HK vcd...?

I recently aquired a VCD from Singapore...title, "Deep Purple, in concert with The London Symphony Orchestra".

I have a Sanyo dvd/vcd/mp3/cd...player(new).....

I can view dvd's with no problem...other than the reception could be better.

My vcd from hk plays the music really well however my problem is the video comes through like tring to watch hbo on cable with the scrambled mess...

I heard that there may be a code to activate or am I just sol...any suggestion would be appreciated...thanks in advance

...did you get the VCD (shame on you!) from Singapore (which, IIRC, is a PAL country) or from Hong Kong (which, I'm pretty sure, is an NTSC country)...?...

...if from Singapore, that might explain why you can listen to the disc but not watch it, since you say you only see a scrambled image...

(thinks: ...there he goes again, talking through his hat...)

If your DVD player can play any VCD's, then it won't matter if ther are PAL or NTSC - both will play. If you have an NTSC TV and are playing a "PAL" VCD, the picture may appear slightly compressed, but that's all.

yeah, like the others said, the vcd is in pal. some dvd players can convert pal to ntsc well but some just don't bother converting it at all, which seems to be the case with your dvd player. it's outputting the picture in Pal format which gives you the rolling picture.

I think HK is a PAL country/city. Just that NTSC is a more popular format for video. Or somethink like that.

...well... it turns out I was right in thinking that Singapore is a PAL country - but dead wrong about Hong Kong being an NTSC country... apparently - and much to my surprise! - the video broadcast standard in HK is indeed PAL... very strange, since I own a lot of HK DVDs, every one of which is NTSC...

...just goes to show: one learns something every day...

Suggestion

Have you tried playing it on another DVD player? I thought that PAL/NTSC was
a non-issue with vcds. If your player can play a vcd then it's essentially transparent.
This came up a few months ago here.
Have you played any HK vcds before and what's the picture like with those?

First off, thanks to all the replies from everyone...

I have not tried to play the vcd in a different unit yet...

This is the only VCD that I have and the reason I supposedly purchased a unit that would play dvd's and vcd's...ect...

Player1327, has the rolling picture format correct with the sound in good format...

This brings me to my next questions:

1) The unit I have claims to play VCD's both on the box and on the front of the unit it claims to play vcd's with the following @video cd insignia...Both the products have the insignia the same however the rolling picture still exists...Would it be best to return the unit and purchase another capable of playing vcd's are all units basicly the same...like return the sanyo and get a sony?

This is wierd that I'd be buying a unit to play and vcd verses buying vcd's to play in the unit...hehe

"...I thought that PAL/NTSC was
a non-issue with vcds...

...to explain: the first (expensive!) DVD player I bought is a 'chipped' DENON DVD-2000... whenever I put in a R1/NTSC (say, Toy Story), or R0/NTSC (say, the Criterion The Element Of Crime) DVD, I have to go into the SETUP menu of the PLAYER and change the on-screen menu language from ENGLISH to GERMAN... if I don't, sound and picture are ok, except the latter is black-and-white only...

(my LD player automatically switches from PAL to NTSC, depending on whether I play a UK disc or a US one - but, of course, that was before Region coding became an issue)

...I have to do the same when I play one or the other of my (very limited ) selection of 'adult' VCDs (which all come from the USA and are therefore, presumably, NTSC) - again, if I didn't change the the player's SETUP beforehand I would get to see b/w porn - and that ain't no fun!...

...the point of which is that, yes, if you watch VCDs or Region 0 DVDs on a TV, it does matter that they are NTSC- or PAL-encoded...

This was the old thread I was referring to:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hlight=vcd+pal

Disc1 doesn't mention where he is located, so that might be relevant? Since he
didn't specify, I assumed he was in the US and has a NTSC TV and player.

As to LDs, I have no PAL discs and don't know whether either of my players
auto convert or not. Or maybe they all do?
On my R2 PAL DVD of Mylene Farmer videos, I have to go to Setup and set it to PAL before it
will load, then switch back to NTSC to properly view it.

Still, with vcds, I have never experienced across this. And this is the first
time I've heard of it. It's very curious.

The only time I had a rolling picture on a VCD is when my DVD Player was setup as Progressive. I switched it back to Interlaced and it was fine.

...another thought just occurred to me: regardless of whether we take a VHS tape, an LD, a DVD, or a VCD - in PAL countries the telly shows 25fps, whereas in NTSC countries (North America, Japan) the telly shows 30fps... there's no way around that!...

...now - in (Western) Europe, which - with the exception of France - is a PAL region, most TVs made in the past c.10 years will handle NTSC input (more or less well, depending on make and model)... whereas in NTSC regions your average, standard TV will most definitely NOT handle PAL input...

...also, in Europe many if not most VCRs will output an NTSC signal (but you cannot RECORD NTSC input)... and many European DVD fans will have spent considerable money to have an 'all region' or 'code-free' DVD player... I know I did... and 'BD' (Before DVD) I spent a respectable sum for an LD player that could handle NTSC as well as PAL discs...

...so, yes, I do think PAL or NTSC would make a difference for VCDs as well... although... I have never actually seen a PAL VCD... don't know where you could find these, don't know if they even make them (NOTE: afaik VCD never caught on in Europe, it is very much a Far East thing)...

...sorry for rambling on like this...

for awhile i didn't even know vcds had a specific signal, whether it be NTSC or PAL. Then i always thought that all my vcds were in NTSC cause I never really had a problem playing them in my dvd player on my ntsc tv. But i soon found out the conversion from PAL to NTSC on my player was good so I never really noticed until i just took my vcds and play them on my computer. And a few of them were indeed in PAL. The only way i could tell was to look at the framerate (25fps for PAL, 29.97 for NTSC) and resolution (352x288 for PAL, 352x240 for NTSC).

All the VCRs with "NTSC playback" but no NTSC recording capability will not output NTSC ... they generate "PAL60" output instead. Simply said, the colour information of the signal is PAL style, but the rate is still at ~60 fields per second (NTSC-style). Most recent TVs will synchronize the image, some (mostly older) units will not - and then you get the "rolling image" problem.

"...Most recent TVs..."

...well, how recent is 'recent'?... the very non-descript, made-in-UK, 14-inch Sony (KV-M14D) TV in my bedroom is twelve years old now, and I've been watching (PAL and) NTSC laserdiscs on it since I bought the set, later joined by ordered-from-the-USA NTSC videos, and - since February 1997 - also (PAL and) NTSC DVDs --- with no problems (the LD player is connected - by SCART cable [all 21 pins wired] - to the VCR which in turn is connected - again by fully wired SCART cable - to the single SCART input on the back of the set; the DVD player is connected to the composite IN on the front of the TV - not ideal, I know, but hey! it's only my bedroom set and the picture from DVDs actually looks very good!)...
