Anyone using the PS2 as their sole DVD player?

Well, I'll be getting a Playstation 2 sometime soon, and was wondering how it performs as a DVD player. I only have one component input into my TV which my current DVD player is using.

Is it easy to use as a DVD player? Does the little infra-red receiver thing take up a controller port the whole time? Is it easy enough that my wife could use it?

Any information would be great.

I have had to for the last month or so since my video cable went bad. I've been wanting to invest in a really good cable which would be likely to set me back at least 50 bucks.

I really, really hate trying to fast forward through DVDs with this thing. The fast-forward isn't even 2x speed I don't think. Whether you use a game controller or a remote, I think the controller is simpler than most standalone players and wouldn't be as intimidating to your wife or younger kids.

The PS2 might be a better player for the younger or non-techie crowd, but it might drive you nuts - especially the fast forward speed.

I used to use it as my DVD player. Though I also had a Toshiba SD1600... but the PS2 was in my room and the SD1600 was in the other room of my apartment... so... but now I'm living in the downstairs at my parents... so I have both in the room, and I use the Toshiba.

Yes the fast forward/rewind on the PS2 is horribly slow... the controls are also a bit akward, easy straight forward, but akward. My opinion is... if you get a PS2 get it to play games. If you get a DVD player, get it to watch DVDs. But that's just me.

if you are going to use it for a dvd player get a sony dvd remote since it installs a new version of the dvd player software onto a memory card and it improves performance.

I use it as my second player and it is a nice second player. If i did not have the money I would be ok with it as my sole dvd player.

The thing is, I'd love to be able to hook up my PS2 to the component inputs of my TV. However, currently my DVD player is connected to the component inputs, and I certainly can't give up the DVD quality. Looks like I'll probably just use the S-Video connections. I'm sure I wouldn't notice a difference anyway.

I used a PS2 as my main DVD player for about 6 months and it was OK. I finally got irritated that it wouldn't play certain movies and features, so I bought an actual DVD player.

Even after updating the drivers to the latest, it won't play alot of DVD titles. What I see happens often is the movie will freeze when it gets to the layer change. Maybe one day the drivers will be good enough to play everything, but regular dvd players are cheap anyway so I'll use them.

I agree with V-ism.

My friend has a PS2, and WAS using it as his sole DVD player. It sucked. I know for a fact that it couldn't handle Jurrassic Park (would lock up during the first Velociraptor scene), and would get jammed up half way through U571. I think when the bit rates get high, it runs out of RAM and stumbles.

Mike
