Help with hardware (Kenwood HT-504/VR-507)

I feel like an idiot asking such a retarded question as this, but I'm going to anyway, becuase I'm about to pull my hair out. I thought I knew at least a bit about electronics and HT setups from the plethora of reading I've done, but I guess not.

I just got the Kenwood HT-504 "Home Theater In A Box" set-up for Christmas and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to put it together.

I have the VR-507 receiver and a Panasonic RV-31UK DVD player, with the Kenwood speakers that come with the system. If possible, how in the world do I get DTS and Dolby Digtal out of this thing!?!?!?

I tried connecting a set of RCA plugs (the red, white, and yellow types) from the two audio outputs on the player to the 507's two "DVD" audio inputs. That didn't work. I got no sound. When I connected them to the 507's two "Video 2" audio inputs, I got sound in the front speakers, but no sound at all when I switched to DTS mode on the DVD (it was the Die Hard 5-Star Collection, incidentally). I also wondered for hours about why the 507 has video inputs, since it's a freakin' reciever, but that's probably irrelevant.

Then I decided somehow--partially from reading the manual and possibly misreading what it said--that the 507 does not have a built-in DD and/or DTS decoder ("To enjoy DTS Digital Surround playback, an external 5.1 channel DTS decoder system must be connected to the digital output of the CD, LD, and DVD player," it says). So I set out to buy a new DVD player with a built-in decoder only to find out that they are virtually non-existant. No store I've been to has one and most of the salespeople I talked to said they've never even HEARD of a player with a DTS decoder built-in. It seems as though almost every reciever has the built-in decoders and it seems very unlikely that the 507 is any different. Plus, I found several websites citing "Built-in DD and DTS decoding" as a feature of the 507. Of, course, this may simply be wrong or false advertising, but it's just confused me more.

Now, I think perhaps I needed a different kind of connection and that the RCA plugs were the wrong way to go about it. I've read so much garbage about digital cables and optical cables and coaxes and on and on and... man, my head hurts.

HELP! Please, somebody, tell me what I have to do to listen to Die Hard and Apocalypse Now in DTS and DD (respectively)!! I obviously have no idea what I'm doing and I need some real info. I would be forever in your debt! Thanks so much in advance.

So you have 2 receivers now...the one that comes with the HT-504 and your VR-507...correct?

Both of those receivers have built in DD5.1 and DTS decoding accordig to Kenwood's site.

You should be connecting your DVD player to either one of those receivers with your digital out. That may either be a optical or coaxial connection.

I think the VR-507 is the receiver that comes with the HT-504.

Hook either the optical or the digital output from the DVD player to the receiver. Change to the appropriate source by using the Input Selector dial. Also, press the Input Mode button on the receiver to select "D-Auto" or "D-Manual". You won't hear anything if it's set to "Analog".
