i just couldn't resist picking up a dreamcast sports bundle (NFL, NBA, and WSB2k1) for under $70 a few weeks ago...especially with so many good games for around $10.

since then i've picked up:

soul calibur $27
virtua tennis $10
test drive v-rally $10
jet grind radio $8
rayman 2 $14
smashpack $10
soul reaver $10
sonic adventure $10

sega controller $14 (those things are suck...my hand cramps just thinking about it)
interact dreampad w/ jumppack $20 (excellent feel and build)
another offbrand controller $9 (cheap build but still better than sega's)
2 VMUs $20

i also have been toying with some classic arcade emulations thanks to some forum help. very cool.

anyway, all that stuff should keep me busy for a long while. i love all of the games so far. i can barely recall why i didn't pick up a dreamcast in '99...

oh, wait...i remember now. sega has messed up every console since the genesis in one way or another and failed to follow through on them as well...remember sega CD? 32X? Saturn?

Sega just wasn't a good bet...especially with sony's masterful execution of the playstation. I have to admit to being sort of a "sony guy" these days. not a fanboy mind you, but it seems that all the games i really want to play are on PS2. still not gonna pay 300 bucks for it though, and the DC should hold me over quite well while i wait for that $200 price point.

now that i have the DC and a small collection of good games, it seems to me that from a hardware standpoint, sega FINALLY got it right this time. unfortunately, their reputation was just too tarnished and most people were content with their PS1s and N64s till the next wave of consoles showed up.

bottom line: as sad as i am for sega, i'm feeling pretty good about my new $50 console, and i'm looking forward to seeing sega do what they do best...compete with namco.

Congrats! I just bought my DC a few weeks ago. Glad I did, now that I hear they are becomiong extinct in the retail market. This is my first system since the original Nintendo days, and it's funny, but the controller feels fine to me, maybe just a bit small, but then I have big hands. Perhaps it's because I don't have anything to compare it to.

Anyway, of the games you list above, I have Rayman 2. It's a blast. One of those games that will suck you in and have your head swimming at four in the morning when your wife is yelling at you to turn the damn game off and come to bed already.

Have fun!

You deserve a good scolding! :p [Slaps chess on the wrist]

Death by hype and grudges. Rest in peace, Dreamcast. It was really amassing a great library, now we have NO online console options. I thought Unreal on SegaNet was one of the coolest things ever. Following that up with Alien Front and NBA2K2 and you got an insomniac gamers wet dream. A round the clock real opponent.

I have no regrets picking mine up on 9/9/99. Nothing but good times. I was sad to see it go, but what are you going to do.

You just HAVE to pick up Tony Hawk Pro Skater. The first one should be available for $9.99.

Yeah, Sega did a lot of things right with the Dreamcast. I still think the VMU is the coolest memory device ever released for a console.

Yep. NFK2K & 2K1 were great. I would call palys and the opp. would have no clue what to expect :D Hell even if you didn't have a VMU you could fake the play calling by selecting your play, then move to some BS play in the same formation or another different formation and let your opp think thats the play you're calling :) Best damn football games I've ever played!

With all this next gen hype, I've yet to see a game look or play as good as Soul Calibur.

I fully admitt I am a sega fanboy. They have messed up marketingwise soooooo many times but they are for the gamer, but the gamer. And if they ever re-enter the console wars years from now, I will be the first in line to buy the system.

mtucker:

i played the tony hawk demo, and it just didn't do it for me...but at 10 bucks, maybe i'll give it a chance.

boot:

it's something about the way the handles are too thin and how they sort of angle in...just kills my wrists. i also think the analog pad is too small to make accurate adjustments. but i love the dreampad. it's not quite as good as sony's controller though....sorry.

deadpool:

i'm mixed on the VMUs...seems gimmicky and hasn't proven even remotely useful to me yet...though it's worth owning a couple for NFL2K1 i guess.

played a little v-rally (solid game with suspect collision detection) and some jet grind radio (i have a hunch i'm gonna like this one a lot) last night. i haven't even had a chance to think about getting into the adventure games (rayman and legacy of kain).

i'm just stoked to have such a solid little system for peanuts. :) but i have to admit that if it were still 200 and the sony were 300 and i HAD to buy one or the other...

i'd have bought the PS2.

this system was never a good bet...but it's a hell of a bargain now.

Dreamcast is indeed a good console - good enough to give the PS2 a run for its money in terms of technology... Sega's image wasn't so much tarnished really - I mean they came out with the Genesis long before Nintendo came out with the Super Nintendo. Sega has been one or two steps ahead of everyone else for a long time. Remember the Sega Game Gear? maybe not, but everone's in a frenzy over GameBoy color and Advance. I think for the most part - Sega got everything they did almost right. Their consoles were all great and ahead of their time, but they didn't have the advertising budget of Sony or at the time Nintendo to compete in terms of sales. Some of their systems were lacking in the games department and were short-lived due to lack of developers. Developers don't want to make games for a console that nobody has purchased. So there were a few hiccups in Sega's console line, but I don't think they were really bad or poorly designed... I'm glad they are still around though to make great games. Their biggest fault is that they had a poor marketing department and a very small advertising budget. They blew their wad advertising the Dreamcast and if they hadn't nobody would've ever bought that either.

Since I've picked up my Dreamcast about 3 weeks ago I've managed to pick up the following all for under $10:

Virtua Tennis
Toy Commander
Sega GT
Metropolis Street Racer
Jet Grind Radio
Vanishing Point
Sega Smash Pack
Chu Chu Rocket
4 Wheel Thunder
Test Drive V-Rally
NFL2K

I ordered Unreal Tournament from Half.com (I couldn't find it at BB) and have been playing it like mad. This game rocks!

I also picked up another controller (Mad Catz) two rumble packs, and a memory card. I also have a dreamconnection so I can use my Playstation controllers and a PC keyboard.

This Console is pretty amazing.

I'm also having fun playing my old Nintendo games on it. Excite Bike, Super Dodge Ball, Metroid etc.....

Sure glad I picked this up.

Even though I have "graduated" onto a ps2, I'll still say that the dreamcast was one good console.

I still cant get over how much fun Power Stone is to play, sure it's not as deep as other fighters but the game play was addictive and fun to watch.

i just ordered powerstone 2, so hopefully you're right.

picked up since last post:

unreal tourney $10
sega GT $8
ecco the dolphin $12
air force delta $17
powerstone 2 $17

the only ones i've actually played are unreal, which i like (it has a more intuitive control scheme than most FPSs) and Sega GT which i liked a lot more 3 years ago when it was called Gran Turismo.

i've mostly been playing soul calibur (WOW!!!), virtua tennis (wicked addictive), and jet grind radio (stylish and just plain fun)...

oddly, the one that i've probably spent the most time on is a buggy emulation of Dr. Mario...memories of a college dorm room in the early 90s with a LOT of beer...
