For you collectors - Japanese Special Edition Xbox

Limited Edition Xbox for Japanese Launch

These are supposed to be similar, but definitely different to the Xbox team console in my other thread.

Official Press release

Special Edition Consoles

Microsoft announced that 50,000 Xbox Special Edition consoles will be available to commemorate the launch in Japan. The special console will be greenish-black with a translucent textured casing. The jewel portion of the box will have a silver logo with black lettering. In addition to the standard AV adapter and the HDTV- and Dolby Digital 5.1-compatible expansion AV pack, a silver-plated key chain will be included in the package. The key chain will feature an engraved serial number and signature from Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates. The Xbox Special Edition will be available for an estimated retail price of 39,800 yen.

Article here

JAPAN'S LIMITED-EDITION CONSOLE

Ohura said Microsoft considers Japan a key market and to boost the presence of Xbox, the company will offer special Xbox units with a translucent case, a silver-colored logo, high-definition TV and Dolby stereo expansion packs, and an engraved keychain with serial number.

Microsoft will sell 50,000 special Xboxes at a price of 39,800 yen each.

Japanese customers will be able to order an Xbox from February 2 online and through retailers.

Looks pretty cool. Looks like a translucient smoke color instead of the greenish black the article says... but it is probably just the lighting

Other than the seemingly odd location of those two buttons(select and start?) to the left of the left analog stick, I think that controller looks much more comfortable to me than the US one. I wonder if that'll make it's way as an available accesory in the US.

Yes it will...MS has already said that. Don't know when though.

Seems like a good choice by MS. I don't own an Xbox but I've played it at a friend's and in the store. My complaints about the controller were 1)weird size and shape(and I have fairly big hands) 2)small buttons too close together 3) poor D-pad. It seems like MS has remedied 2 of my 3 complaints(or possibly all 3 I couldn't get a good look at the D-pad). Good call on their part.

Looks like the controller is different, the button layout has been rearranged.

I wouldn't mind trying one of those controllers out!! That's still my weakness, those B&W buttons.

Button layout and size of the controller is different for the Japanese controller.

That controller will also be released in the US, no ETA yet, but I would expect shortly after Japanese launch.

I'd like to try the new controller. I figure if I pick up a third controller, it'll probably be the import, but the layout just looks like my right thumb'd be knocking the black/white buttons while I'm reaching for the other buttons. Gotta test it first though.

We've got a whole batch of the Japanese controllers at the office, and other than the fact that I think they are too small, the button layout is great. The moved black and white buttons don't get in the way at all for me.

Like I've said in other threads, it's a great controller, it's just to small for my big hands.

I don't find it much larger than the PS/PS2 controllers.

I work for an Xbox developer, just not allowed to say which or I have to start putting legal disclamers on my posts.

I don't want to write them, and you guys don't want to read them, so for now I won't be saying.

Possible order point.

Quantities will be limited I'm sure.

NCSX.net

Never dealt with them before. Order at your own risk.

I don't have a problem with the size, just the location of the B&W buttons. They are akward to reach for me. If they were in the same spot as the US controller, it would be near perfect. That's my only problem with it. I played Halo and Nascar Thunder with it for a while and the controller feels good, except for those two buttons.

To answer Gallant Pig, the controller is in the size range of the PS2 and Gamecube controller. Maybe slightly bigger.

Thanks! ~$450 sounds high though, considering 40,000 yen is currently $303. Even with insured shipping from Japan it shouldn't be that much. Then again, it is a limited edition box. We'll see where they price it once they're available.

I've ordered from NCSX before, they're ok. NCSX has been around for a long time.

Wow, that looks really cool, I wonder if they would release them in the US anytime soon? The Japenesse launch seems really strong, they have a ton of good titles!
