A co-worker of mine is looking for a good deal on a 5 disk DVD player for his father. I saw a toshiba for $229 and a pioneer for $199.00 (after a 30 MIR) at 800.com. I believe there is a 20% passport discount at 800.com, correct?

Where can he go to register for a passport? I've had mine since it started, so i'm not sure how to get a new one.

I’m trying to decide on a DVD changer also. I’ve read that the Pioneer 503 (great price at 800.com BTW) has a little more trouble with layer changes than the similar Sony C600. I’m not a fan of Toshiba, so I haven’t looked into that player. Over all, the Pioneer is more highly rated on the review sites. Does anybody have experience with these machines than can give me their reaction?

Also, Is there any other player that I should be looking at, in the 5-disc changer category? I wanted to go with a mega changer, but none of the reviews I’ve read for any of the players, sound that good. The Sony machines are apparently really bad.

As for the passport info, I can’t help you there. I haven’t ever looked into that either.

Any other suggestions? My co-worker would really appreciate a lot of advice. This is a xmas present for his dad.

I have a Pioneer 503 and have had no problems in over a year. At least for me it has worked well. Love having the ability to put in five disks whether DVD or CD. Plays CDR with no problems too. I think the Sony had problems with CDRs, but I am not sure.

Bump since I'm also looking for a 5-Disc changer for my folks, but I also want to get one that handles CDs and CD-Rs as well. Cost is less of an issue; I'm chipping in with my 2 sisters.

Ease of use is important since I don't want my dad throwing the machine across the room or my mom breaking down in tears because it's too confusing. ;)

I'll check out that Pioneer 503, any more suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have a sony 5 disc, can't think of the model number...it works good. No zoom though, I kinda like the zoom feature. very simple though!

I also have a Pioneer 503 DVD player. I've had it for two years and am pleased with it's performance; there have been a few movies with a slight pause at the layer change, but nothing drastic. I've never had a problem with any DVD, CD or CD-R.

Although I have heard negative reports about early DVD 50's I believe the new ones with the newest firmware are worth the money. I have a DVD 5 and love mine. Although the DVD 5 doesn't support CDR but does support CDRW
