This game seems to be getting rare, and I've wanted it for some time. The cheapest I've seen it going for on ebay is around $25 plus shipping. Most idiots on Half.com are listing them for $40-$60, unless you want one without a case or instruction manual, in which case you'll pay the rock bottom price of about $20.

Anyway, I found one today in pristine condition for $15...well that was after trading in a few DVDs that I didn't want anymore. Even though the DVDs cost mew about $12 total, I still feel like I came out ahead since I had no interest in them anymore.

I haven't even put the game in my system yet. Any advice for a Soul Calibur newbie (actually a fighter newbie at that)?

i think i paid $29 for this at CC...sounds like you got a decent deal.

i've bought so many DC and N64 games lately that i've barely scratched the surface on SC, but i can say that it's as solid a fighting game as i've seen. whether you're a "technician" or a "button masher" (i'm more the latter), it can be as deep as you choose to make it.

so far powerstone and powerstone 2 have gotten a little more of my attention. very different, and ABSURDLY fun...not you're typical fighting game at all...more of a fighting platform game.

anyway, check em out if you can find em. the first powerstone is just as much fun as the second and a little easier to find.

I bought SC about a year ago for $10 when KBtoys was clearancing out their DC titles. I haven't played much of it because I'm not to fond of weapons fighter. My friends love it though. Try going to GameFaqs.com and checking out the moves lists they have.

if i recall correctly, the moves are pretty well covered in the game...in practice mode i think.

This is my all time favorite game. I love soul calibur. I remember when i got it. I was snowed in and work was close for 2 days all did was play. The game lasts for decent while specially trying to play thru all the missions and unlocking art work and what not.
my advice for a newbie is to stick to the easy characters. maxi, is a good example. his moves aren't too difficult too master and deals pretty good damage. when more comfortable switch to kilik(longest reach of them all) or xiangchua(wicked combos and yes i probably misspelled that)

Soul Calibur, bar none, was the best fighting game on the DC. I loved to play that game so much - the next one i played after that was Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

Like sistasoulja said, start off with the easy characters such as Maxi and Mitsurugi - you should be able to dish out a lot of damage without trouble. The factor that sets Soul Calibur apart form other fighting games are the weapons and their different ranges, so make sure to take that into account when you play. Maxi has to get in pretty close, while Kilik can be used by a cheese player to thrash newbies from a distance.

When you get more comfortable with the controls, switch more advanced characters. They are harder to master, but when used by an expert they can cause unholy amounts of damage in a very short period of time. My favorites are Voldo and Ivy, precisely because they don't look very threatening or "cool" - usually you get some quip like "You sick bondage freak" :) But you'll be the one laughing when you're dishing out their most powerful combos that can take out 2/3 of an enemy's life in a matter of seconds. It's all about the skills. Sometimes I throw in Cervantes or Xianghua for variety.

I never liked 3D fighting games (being brought up on Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat), but I flat out loved Soul Caliber. It was/is a great game. It was really the only 3D fighting game I could handle.

good game . One of the first I picked up for the DC when the price slashed to $100.

Easy to learn, hard to master, sweet graphics and lots of playability. I really like the magical type effects and sparks in it. Its pretty amazing and even more considering it is better than the arcade version, they added face expressions and loads of other features for the DC version. Also if you have a VMU check out the VMU screen while your fighting you won't believe your eyes!

Bah, skip the easy charactors. Ivy is a little bit difficult to master but she is the most versitlile. Her throws have wicked reach. Its much more satifying when you get all her moves down than playing with a cheeser like Cervantes or Kilik.

BTW, am I the only one who got this on 9/9/99? Zero? Anyone?

I bought it one 9/9/99 along with my DC...

Then I sold them about a year ago.

Then I bought them again on eBay a few months ago.

Good times.

Ask Jack he will tell you how he always mops the floor with me at Calibur, but there have been days he felt the wrath of Kilik.:D I got this game the summer of 2000. It was one of the first titles I bought alongside Crazy Taxi. Seeing as how I don't want to hijack this thread, or turn it into the worlds biggest "I can beat anyone, anytime" thread. I want to ask you...whats the highest win record on your DC? I personally I am sad there was never a national Soul Calibur tournament. This game is (in my opnion) one of the best games ever made, and rivals Tekken in skill, and technique. Just a thought...now I'm gonna go play:D

Ask Zero How many days I stood there on the side lines of the arcade when some "modern arcade" finally got soul calibur in. I let everyone play and I just watched waiting for my main man, my character, Siegfried to be unlocked. then the day came. he was finally unlocked and Man did I clean the house with him. :D

I would suggest getting the feel of everyone. Learn your 8 way run. that thing will help you out dodge a lot of moves. see which characters moves you enjoy. you get all the moves in the practice list, and learn how to perry the attacks by learning the timeing of each attack.

I want to ask you...whats the highest win record on your DC?

Well it wasn't my DC, but my personal highest win record was just a bit over 110. :D they just came back for more. ;)

Man its been ages since I played soul calibur.

SC was what made me buy a Dreamcast - the "must-have" game that brought me back to Sega (after Golden Ax on the Genesis). A few moments come to mind: having the computer opponent sidestep a vertical swipe and tag me, then my doing it back a few moments later. Executing counters by design rather than luck. But the best was seeing Ivy's Dominance flip (opponent on all fours, Ivy in back with the sword whip around her victim's throat) that just screamed "Say my name, b*tch!". I still laugh about that one.

Enjoy the best fighter ever :)

Once I got really good at the game I only played with Maxi, Astaroth & Taki. There's a whole lot more to Maxi once you focus on him. Astaroth is pure fun...ring out anyone :) Taki is just one mean b ! tch if used correctly.
