have better versions of certain DVDs, but IMO, R1 has the best overall.

some movies are only available in R1, some others in R2, R3, etc.
defining what is the best region overall only depends in the type of movies your into (this is strickly imho)

fmian, Fight Club did have special packaging when it was first released, Big Trouble in Little China SE has been released, the Beastie Boys:CC is widely available and a few titles have Criterion extras on them and sell for heavily reduced prices (eg Armageddon - which gains 16x9 enhancement - and Walkabout) and Goonies SE is out, albeit with NTSC formatting (Gee, thanks Warner).
Anyway, R4 is a damn good region to be in, if they've got the title you want. It's considerably cheaper than R1, lacks snappers and has PAL. The two problems are range and extras. There are a few R4s with more stuff than in R1, but it's usually the other way around (www.michaeldvd.com.au usually provides the definitive answers).
