Target return policy. Bend over...

If you purchased presents at Target I hope the recipients like them and everything fits because...

"If you buy something at full price and try to return it after a sale, you'll be refunded only at the lower price -- even if you have a receipt proving you paid more. That's not all. This year the store implemented a 15 percent restock fee on electronics."

You can prove you paid more. You even have a receipt but you can only get the sale price refunded? In my opinion that is simply theft. I was just floored when I read this here: http://www.kctv.com/Global/story.asp...8&nav=1Puc6Dk6

What do you think of this?

Yeah, I tried to return something there that I wasn't pleased with, had the receipt and everything, but they wouldn't take it back, because it was in that plastic casing that you basically have to partially destroy to open the product. I basically told them where they could stick it. I am going to wait until I find the same item at a wal-mart, buy it there, then return that unopened one to target, and then try to take the opened one back to wal-mart, which they will probably take back.

Oh yeah, target gave me a business card with their "Guest Relations: Return and Exchange Dept" phone number and told me to try to resolve my problem with them.

Fvck Target.

I took back a dvd player that was never opened and they gave me a full refund.I mentioned to them that the exact same player was available at their online site for 20 dollars cheaper, plus free shipping. They said that they do not match the online price.

Yeah had similar issue with WalMart ... they won't price match their own website either, or even other WalMarts...

The policy refers to seasonal merchandise and I can see why they started it. I know people who have purchased things like Christmas lights at full price and then they buy them up on clearance and return them at the full price. Also, say you buy a patio set in July and it sits around your house till late September and you return it. Now the store has no place to put it and has to sell it at a deep clearance price to get rid of it. It might make you happy, but they lose a lot of money. For what it is worth, I returned some seasonal stuff that I picked up at 50% off and it was then 75% off, but they still gave me what I paid.

As for the restocking fee, you would not believe how many people buy DVD players, videocameras, etc and use them for whatever event and then take them back. Stores are usually forced to drop the price by at least 10% because the item is now open box. As dvd-4-life stated, they will usually waive it if the item is unopened.

The part of the new policy that disturbs me is what TheMadMonk mentioned about not taking a return because it was opened. I hate those plastic cases and sometimes you don't know if it is what you want until you get it opened.

I will be curious to see how all this gets handled after Christmas. The reality of it is that stores with lenient return policies tend to get reamed.

I returned a boombox to Target unopened and within a week of purchase, I got a full refund without hassle.

While I was waiting in line for the return, I read the new policy posted on the wall behind the customer service counter. From my understanding of it, the new return policy applies to seasonal merchandise when you return it after the season, and to (opened?) portable electronics with a 15% restocking fee.

Their return policy makes perfect sense to me.

I can understand the restriction on seasonal merchandise. As for the electronics, it sounds like they now have the same policy as Best Buy and Circuit City.

You can't blame a store for trying to protect itself from dishonest people.

I can't stand that plastic casing either. I purchased a Casio PDA at Target on Black Friday and noticed that the receipt stated that a 15% restock fee would apply to opened returned electronics. I had my doubts about this PDA but I wanted to try it. I surgically opened it with a hobby knife when I got home. The PDA stunk so bad that I slipped it back in and it and tried to return it and they took it back w/o question or penalty.

Doesn't the 15% restocking fee apply to opened portable electronics only? I didn't see Frys, Best Buy or Sears stating that they would charge a restocking fee for returning opened non-portable electronics like AV receiver or TV.

I bought a TV at Sears a year ago, it sucked really bad (distortion) and I returned it for a full refund.

I have never had a problem with returns to Target and usually that restock fee is not charged on defective items only didn't want it or wrong thing.

Anyone else notice they never seem to offer exchange just refund you. I always thought was wierd.

No problems with Target. Last time they double charged me (rang up the item twice). A few days later I went back, prepared to argue with them because they really had no reason to believe that I didn't purchase two of the same item. However, they credited my account for the dupe item (something like $10+).

I work in the electronics dept at Target....

15% restocking fee is on portable electronics, as mentioned earlier. Camcorders are the main concern here. If the seal is broken, you may be charged a restocking fee.

I don't think the return policy is that bad. If you are going to spend $300+ dollars on something, do a little research first and make sure it is what you want.

I think the restocking fee can apply to anything open. I have seen stores charge restocking fee's on computers, printers and vcr/dvd players.

I made the mistake of bending over and Target just shoved my dvd back up my @ss.

They aren't taking returns without receipt even if it is an unopened product...not even for store credit or exchange.

They just lost all my business.

Wal-Mart will give you cash with no receipt.

Target is just trying to protect themselves. And remember it is the CORPORATE office that sets these policies, not the lonely people who have to take the abuse from irrate and rude people who are denied their returns. (One man was ejected from our store yesterday after verbally threatening the store manager).

No stores in their right mind will give you cash for returns without receipt. The best they would do is to give a store credit or gift card

If it was gift, ask the person who gave it to you for the gift receipt. They have been giving out gift receipts for months with every purchase.

Having worked in retail in the past, I can see why they are doing this. There are a heck of a lot of scammers out there in the world. They are just trying to protect themselves.

Yeah, that'll show Target.

And Wal-Mart gets to bear the cost and will eventually have to implement the same policy.

I think this is BS. Sorry, but if they are getting back an UNOPENED DVD that they can obviously slap a sticker on and resell, what the hell is the big deal? It's a bunch of crap. I realize that they gave out gift receipts, but I got two DVD's for Xmas without the receipts that I already had. Took em back to BB without any trouble.

Sorry Target, but you lose my DVD business too.

the problem occurs when everyone returns 2 dvds to target. they will end up with a huge inventory! it costs them money to store the extra dvd's, or to have them shipped to other stores or somewhere else. or they end up taking a loss when they put a bunch of poor selling movies in the clearance bin. just because they gave you $19.99 back for returning Air America doesn't mean that someone else is going to actually pay that much for it.

Thanks, it is from a song by Andres Cabas, you can hear a minute or so of it here:

http://www.terra.com.co/proyectos/an...iscografia.htm

His CD has been recorded, but not yet released, and as far I can tell isn't available for pre-order yet.

As far as Target goes, I was just there, everything Christmas related is now 75% off.

It just makes sense that they don't want people to buy something before Christmas, then return it after Christmas for full credit, when Target has to sell it for 75% + off.

All Target is saying is that if you buy a seasonal item before whatever holiday, don't expect to get full credit for it after the holiday has passed, because they won't be able to resell it at full value.

Target has received alot of complaints on it's new return policy. Corporate office has sended down the following instructions...

If someone returns an item (say a DVD) with no receipt, they can pick out an item for equal or greater value (paying the difference) in the same dept (in this case, Music and Movies dept).

I saw alot of angry people. One guy almost nailed our store manager with an opened VHS tape beacuse we wouldn't take it back. He was promptly "escorted" out of the store

ABout returning movies you didn't buy there, think of it this way...

Say you aer returning Shrek on DVD ($19.99 value). Target gives you $19.99 back for it (Target at -$19.99). They then put it back on the shelf. Someone buys it for $19.99 (Target at $0). So in actuality, they ARE losing money, since no profit was made.

This is only correct if Target refunds the price of the DVD. If they are exchanging it, then they are giving away $20 worth of merchandise and receiving $20 worth of merchandise. Then the only difference in profit would be the original cost of the merchandise that was returned minus the original cost of the merchandise that was given out. An exchange policy like this shouldn't hurt the store.
