looking for center channel

my friend is looking for a new center speaker. he's willing to pay up to $200. what do you all think would be the best one for this price? i'm open to all suggestions, so fire away. thanks in advance.

He needs to buy the center channel that matches his front speakers (brand/model) to get the "best", most even sound.

Since you didn't post what fronts he has, there's not much else we can do to advise him.

he has some really old technics for his fronts. should he get new fronts before the center?

That's a tough call. If they sound good and are pretty solid built and able to handle some intense 5.1 sounddtracks, then I'd say keep them and just buy a Technics center and enjoy his system.

If they are kinda crappy and don't look like they'll survive some heavy use, I'd think about finding some new fronts and center.

Your friend should check the cones - carefully - for rotting or peeling. Speakers won't last forever, and if the cones start tearing, he'll weld the coils and damage his receiver.

I recently sent a pair of 30 yr Advents and a pair of 15+ yr old Fishers to my speaker guy for possible repair. I thought they sounded alright - until my new replacements arrived.
