Stores that stock P&S over WS

This thread follows on heels of rumors that Blockbuster is finally listening to consumer demand for widescreen. Though this is still unconfirmed, I am optimistic that we may have talked some sense into Blockbuster.

Unfortunately, Blockbuster is just one of many stores that stock only Pan and Scan versions when possible. Here is a list of other stores I have noticed who do the same:

- Hollywood Video
- Hastings
- Sam's Club
- Costco

These are just my untrained observations. Hollywood and Hastings are confirmed, but maybe Sam's and Costco were just out of WS copies.

Perhaps a list of such stores already exists. If so, I would appreciate if someone could direct me to the appropriate thread. If not, this thread may allow us to take action with these other stores as we did with Blockbuster.

Please add other stores that you have found to stock only P&S versions of DVD, and contact information if possible.

The Hollywood Video I work at *definitely* isn't P&S only.

I think Mummy Returns may be the only title in which our rentals and sellthrough copies were all P&S. We got the fullscreen Cats&Dogs for rent ('cause of the release delay, I believe), but our sale copies are all WS. JP3, we got a ton of P&S, and 5-10 WS copies for rent (I about fell over with happiness when someone came in to exchange their P&S rental for a WS one), plus all our sellthrough was WS. Princess Diaries was, unfortunately, P&S only for rent, but we got mixed for sale. Grinch was 100% WS, sale and rental. I'm not sure about our rental copies, but I know our sale copies of AP2 are all WS (R-rated, which is sort of annoying, but still WS).

HV seems to be playing around with different formats for releases, but I've always been fairly pleased with their sell-through habits. I'm hoping they settle on a JP3-style rental release, but upping the percentage of WS titles. (Yes, I pay /way/ too much attention to which releases of which titles we get. I'm weird.)

Hollywood most definitely does not follow this policy. I have emailed them to thank them on this policy and they responded that it is in fact an issue of contention among customers, but they will continue trying to please all customers.

I suggest that everybody thank Hollywood for this policy, if you care about OAR.

Please visit the links in my signature and do what you can to show your support for widescreen OAR!

I work at a Blockbuster Video, and know we will continue stocking P&S as long as the #1 question from customers is, "How do you get rid of those black bars?"

I hate P&S movies, but understand why they do it. People just need to be educated about the benefits of widescreen.
