"Bully," being a rent or a buy, totally depends on your perspective on the director, Larry Clark.
When I saw "Kids," I thought all the controversy was due to its depiction of promiscuity and the film certainly did not pull any punches in showing it...to a point of being exploitative.
I personally think "Bully" is a much better film than "Kids." The movie really hits you with a sledgehammer in its topic of kids with neither future nor aspirations and proceed with the planning of taking one's life with a whim. The consequences are shown to be so realistic that it makes you think it's some type of documentary.
But Larry Clark still can't keep his voyeur (or call it "pedophiliac") characteristic by sometimes focusing on crotch shots which I feel is totally unnecessary.

Larry Clark's fly on the wall voyeuristic style scares Amerika. Many reviewers including reel.com rated this film as a 1 star pornographic pig stye. As in KIDS, Larry Clark's camera is one of the characters and impassively watches everything. Showing the audience what every other film maker in Hollywood cannot which includes scenes of sexual activity that are as docile and comfortable as saturday morning cartoons . Bully rides the borders of voyeurism nearly to excess, but I think it serves the film and the empty natures of the characters. There are a few scenes where the camera wanders a bit too much, but I felt it was like seeing the action from the eyes of a teen. It felt a little long at 115 minutes but over all the editing was fairly crisp. Based on a true story set in the heat of Florida, these completely damaged and aimless children are as lost as any teens ever portrayed in film. I liked its honesty and stlye, but the voyeur/camera was a challenge to stay with.
