N64 "must buys"

picked up a used N64 from another DVDtalker along with 7 good games: Mario 64, Goldeneye, Turok & 2, Zelda: OT, Banjo K, and 1080...also picked up conker's BFD and Dr. Mario...

picked up the system because i missed out on it entirely and i'm rediscovering my love for platformers...it seems like nobody does them better than nintedo/rare.

anyway, i'm looking to catch up on some of the other "must buys" for this system, and i figured "who better to ask".

i was also hoping somebody would list the "25 best of" list from www.ign.com as it's blocked by my work server...bastards.

right now, i'm pretty sure i want:
Donkey Kong 64
Rogue Squadron
Banjo Tooi
Zelda: MM
Jet Force Gemini

any other must haves...especially platformers? note: i already have gex 2 + 3 for PS1, rayman 2 for DC, and soul reaver 2 for DC

I've had an N64 since it came out and I know all the good stuff.
If you like platformers, you definitely don't want to miss Rocket: Robot on Wheels. It's one of the best. If you like action/puzzle games, you won't want to miss Blast Corps. or Space Station Silicon Valley. Both are very cool.

Besides the stuff you mentioned here's some stuff you really should not miss:

Platformers:
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Mischief Makers (2D Platform)
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Yoshi's Story (2D Platform)

Action/Puzzle:
Blast Corps.
Space Station Silicon Valley
Tetrisphere

Shooters:
Star Fox 64
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
WinBack: Covert Ops

Adventure:
Paper Mario
Body Harvest
Hybrid Heaven
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine

Racing:
Excitebike 64
Mario Kart 64
Wave Race 64
Beetle Adventure Racing
Diddy Kong Racing
F-Zero X
Iggy's Reckin' Balls

Sports:
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis

Party:
Mario Party
Mario Party 2
Mario Party 3
Super Smash Bros.

First Person Shooters:
Perfect Dark

Decent, but not MUST HAVES:
Castlevania
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Earthworm Jim 3D
Duke Nukem: Zero Hour
Quake
Quake II
Turok
Turok 2
Turok 3

You might want to skip DK64. It did give me 30 enjoyable hours, but then I got sick it and never beat the 2nd half. Good call on JFG though. That's one of my favorite games.

You got 30 enjoyable hours out of it and you suggest that he skips it? Personally, I love DK64 and I've played through it three times. Another game I recommend is Harvest Moon 64. It may not be for everyone though... It's a farming simulation with some role-playing also (but no battles). It's surprisingly fun and addictive. If you like sports games, I'd also recommend Madden 2001 and International Superstar Soccer.

There are obvious ones like Zelda and such, but I'll second the nominations for two of the underrated games mentioned above.

Harvest Moon is very addictive. Sounds dumb and simple (and, well.... it is I guess) but it's quite fun. Getting girls to like you is the best challenge.

Jet Force Gemini, IMO, is what Mega Man Legends should have been. It's third-person shooting done right. JFG's action-packed and super fun.

yep...YGM...can't wait to get it!

for the peanut gallery?

anybody recommend Tonic Trouble or Glover?

can super smash bros possibly be more fun than powerstone 2?

i think the only 2 games left that i REALLY REALLY want are rogue squadron, JFG, DK64, and zelda:MM. but i can wait till i find em cheap...and i'm sure i'll stumble across some other stuff.

You really can't go wrong with Mario Kart 64! The SNES one was awesome but this one is even better.

I also recommend Shadows of the Empire, it is and old game but I really liked it.

wasn't the best part of "shadows" covered a little better in rogue squadron?

i was hoping to get some mario kart time in, but i made the mistake of checking zelda out and i am completely sucked in.

i see some late nights in my near future.

Yes, piloting ships are probably the best levels of SOTE (and the mission are more complex in Rogue with many objectives) BUT I still liked the "3D platform" levels.

ordered rogue squadron yesterday for $12 shipped along with Jet Force Gemini for $8 shipped. I might pick up shadows at some point if i find it really cheap, but i suspect rogue will keep me pretty content.

now my wish list is down to Donkey Kong 64 and Zelda: Majora's Mask...with a few titles on the margins if i find them cheap.

Right now I'm alternating between playing Mario 64 and Zelda: OOT and I'm loving both...plus i have all this other great stuff to look forward to.

As a sidenote, I'm really surprised at how much the N64 controller has grown on me. Always seemed a little awkward and gimmicky before, but it's really a great design.

I'd have to add Mission: Impossible to that list. It's not the Bond multiplayer extraveganza everyone hoped for when it came out, but it's still a great adventure game.

always seemed sort of odd to me...reminds me of columns for some reason and i didn't really like that. I still think Dr. Mario is the single most addictive puzzle game ever.

i remember playing it in college. 15 or so guys stuffed in a dorm room for days playing Dr. Mario on the NES. one-on-one...winner stays...loser gets back in line.

beer and pizza would come occassionally, people would come and go as classes and nookie dictated, but that game must have run virtually nonstop for a month. every time somebody set up a big drop on the other player, everybody in the room would yell "SCHWING!" (was in the days of Wayne's World)

and the poor schmuck whos room was taken over made the BEST salsa...with fresh cilantro...

we had a similar game of 15 man cutthroat going on the dorm pool table...you'd just give your ball to somebody when you had to leave and pick one up when you felt like coming back. a typical game would last a week...but i digress.

suffice it to say that i already picked up Dr. Mario.
